Am I....????

Threads like this always bring out the clueless. What evidence is there that people are "worried shitless"? I only see evidence that people are very concerned and I think anyone who wasn't stupid would be. Whether or not you perceive yourself to be at high risk of dying or being very ill from the actual virus (I bet you don't) what about the impact on the economy and education? There is no suggestion now from anyone who actually knows what they're talking about that there is nothing to worry about so if you aren't worried perhaps that is because you don't know which end is up.

Alsohuman · 08/03/2020 11:58

Why does this have to split into two camps where the calm people mock the people who are genuinely scared? And some people showing off that they’re not ‘hysterical’. That’s great. Well done you, what heroes you are

You’re making stuff up again.

Furfockssake · 08/03/2020 12:00

Don’t be so defensive

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2020 12:01

We’re at the beginning. That’s why. China haven’t contained it - they’ve just delayed the rest of the country catching it. Every government on the planet has said that it’s not containable, all measures are to delay spread to reduce impact on health services.

But I thought the WHO had reported that the peak had passed in China? Everyone getting the virus over eg the next five years is different to everyone getting it in the next five weeks, in terms of managing resources etc.

Alsohuman · 08/03/2020 12:03

Don’t be so defensive

Seriously? It’s not me frothing.

woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 12:05

A peak has passed thanks to their very strict measures. There is no suggestion that it can't come back as soon as they stop taking those measures. The chances are it will.

Furfockssake · 08/03/2020 12:07

From what I understand China will have to deal with this all over again as the virus has started to pop up in other areas of the country. They are now in the same position as every other country as they have no idea where it’s going to emerge or where and when community transmission has occurred. They do take more draconian measures so perhaps they will continue containing it 🤷‍♀️

As far as I know infections in the UK are expected to peak in the next twelve weeks.

Furfockssake · 08/03/2020 12:08

Seriously? It’s not me frothing

😂

Ok, let’s say it’s not you frothing.

Yes, I agree, that's what I understood too. But surely the biggest risk to life and to society as a whole isn't the virus as such, but the prospect of huge swathes of the population becoming ill at the same time?

ScrambledSmegs · 08/03/2020 12:10

There's a middle ground between scared shitless and utterly blasé. Should think that an awful lot of people are in that camp.

I'm not worried for myself but like many people I have relatives in their 70s and older, some of whom have long-term health conditions and I'm obviously concerned for them.

Unfortunately I know for a fact that the reported number of people in the UK who have died from Covid-19 is going to rise today.

woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 12:12

Yes but we don't know that they have been able to delay it by more than a month or two. Really we need to delay by a year or two so there is time for a vaccine to be rolled out.

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2020 12:12

By which I mean that all delaying tactics are helpful in and of themselves? So if 50% of people are ill next week, people who are in the most vulnerable groups would be unable to access adequate medical care because there's just a shortage of hospital beds. But if the same people became ill on a rolling basis over the next year, the illness would be the same for the individual but on a societal level, it would be more manageable? And each individual would have a better chance of recovery?

That is very sad to hear.

I hadn't thought of it in terms of a vaccine to be honest. I had just thought of the whole thing in terms of delaying.

Yes but we don't know that is possible to delay it on a rolling basis for year. That hasn't been demonstrated anywhere. That is what is worrying.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 12:52

@Furfockssake
China has been successful in containing the virus in some provinces. My city of 7 million has had no new cases for 10 days. The issue now is whether the virus can still be contained as restrictions are relaxed. Restrictions cannot continue indefinitely. Office workers went back on 24th Feb, some restaurants are open, but schools remain closed.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 12:55

China has also introduced strict quarantine measures for arrivals from Italy, Iran and South Korea to avoid a second wave of infections.

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 16:03

It seems a bit morbid to come in here and sneer at those who are genuinely concerned about this

But that’s the thing, most people aren’t acting concerned they are being hysterical and it’s not necessary.

OP posts:
Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 16:05

But have some compassion and understanding for people who are at risk you can’t comment whether I have compassion or understanding from my comments on this thread. I have not said anything to suggest otherwise just that I don’t understand the hysteria.

OP posts:
PointlessAddict · 08/03/2020 16:05

Agreed @Thefaceofboe. I’m genuinely concerned. Most of us have relatives in the at risk groups, I certainly do with an older dad with cancer going into hospital this week. But concern doesn’t have to equal hysteria and panic.

woodchuck99 · 08/03/2020 16:09

Define hysteria.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 08/03/2020 16:11

People are afraid Face, and with good reason.

Great for you if you are able to remain calm, but it’s not helpful to sling misogynistic insults at people who don’t have your sangfroid in the face of a pandemic worse than any in living memory.

Thefaceofboe · 08/03/2020 16:13

Define hysteria

Have a read through some of the threads in the coronavirus topic.

Alsohuman · 08/03/2020 16:14

If you want a definition of hysteria check out some of the multitude of other threads in this section. There are enough of them. Why post on one of the only two where people who are living normal, rational lives are congregating? There are plenty of places to share the fear some of us are trying to avoid.

PinkyU · 08/03/2020 16:14

@ScrambledSmegs how do you know that more people have died today?
