@Jumpingintotheabyss for it to not be a waste of time staying at home means staying at home

Why do people not get that school staff are as susceptible to the virus as anyone else - and maybe moreso with hundreds' of kids poor hygiene routines?

At the point that schools can't be staffed, they will have to close. I have previously dragged myself in with a horrible illness but I'm not doing it with this one.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 10:14

The national health institute said the average age of those who have died was 81, with the majority suffering from underlying health problems

Mean, Mode or Median?

unluckyagain · 07/03/2020 10:14

@daisier. Don't be so dramatic - all you had to do was wash your hands.

tud41 · 07/03/2020 10:14

@YoursTunbridgeWells i thought that stat was shocking as well. especially considering life expectancy is below that age in the UK alone and throughout the world it is 72. Not saying anyone who is olders life is worth less but there is a bit of perspective there.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 07/03/2020 10:15

I disagree that you have to stay at home - you have to avoid people / places where lots of people have been. Going into the woods is ok. As long as you keep 2m away from other people. I think getting outside is important if you can, even just the garden.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 10:15

But what I described donkey were is transmission risk?

Re flights not having an impact.

Before anyone jumps down my throat re why we can't stop all flights, ferries the tunnel etc.

Let's say we had immediately done that, except for returning citizens, checked for covid at entry points, only trade in and lorry drivers checked.

How would the UK have got covid?
Maybe a few carriers slip in but I can't see as an island how it would have come here?

It come via people mixing elsewhere in the world and coming home?

HairyFloppins · 07/03/2020 10:15

@ShanghaiDiva I enjoy reading your posts as well as they are informative but also calm and rational.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 10:16

@LarkDescending
@NcFortuna
Thanks!
Some posters clearly think I am a blind supporter of a brutal totalitarian regime where we have no internet access and act like brainless automatons..

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 10:17

My hips is a totally agree.

I'm in education setting and I feel totally exposed everyday to.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 07/03/2020 10:19

@FourTeaFallOut No idea - pulled the quote from the BBC.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 10:19

Thanks everyone, am feeling the mumsnet love!
Having lived in China for 12 years I am familiar with how the govt operates, and ignoring the initial coverup/delay I in support of the action that has been taken.

Oakmaiden · 07/03/2020 10:20

It come via people mixing elsewhere in the world and coming home?

Thing is - if we had banned all travel immediately and then had no cases there would be an uproar - because obviously the fact we had no cases would show that the government had acted unnecessarily.

tud41 · 07/03/2020 10:21

@Jumpingintotheabyss just for context here. There are 40 airports in the country plus the euro tunnel and all the ports. How many people do you just want to put out of work by closing that all down? Easyjet alone not even including the airport workers themselves have over 10,000 staff!

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 10:21

I rarely listen to LBC (can’t stand ads have to turn it off) but very interesting American WHO Dr talking about it. Very positive about U.K. govt and the ability to crank it down from the oft quoted 60% infection.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 10:21

Oakmaiden there is definitely something in that.

Alkaloise · 07/03/2020 10:22

@MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately it's because in the last few years almost every social/ health/ financial etc. problem solving strategy has begun with "school should"

tud41 · 07/03/2020 10:22

Heathrow airport alone employs 76000 people!

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 10:23

I am getting very cynical YoursTunbridgeWells but I'm increasing resigned to the use of slippery language that is technically correct to offer positive spin (and stop people pulling their money out of stocks).

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 07/03/2020 10:24

Marsha that's interesting, will try and find on catch up.

I really wish I trusted the government to follow the expert advice. If I knew that was happening I'd be happier. But the school advice (not to close even if confirmed case) is just clearly batshit crazy and against all sensible public health precautions and what other countries, that in my experience act in a more evidence based and sensible way (like Germany), are doing.

I also remember BSE.

Mittens030869 · 07/03/2020 10:29

My DD2 (7) and I both have nasty viruses. I've had mine for over 2 weeks; I had a temperature for the first 12 days, it's gone now but I instead I have the most horrible cough. My DD2 has a high temperature and cough too.

They wouldn't test me for COVID-19 because I hadn't been overseas or had contact with someone known to have had a positive test result. I know it's unlikely that either of us have the virus but DD2 hasn't been like this for a very long time.

My DH works in Leeds city centre and travels by bus every day and my DDs of course go to school. We go as a family to a very large church with many different nationalities. There are no known cases of COVID-19 in any of those contexts, but I do worry about what it might be that we've both got. I know, of course, that there are also a lot of seasonal viruses too, of course.

Bessica1970 · 07/03/2020 10:33

PaulGalico “Let's all embrace 'social distancing' from threads about coronavirus. Go do something useful or interesting - read a book, go for a walk .. stop watching TV, stop looking at your phone - it really isnt doing any good. Come back in 6 -12 months and see how ridiculous you all sound..“

Good idea Paul - you first...

Camomila · 07/03/2020 10:33

I wonder if that extended ,generous hearted response to a family member in hospital is the norm in Italy and if it may have contributed to the spread ?

I think it depends on the ward/hospital. In general there's more likely to be family bringing food every day in Italy (mum lived at the hospital for months when my nonna was dying, alternating with her DBro...the same for the lady in the bed next to her, one of her daughters was always there) but they are also pretty strict in other ways (though they very kindly let me bring my baby in for 5 mins when I visited)

I think they should make school not compulsary so year 11s and 13s can do exams and people with no childcare can keep sending DC in but a lot of SAHPs could keep their DC home to reduce the spread.

QueenofmyPrinces · 07/03/2020 10:35

My husband is of the “it’s just like flu” persuasion and no matter what I say he doesn’t want to hear it.

In his defence though, I was just taking to him about the global Corona death rate and he told me to google the global annual death rate of the flu to see how things compare...and let’s just say it didn’t do much to strengthen my argument.

I’m constantly swaying between asking myself if I need to be genuinely worried or whether the mass panic is really necessary.
