Am I....????

Why post on one of the only two where people who are living normal, rational lives are congregating?

Because it’s an AIBU thread, and we’re here to tell the OP that in this situation fear is a perfectly normal, rational response.

Running around buying all the antibacterial handwash and having panic attacks isn’t rational, because it’s counterproductive. Making preparations for the inevitable curtailment of our normal activities is just sensible.

bellinisurge · 08/03/2020 16:20

More willy waving on our local community FB pages about how silly people are. I agree it is silly to be panic buying now when you could have built up your pantry earlier more slowly and within budget.
But if it's a choice between being able to wipe your arse and not being able to wipe your arse when forced into self isolation, I wonder which is actually silly.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 08/03/2020 16:22

I'm genuinely not bothered by Corona Virus thus far. Nothing I've read makes me anything more than mildly concerned. Maybe it's always having been ill and living with health risk all my life. I am not running out for hand sanitiser, aggressively cleaning or moving seats if I see someone poorly on the bus.

Yes I do take a dim view of people who panic buying etc. You are making things worse for the vulnerable by buying up supplies, especially those that were cheaper.

My sister has friends making excuses not to go into work. She is a nurse at a London hospital and now they are extra stretched. There's no virtue in panicking. It's just passes the burden to those who calmly keep shit together.

I really don't get the panic. What am I missing? I'm more concerned about terrorism.

Alsohuman · 08/03/2020 16:29

Because it’s an AIBU thread

Actually it’s not.

we’re here to tell the OP that in this situation fear is a perfectly normal, rational response

You might say that but I, like OP, disagree. I think the level of fear is far from rational.

bellinisurge · 08/03/2020 16:30

Prepped ages ago. Not panic buying.
Concerned. Not afraid.

woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 16:52

Have a read through some of the threads in the coronavirus topic.

I have and I don't see anything I would define as "hysterical". Some people are very concerned but that will usually be because they are at high risk so I think that is totally proportionate. You obviously see something different but how do you know that the person writing is "hysterical". What are they saying that is "hysterical"

ScrambledSmegs · 08/03/2020 16:55

@PinkyU because my friend's uncle died today from it.

woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 16:55

If you want a definition of hysteria check out some of the multitude of other threads in this section.

What makes you think I haven't? I haven't read anything that isn't factual information and there is no way of telling that the person writing is hysterical.

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 16:56

@woodchuck99 not sending your child to school because someone 300 miles away from you has tested positive for coronavirus is just plain ridiculous.

not sending your child to school because someone 300 miles away from you has tested positive for coronavirus is just plain ridiculous.

So who has decided no to send their healthy child to schook because someone 300 miles away has coronavirus? I have seen posters very concerned because their child or they are very high risk but I haven't seen any posters with healthy children deciding not to send their child to school..

userxx · 08/03/2020 17:01

What are they saying that is "hysterical"

Wearing a binbag to go to the toilet...... now that's hysterical 🤣

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 17:06

@woodchuck99 here an example.

AIBU to not be worried shitless about coronavirus like the vast majority?
OP posts:
woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 17:15

@woodchuck99 here an example.

Without reading the rest of the post it's impossible to know whether that person's child is healthy or that the poster being hysterical .I bet the vast majority of people said that they would be sending their child to school so hardly an example of mass hysteria.

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 17:19

@woodchuck99 Hmm sure

OP posts:
PointlessAddict · 08/03/2020 17:20

There was someone on one of the threads who deregistered her children from school. I don’t think they were particularly at risk from what I can recall. Absolutely ridiculous. I feel sorry for children growing up with a parent like that who can’t accurately assess and respond to risk.

Alsohuman · 08/03/2020 17:21

Of course @woodchuck99. Whatever anyone had posted, you’d have argued with. It was obvious from the off which way that was going.

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 17:23

Yep Alsohuman there’s no point even replying really. Sounds like woodchuck would argue with a brick wall

OP posts:
woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 17:23

@Thefaceofboe I have just read that thread and I can only see one person out of 150 that thought it reasonable to keep children off school at the moment. It hardly demonstrates that the vast majority are hysterical. The so-called panic buying doesn't demonstrate anything either apart from the fact that people are selfish or just worried that all toilet rolls are going to go and they won't be able to buy it when they need it.

PointlessAddict · 08/03/2020 17:24

“Prepping” in general is weird seems a bit odd as well although they’re at least not panic buying all the bog roll. What are they prepping for? Coronavirus? Brexit? Nuclear War? A N other undefined event?

Literally no one in real life does this and yet on MN there’s a whole board of them at it. Utter madness.

woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 17:27

Literally no one in real life does this and yet on MN there’s a whole board of them at it. Utter madness.

So you understand that MN doesn't represent the vast majority when it comes to prepping but if someone on MN says they are going to keep their child off school you decide that the vast majority are hysterical about coronavirus.

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 17:30

Stop focusing on the world ‘vast majority’ you’re obsessed. I used it once in my title and obviously it’s a massive exaggeration, get over it.

OP posts:
Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 17:30

on the words not world

OP posts:
PointlessAddict · 08/03/2020 17:31

That makes no sense woodchuck. Literally no idea what you’re on about now.

Geneva1994 · 08/03/2020 17:31

@woodchuck99 you are clearly one of the hysterical ones and quite clearly one of the post annoying posters I’ve ever seen on MN.

daisychain01 · 08/03/2020 17:32

@PointlessAddict I think it's prepping for the Zombie Apocalypse. It is a RL thing (the people who prep for possible disasters) but they tend to do it under the radar, hush-hush - so the next you see someone slipping an extra 9-pack of Andrex with Aloe Vera and Chamomile in their trolly, you'll be able to give them a wink cuz you know what's going on Grin
