@Willow2017 it’s not about bravely just bloody common sense

Geneva1994 · 06/03/2020 21:26

@Willow2017 have a read of this

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3838364-To-have-just-stocked-up-on-loo-roll-and-canned-foods

Willow2017 · 06/03/2020 21:31

Yeah cos saying the vast majority of people are scared shitless but you.arent is not saying you are much better than the rest of the stupid plebs.

Nobody is encouraging mass panic just sensible precautions we can all do. Its not that hard to understand. I am sure the WHO have a bit more of a clue about the potential risks than the op.

frumpety · 06/03/2020 21:31

Sorry missed a bit at the end of that post, I am not panicking about the virus , but that does not mean I don't think everyone should be concerned, being concerned could saves lives. Wash your hands, don't cough and sneeze all over everyone, get tissues and use them, don't visit people if you are ill. Anyone who is immunosuppressed will thank you for these small actions.

hoovermyrug · 06/03/2020 21:33

I'm genuinely happy for you if you don't feel worried. I do. I've prepared as best I can without going overboard and now there's nothing else I can do. Trying to just get on but it's hard when the media is fuelling the obsessive worry, I find it sad that people are so dismissive of others fears/worries but I guess that's the selfish world we live in now - I'm alright jack. Anyone who deigns to feel otherwise must be nuts.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 06/03/2020 21:34

I'm with you OP.
You are SO much more likely to die of cancer or a car accident 🤷🏻‍♀️

sonjadog · 06/03/2020 21:34

What has really been an eye-opener for me is that washing your hands and not sneezing and coughing over people is changing people´s behaviour. I kinda thought that that was what everyone already did...

Thefaceofboe · 06/03/2020 21:35

@sonjadog I’ve noticed the soap in works toilets has been going down a lot quicker...

OP posts:
frumpety · 06/03/2020 21:43

sonjadog yep , you would hope so wouldn't you, but a reminder can't do any harm Smile

CorianderLord · 06/03/2020 21:57

Yeah I'll be fine. People at my work are more excited than anything else.:. People want two weeks off work

CorianderLord · 06/03/2020 22:22

Sonjadog - I always washed my hands but now I wash them for longer and with more soap. I'm amazed at how much cleaner everyone is being and hope it continues when the virus is over.

If it did I wonder if illness rates would drop dramatically enough for stats to pick it up

SweetMarmalade · 07/03/2020 08:57

Not one box of paracetamol left in my local Waitrose yesterday, the shelves were empty! I think this silly panic buying needs to stop!!

Lycidas · 07/03/2020 09:22

OP is ignoring every post from HCPs and pharmaceutical industry workers explaining why some caution and preparation is necessary...

ManonBlackbeak · 07/03/2020 09:32

I think the media is making things worse definitely. The DM in particular seems to be getting off on whipping people into a frenzy. The government are also totally inept (no surprise there) and are doing little to try and keep people calm. All this is fuelling the panic buying etc.

LameSword · 07/03/2020 09:51

I am shitting myself over it to be honest because I've got asthma and other health conditions. I've got health anxiety so I'm always worried about being ill or dying or my loved ones being ill or dying so stuff like this has me researching and panicking. I know for a fact I wouldn't be half as scared if I wasn't on Mumsnet though. I come on to read normal threads and can't escape the (sometimes hysterical) Coronavirus threads. I shouldn't click on them but I can't help myself! I'm very easily swayed so one person can spout a completely made up theory about it and I'll be convinced that's what's going to happen. I should really stop coming on here all together to help my anxiety, but I won't.

Hardly anyone I know in real life seems bothered about it. Barely seen anything about it on Facebook apart from memes taking the piss out of panic buyers. Not seen anyone in masks or anything like that and I live in an area where we have a few cases. The only thing I've seen is the empty hand sanitiser and painkiller shelves in shops.

I work in a care home and aside from a few posters about not visiting if you're ill or if you've visited any of the affected areas, there's not much of a fuss about it. We're just doing the same as we would or flu or Norovirus.

KahlanRahl · 07/03/2020 10:03

I'm a bit worried that people are trying to be so blase about it. I have underlying health conditions and virusses can be dangerous for me. I would like that people who feel that they are starting to be sick, be that flu or corona, would warn me before they come and see me and I'd like people to wash their hands more. It's fine if you are okay with being ill but please be more mindful of the people around you who don't want to get it.

isabellerossignol · 07/03/2020 10:06

I find it sad that people are so dismissive of others fears/worries but I guess that's the selfish world we live in now - I'm alright jack. Anyone who deigns to feel otherwise must be nuts.

But it's the worried stockpilers who are stripping the shelves bare and ensuring that others can't get hold of paracetamol etc that are behaving selfishly, not the people who are encouraging general caution and handwashing.

I'm concerned, of course, and I have relatives who are in high risk categories. But I was also concerned when I had flu earlier this winter and didn't want to pass that to them either.

I'm concerned for the people who will lose their jobs, the people who won't be able to afford food, the people who might face eviction for not being able to pay their rent, if we allow this mass panic to continue. I fail to grasp how concern for others is selfish.

isabellerossignol · 07/03/2020 10:08

And none of my doctor friends are in a panic about this either. Their concern is around the overstretching of the NHS by the worried well, not around the transmission of the virus.

Thefaceofboe · 07/03/2020 10:11

OP is ignoring every post from HCPs and pharmaceutical industry workers explaining why some caution and preparation is necessary...

Caution and preparation are necessary sure. Hand washing and basic hygiene not hysteria and clearing the shelves of your local shop!

TroysMammy · 07/03/2020 12:35

I've come to the conclusion that the selfish panic buyers are the ones not listening to the NHS advice of exercising caution and washing their hands properly. It will be these dickheads that will firstly turn up at their GP surgery or hospital with symptoms and not stay at home eating their 7kg of pasta and frantically wiping their arses.

Skyejuly · 07/03/2020 12:37

I'm still going about my day to day activities and been into town. I am scared though and I felt glad I wasnt worrying about anti bac and supplies as have loads.

AgentCooper · 07/03/2020 16:42

@isabellerossignol yes. I work in the languages dept at a university and management have been frantically trying to plan what we’ll do with regard to our pre-sessional English courses over the summer as most of the students are Chinese. This is my department’s biggest source of income by some distance. Add that to the withdrawal from Erasmus due to fucking Brexit and there are a lot of people seriously worrying about their jobs.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 16:59

Yes, economic consequences are enormous. All the small businesses near my home were closed for 4 weeks, Cathay staff have to take three weeks unpaid leave before the end of June, flight routes being cut, language schools, tourism industry..
There are tough times ahead.

TheHagOnTheHill · 07/03/2020 17:12

I'm not worried. As an HCP I'm resigned to getting it,our hospital has barely started mask testing yet.
