Can you think of any?
Mine are mainly to do with climate change and reducing our carbon foot print.
So fewer going on cruises and flying would be great for the planet.
Less reliance of far eastern goods would also be great.

HS2 won't create 'masses' of jobs, certainly not the sort of jobs that will have been lost in retail/hospitality.

HS2 is monstrously expensive and that money will be sorely needed elsewhere.

They'll realise that investing in front line services is actually important : social workers, police, healthcare, rather than just cutting these to line Tory pockets?

What about zeri contracts? What about disabled people at home who have no one? What about HCP 's who need to work, but can't, because they don't have childcare, because the schools have closed?

managedmis · 17/03/2020 12:58

Zero, not zeri

Dongdingdong · 17/03/2020 13:01

I think it’s very possible that this is a government made virus to reduce the cost of looking after the elderly, both in terms of pensions and healthcare.

Rubbish. The cost of pensions and healthcare pales into insignificance compared with the billions the government will have to spend on bailing out businesses and the economy.

Dongdingdong · 17/03/2020 13:04

That would be a fantastic outcome but I won't hold my breath.

I'd like to see international air travel reduced massively - there's just no need for it and it's what helped spread the virus in the first place.

Heavy sanctions must also be imposed on China to clean up their act with regards to these live animal markets.

LittleRootie · 17/03/2020 13:05

The Tories have been warned for years that stripping services out will leave the country totally exposed in a crisis - well here's the crisis you bastards.

HelloToMyKitty · 17/03/2020 13:11

it will break the cycle of over-consumption (toilet paper notwithstanding grin ) and unnecessary travel

I’ll be ready to go back into full consumption mode once this is over. I just realised how much I hate cooking three times a day and cleaning up all those dishes.

Also, I now have a load of annual leave and you better believe I’ll be booking a long-haul I’m already sick of these four walls!

But my toddler and cats are loving the WFH

Seventyone72seventy3 · 17/03/2020 13:13

Just read that with Venice in lockdown, the canals are a lot cleaner and the fish are coming back!

Doubletrouble99 · 17/03/2020 14:41

That's good to hear Seventyone. I really hope that many people will permanently change their habits and , unlike Hellotomykitty will rethink their future travel plans. I for one will have second thoughts about being stuck in an aircraft for hours on end or milling around an airport. I will also never again yearn to go on a cruise!

Well Trump might not get back in for starters as he's done such a disastrous job in the USA. The environmental impact of less travel, pollution, etc cannot be dismissed.

HelloToMyKitty · 17/03/2020 15:33

Well I personally don’t see the decline of the travel industry as a positive. Don’t forget it’s a huge industry that employs many people from both first and third world economies.

Also it’s a pleasurable thing to get out and see the world and its people. If you hate travel then it’s one thing but don’t act like it’s a positive

Doubletrouble99 · 17/03/2020 16:27

I don't hate travel at all but I do feel people may very well change their mind sets and become more cautious, especially the Baby boomers who spend much of their massive pensions on cruises and long haul. I also hope that people will appreciate the environmental benefits we have seen due to the reduction in fossil fuel expended. I must also say that I really don't feel that a lot of tourism has necessarily improved or benefited many countries, certainly environmentally and decimation of so many beautiful places.

For me personally, destroying the environment isn't very high up on my list of pleasurable activities - but you crack on.

Echobelly · 17/03/2020 16:36

After all this they might finally tax Amazon properly

Womenwotlunch · 17/03/2020 16:51

People may actually get to spend time with their families.

jackparlabane · 17/03/2020 17:12

People are getting to know their neighbours better (albeit mainly online) - I've had three slips of paper through my door inviting me to contact certain numbers or join Facebook/WhatsApp groups for my street and a couple others, only one of which I was already in.

Finding that working from home is feasible in many cases when it's been denied to disabled people for years for being 'unreasonable' should make flexible working easier for people in future.

I'm saving 30-40 quid a week if I don't commute, though much of that will go on extra books and stuff to keep the kids out of my hair over the Easter hols/school closures.

katmarie · 17/03/2020 17:43

I think we're going to see a slow down in the housing market and a significant drop in prices. People are going to pass away in higher numbers than usual, and many of those that do will have owned their homes, which will need to be sold for inheritence etc. On top of that fewer people are going to be able to afford to buy, due to job cuts/losses. So I think house prices are going to drop a good bit. Which might be a bad or a good thing, depending on whether you're a home owner or aspiring to be one.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/03/2020 17:44

The UK engineering / manufacturing industry Is going to grow. That’s the biggest take away from this - production overseas for critical services isn’t a model that will work.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/03/2020 17:46

* I think we're going to see a slow down in the housing market and a significant drop in prices.*

No. I think we’ll see the opposite. Fewer houses but more buyers competing for them. I have already had 20 viewing requests for my newly listed property.

Picklypickles · 17/03/2020 17:46

All planned Hunt Meets have been cancelled, just in time for the cubbing season!

Standrewsschool · 17/03/2020 17:51

There’s lots of good community stories coming out. For example, a folk band Talisk had to curtail their US tour due to cancelled gigs, racking up thousands of pounds debts in hotel bills, new flights etc. They set up a crowdfunding page and got the money within a few days.

katmarie · 17/03/2020 17:55

Thats interesting, whereabouts are you? I wonder whether some parts of the country will cope better than others. My neighbour's house sale has ground to a halt, she's worried it's going to fall through completely, or that the buyers are going to push for a price drop. Uncertain times for sure.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/03/2020 18:11

@katmarie - I am in a commuter town for all three cities (London, Brum, Manchester), moving to another similar commuter town. most people who are viewing work are working from home

rslsys · 17/03/2020 18:31

Going forward we might get improved designs of public loos.
The idea that 4 cubicles, 2 washbasins and one hand drier form the ideal ratio may be recognised as being inadequate.
