Despite a member of my household being in an at risk group?
We always washed our hands anyway.
We haven't bought hand sanitiser. We haven't started stockpiling. We're still going to work etc
I think the current coverage is irresponsible. It's mainly causing people with underlying anxiety issues to panic.

@bingbangbing , in the days of Dunkirk, people generally had a full pantry and couldn't do " big shop" at a supermarket or even assume stuff would just be there in the shops so they could pop and get it. I can keep calm and carry on because I have a full pantry and can easily go a couple of weeks without shopping. Because I'm a general prepper and sorted this months ago bit by bit as my budget and circumstances allowed.
If you are going to use that analogy, get the other pieces of the picture correct.

They were on rationing.
Full pantry???
Tea could be potatoes with a tiny bit of bacon fat in the water. Kids have the potatoes, parents drink the water.
Hoarding was definitely frowned upon. There were posters about it and everything.
No justification for panic buying, hoarding or looting.
spongejack · 08/03/2020 15:08
Ah dear I've run out of hand soap, guess I'll
Just have to forget washing them now.... enjoy your 27 bottles all you panic buyers have, but remember it means others have none. I mean what could possibly be a consequence if some having too much and others having none?
spongejack · 08/03/2020 15:50
@EnidBlyton why else would supermarkets be rationing items?

Some people really don't think o things through!

I’m carrying on as normal except counting to 20s when hand washing . Was a bit peeved to find Waitrose low on toilet roll - why ?? ( well obvs people stocking up but not sure why - perhaps they’re reading too many threads on madmaresnet ) . Also all my fave microwaveable packet rice was low - I like that for lunch .
sleepingpup · 08/03/2020 18:10
What you are doing is what most people are doing. If everyone buys 'just one more' the. It's all gone.
Agree. Apart from a few extreme nutters.

No you don't you. No rationing here. Shops are fine. You can get everything except hand sanitizer. Parecetamol rationed to 2 as it has been for ever. Seems like people's experience s are different all over so need to be snarky.
Vanhi · 08/03/2020 18:49
They were on rationing.
Yes, they had ration cards and strict rationing. There was also a flourishing black market. So if there weren't rationing, people would have been selfish in what they bought. The general population are doing now what they would have done during WW2 but were prevented from doing by government action. And what do you think of the black market? That was pretty selfish really.
Hoarding was definitely frowned upon. There were posters about it and everything.
Yes, someone official decided to put up posters against hoarding because that is what people were doing. No hoarding, no need for posters. Don't kid yourself that people were magically better behaved during WWII. I don't doubt there were many brave people who gave up everything for our freedom. But there were also people who acted selfishly, bought food on the black market, hoarded when they could and looked after their own. If they hadn't, there would have been no need for rationing or posters.

welshfishwife, it’s not a hand gel, it’s a antiseptic soap, used in hospitals and veterinary surgeries. It’s used in particular, before operations as it’s effective for up to six hours after use. It has been proven to be an effective antiseptic and chlorhexidine is proven to disrupt cell membranes of bacteria and fungi, and can inactivate many viruses. Hand washing is much more effective that hand gels, though they are important too. A combination of both is the best defence.
sleepingpup · 08/03/2020 20:31
serious question
At what point do posters who've done nothing, do any prep for potential eventualities.
@bingbangbing and others.
If cases increase as they have in other countries- Is it at a certain number of cases? or cases in your area? or if you know someone who has it?
Or if you started to feel fluey perhaps?
or would you wait until you had to self isolate ?
(if unpredictably a work colleague had a near relative diagnosed and you were in close contact with that work colleague for example)
Would that be the point you dashed out and bought 2 weeks worth of stuff for you and potentially your family to self isolate. Do you have a plan for this? Genuinely curious.

We’ve just had a footballer in NI diagnosed AFTER he played a match, so all those on his team and the other team, now have to take precautions. He had already been toasted but didn’t feel the need to take it seriously, obviously. Now so many others have to pay for his stupidity.
I thought this diagram of the Manhattan lawyer and the aftermath, was a good explanation of what can happen if people don’t take it seriously.
