This panic buying is ridiculous, had to go to 6 diff shops just to get loo roll

Nr out of loo roll. Weekly shop today. Aldi, tesco asda x2 and sainsburys had none I mean not even the cheap stuff or fancy patternwd type ones.

Luckily wilko had some.

Couldn't even get pasta, prob have to just get in costco not to bulk panic buy but in hope they have some. I just don't get it there as storage here is crap.

Infant formula, ds can only tolerate one. I norm buy 4 at a time. Struggled to get that even

Now I knew about the handwash etc and always have that anyway.
Tesco cleaning aisle was also bare except the likes of oven cleaner, polish.. Everything antibac or likewise was gone!

I just want to shop normally.

When people are being told they might have to isolate themselves for 2+ weeks it's understandable they want to stock up on provisions. That's sensible buying, not panic buying. But when so many people do it at once, if course it impacts on stock flow.

This extract from a BBC article shows that people are actually being advised to stock up ...

Northernsoullover · 07/03/2020 07:23

@LangSpartacusCleg its in case you have to self isolate and can't buy any! I overbuy in general since we all got norovirus and I hadn't stocked up. You don't make that mistake twice Grin

Alfette · 07/03/2020 07:24

My local Sainbury's yesterday, in London. I hadn't even thought buying loo roll would be an issue (we were just down to our last roll at home)...nearby Waitrose had some though, only in a 9 pack which is a lot for us, so now we will have posh wiped arse for the next month or so. Smile

I also have some horrible 'craft/hand made/kids project' soap that is gathering dust somewhere. It's survived children parties, house moves, the bombsite that is my DC's bedroom...I bet the coronavirus would give it one look and eradicate itself.
Maybe I should sell it on ebay for a small fortune and relabel it 'artisan soap'?!

It’s beyond ridiculous tbh, we shop at Aldi every week, and always have a chat with the manager, he joked you haven’t come in for toilet rolls have you? We laughed, all the toilet rolls had old out yesterday apparently, we saw a lot of shoppers with trolleys full of toilet rolls, they had got some back in stock, uht milk etc. No hand sanitizer or pain killers, vitamins etc. We had a trolley full, but we do every week, we didn’t buy anything extra. It’s the panic buying that will cause the supply issues. People need to calm down and be sensible.

Sunshineandalltherainbows · 07/03/2020 07:25

It’s so annoying. I just got out of
Hospital and was told to initially take codeine which they provided but to then manage on paracetamol when pain is better. Husband went to get me paracetamol and it was sold out in 5 shops before he finally found some luckily we had a half a packet left in the house anyway. It’s so selfish of people to stockpile things when others might actually need it 😡

Scrumptiousbears · 07/03/2020 07:25

It annoys me so much that people like myself cannot buy certain products as standard because they are running out where others are stockpiling and sitting in it being unused. It's just selfishness. We've run out of Calpol. Cannot get it anywhere. If people just shopped normally we'd all have an opportunity to buy what we need.

TabbyMumz · 07/03/2020 07:29

Our Aldi was fine...lots of loo roll, lots of pasta, beans and anything else people have talked about on here. It's silly, there are less people with Corona virus than normally get the flu. Noone is panic buying by us.

ivykaty44 · 07/03/2020 07:31

I don’t work on a “Justin in time” or full on peepers system

I have a month to 6 weeks stock in my pantry and same with soap and loo roll

No worries here and no panic purchasing, just shopping as normal

Having some back up food staples is surely sensible and avoids all this panic or hunting for goods after the shelves are emptied

randomsabreuse · 07/03/2020 07:34

I bought my usual 12 rolls as put the last "spare" in position yesterday morning. Had to get 3 little packets as the bigger ones weren't there. Still cheaper than the fancy Argan Oil/Aloe Vera options.

Tried not to feel bad as I always buy a 9 or 12 pack which lasts 2-3 weeks - and definitely need spares in case a DC drops a roll somewhere stupid.

Also no vitamin C tablets in the shop!

GoodbyeRosie · 07/03/2020 07:37

My other half refuses to 'panic buy' , so when it's time for us to restock on loo roll, there won't be any. Same with pasta, we havd loads of it but I'm resigned to not having any for a while.

Kind of torn between being the sensible, bigger person and wanting stuff!

beethecrackon24995 · 07/03/2020 07:39

I don't get the loo roll mass buying. Why not just have a wash straight after Confused.

East London here. Waitrose loo roll and tissue isle completely empty. Never seen anything like it. The look on people's faces when they turned into the isle was classic. Good conversations and community spirit Smile

Aesopfable · 07/03/2020 07:42

I think it is unfair to blame panic buyers. For a start, if they really are panicking then I think they need sympathy and information. But in the course of a normal day supermarkets are constantly restocking their shelves - display space is too valuable to use it to store days worth of stock. As has already been pointed out, it take very little extra buying to clear shelves. If a just few extra % of shoppers pick up single paracetomol box (which you are not able to bulk buy anyway) then the shelves will be cleared.

randomsabreuse · 07/03/2020 07:43

We're moving in 3 weeks so it's a proper balancing act between carrying reasonable stocks (especially food) and likely wastage.

Normally I try to restock when I have started the last packet of something we use consistently - loo roll, pasta, tinned tomatoes - but will obviously try to buy these things on offer so might end up with a little stash.

It's a bit of a shock trying to run down stocks anyway - especially with a competing pressure to be prepared!

JoyceTempleSavage · 07/03/2020 07:49

I am looking forward to using up as handwash all the lynx and adidas shower gels that DS is given for Christmas from the rellies. We must have at least 50 lurking under his bed.

£10 a tube folks. PM me for details.

bellinisurge · 07/03/2020 07:50

"Ignore bellinisurge, she is trying to score political points on this, she unironically shared some start up gov petition"
@Justanotherlurker , if you are talking about the close the schools petition thread, I went on that thread and said trust the chief medical officer instead. Several times.Get it right, please.
If you are talking about me sharing the Parliament website link to enable people to lobby their MPs regarding the problem for people on zero hours contracts with getting no money, hell yeah. In fact, here it is again. What's "political " about that. www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-an-mp-or-lord/

Toffeecakes · 07/03/2020 07:51

I went out last night to do our usual shop and it was carnage. The shelves for toilet rolls were bare, no dry pasta, no dry rice, nothing with anti bac on it at all. The painkillers were all gone, I couldn't even get calpol.

A family using the till next to me had a trolley each (4), putting the super noodles through the checkout one of them said 'there's 50 of those', they had one full trolley of toilet roll and kitchen roll.

Obviously shops can't stop people from buying so much, and they will be rubbing their hands at the minute, but there should be limits at the moment because of idiots like this.

We haven't even had any confirmed cases near us, nothing is closed. I bet the same people are out and about mixing with the general public all weekend, if they were that worried they'd be staying away from other people.

Ethelfleda · 07/03/2020 07:53

This does nothing to dampen my misanthropy

TamingToddler · 07/03/2020 07:55

Astonished at people that use one or two loo rolls a month! Me and DP get through 9 a WEEK! DP has Crohn's disease though, I knew we used a lot but not that much more Grin

TheStuffedPenguin · 07/03/2020 07:59

Plenty of bog roll, handwash, paracetamol etc in B&M and Home Bargains today

Is there a message in here ? Grin

countrygirl99 · 07/03/2020 08:01

I'm buying paracetamol and ibuprofen whenever I see it as DH has arthritis in his hands and DS1 sometimes get pain where he had his hip screwed back together after an accident. In cold damp weather they can get through 6 packs a week between them so we always have a good stash anyway.

CheshireDing · 07/03/2020 08:01

There’s no quorn mince where I live! I even got them to check in the back as wanted to make chilli. Bad times 😂

IceniSky · 07/03/2020 08:02

It's the unprepared people that spark panic buying. Of course people are going to start panic buying when they really think about what could happen. It isn't just about getting ill is it? In a potential pandemic situatuion there are lots of other things that could happen, and people are just starting to understand this.

And seriously, are you just going to buy a pack of what you need or get a few extra incase you can't get some next time?

Maybe in future, those who can will take more accountability for being able to weather a storm.

LightAsTheBreeze · 07/03/2020 08:03

Just order from Amazon, bulk packs are on there for delivery

Oysterbabe · 07/03/2020 08:03

I think there are few people panic buying, as in piling their trolleys high with 100s of the same thing, but lots of people picking up a few extra things. That's enough to clear the shelves. We have a 2 week stock of things in case we need to self isolate. It's sensible for people to do this where they can. Our local supermarkets seem to be coping OK at the moment.

IceniSky · 07/03/2020 08:04

Altgough, the shelves are fine where I am besides hand gel.
