Funny how the people who plan to isolate themselves expect everyone else to keep working.

This.

People on here prepping to isolate themselves and their families. Taking kids out of school, not working. For how long, 18 months until a vaccine is available??

The same people expect others in the service sectors to keep working - supermarket workers, NHS staff and so on. Going on about getting all their shopping delivered and so on.

Some of the preppers / self isolators on other threads were berating NHS retirees for being worried about being asked return to work, and telling NHS nurses who were voicing worries about isolation and childcare that they should lose their jobs.

Selfish irrational weirdos. I don’t know anyone in real life like this but seems like there are dozens hiding away on here.

OP posts:

when a person with chronic illness dies their family normally return bags and bags of prescription medicines to the pharmacy. They do hoard, believe me.

How fucking selfish of my husband to die from cancer before his full shopping bag of controlled drugs was used up. The five types of pain relief, the steroids and the chemotherapy drugs. If only Id known he was going to die on that date, I could have told the doctor to just give me three days worth from the date if his last prescription. Hmm

I’m very caring, and empathetic. I’m afraid that empathy doesn’t extend to people stockpiling goods for their own ultimately selfish ends.

Well excuse me if this widow doesn’t want to lose her vulnerable disabled children too. Your empathy only runs to yourself, OP, which is evident from your lack of understanding.

People buying foood for their family now theres a shocker for you!
But don’t expect me to sit silently while people who hoard and isolate expect others to keep the country running.
Why would you even know that people do this, they are not going to broadcast it in RL. What I have in my store would have been bought by someone else if I didnt buy it how on earth eould that keep the country running now when I bought it 4 months ago? If I buy soemthing on bogof does that mean I should give one item back to the shop for someone else to buy because I am "hoarding food"?

You are getting more batshit by the minute.
Do you want everyone to stop buying food so errr...somebody else can buy it instead? How does that work?

You might want to think about help for anxiety when this is over.
I am glad you are not a HCP for any of my relatives, what an extremely nasty, viscious person you are. The only one with anxiety around here is you, you seem very overinvested in the fact that normal people buy more food in a week than you do while trying to excuse it as your war on waste! That doesnt even make sense, food lasts longer than one day! Oh and btw I think "you must have anxiety" was another trundled out platitude on that thread. Are you going for the whole MN bingo card?

bellinisurge · 05/03/2020 15:13

@IheartNiles , I think shaving your pubes is weird and yet I don't go on Style and Beauty and say you are all weird if you do this. Because I don't do things this way, doesn't mean other people are mentally ill for doing it.

4cats2kids · 05/03/2020 15:21

Now there’s an idea, selfishly hoarding razors so I can have a bald fanny whilst the world around me descends into chaos...

Willow2017 · 05/03/2020 15:23

A member of my family was given 6 months to live and had a string of heavy duty meds every day, they had a 3 month supply so they could live at home and be cared for by relatives. How fucking selfish of them to die 2 weeks later.

Empathy?

You dont know the meaning of the word you are a completely self absorbed poor excuse for a human being never mind a supposed HCP IHeartNiles.

KahlanRahl · 05/03/2020 15:25

OP, do you have mental health issues? You don't sound very coherent at the moment. Can you please talk to someone in real life?

bellinisurge · 05/03/2020 15:28

Op, I totally agree on tbe issue of people in the service industry. I think you need to rethink some of your other preconceived ideas about what prepping is.

Sunshinesky1981 · 05/03/2020 15:30

4cats2kids Grin you ca have my razors, I will gladly give them to you. I'm planning on growing a full Bush. If the zombie apocalypse is on the way when the heating runs out at least me fanny will be toasty warm. Then when it gets even worse I can use an old hunting knife to cut clumps of it off to use as kindling to start a fire in the wild. See who says preppers are crazy Grin

One thing ive not seen discussed on the news programmes yet is what people on a key meter are supposed to do.

And i dont think electric companies will "let them off" as was suggested on another thread.

Wilko to slash sick pay for 21,000 workers amid coronavirus outbreak
EXCLUSIVE: Letters seen by Mirror Money show that from 1 April 2020, employees will no longer receive sick pay from their second absence. It comes as the number of people affected by coronavirus reaches 90 in the UK

Londonlassy · 05/03/2020 23:59

I think some people on this thread have misinterpreted the OP who has real and valid concerns.

The people that discuss having enough food and medical supplies to treat their medical conditions if they are diagnosed with coronavirus are not the issue. People who have decided not to attend large gatherings, are doing extra hand hygiene and ceasing handshaking are all reasonable and valid actions and should be commended

My concerns (and I think the OPs) is there are people that People on MN and other forums have decided that if there is any risks to them or their family of catching coronavirus they are bunking down and withdrawing from any responsibilities they may have to society. Our society can only function if people look beyond themselves

What happens if the garbage collector, the factory work in a medication plant, the cleaners in a hospital, the cooks in an aged care facility, the gas and water utility staff start to prioritise themselves and their families when they perceive the risk is to great for coronavirus and they withdraw their services?

I am not being fanatical. I live in Australia and we have this week had coronavirus diagnosed in a care home and a number of staff have refused to go to work.

Chouxalacreme · 06/03/2020 02:00

It’s the stress of us all on broadband at once I’m worried about ! If the kids iPads go down we’re dooooooomed !

bellinisurge · 06/03/2020 06:25

@Londonlassy , agree 100% with op's concern about people in service jobs or utility workers. Have been banging on about this on here for a few days and have been scoffed at for suggesting that supermarket deliveries might be at risk due to staff shortages.
And then the op wandered off into the world where actual prepping equals short term panic buying. And, even weirder, that people stockpile meds of the dead.

Londonlassy · 06/03/2020 07:22

@bellinisurge. I agree a lot of people on this thread have focused on food delivery ceasing and said this is not an issue for them as they are sufficiently prepped but there are so many pivotal roles that society can not function without. What if these people decide they want to protect them and their own and not participate cause they want to isolate in case they get coronavirus?

MichaelMumsnet · 06/03/2020 07:44

Hi all. We're getting reports about this thread and we've removed a couple of posts for personal attacks. We don't want to have to take the thread down so please do try to post within the Talk guidelines.
Peace and love please.

emilybrontescorsett · 06/03/2020 07:56

I agree Londonlassy
I think people are being deliberately obtuse.
You can't have the attitude "Well I'm not going into work" unless you accept it is others which could mean the school staff at your child a school out themselves first so school stay shut.
Delivery drivers do the same and so your food supplies are limited.
The doctors receptionist doesn't do to work and so you don't get your perscription. I could go on and on.
People think they are so important yet when others behave in exactly the same way, they don't like it.

Dongdingdong · 06/03/2020 08:02

Couldn’t agree more @emilybrontescorsett.

Dyrne · 06/03/2020 08:20

Are there actually any posters that have declared that they plan to sit at home having the plebs wait on them hand and foot? From this thread you’d think there would be thousands...

Willow2017 · 06/03/2020 08:34

Dyme
Funnily enough there are only a couple who have been on threads like this just to throw insults at preppers.
They are the ones who have said that they arent buying in anything and if they have to isolate then friends or family or shops can just deliver to them. So those insisting that they that arent taking responsibility for themselves are the ones thinking someone else will sort it out for them yet are calling preppers all sorts of names!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/03/2020 08:49

The chances are that basic utilities will be kept running even on a skeleton basis as there will be a degree of automation.

There is a possibility that significant numbers of people may need to self isolate at once and treat themselves at home as the NHS is stretched.

I think it is part of my role to be able to support my family for a couple of weeks with food and OTC medication so stretched services can be focussed on people who can’t do that.

The mad shelf clearing is not prepping, it’s panicking. There is a world of difference between having an extra bag of pet food and buying 3 trolley loads. Some people with underlying conditions may wish to reduce their exposure risk which is not as selfish as you suggest as they are the ones who are most likely to need serious NHS intervention and there is a finite capacity at any one time.

Yes there are tin foil hatters out there but probably not that many.

I was travelling around London on public transport yesterday and the DC are still in school (much to their chagrin Wink).

vera99 · 06/03/2020 09:03

If the internet goes down I am breaking into the gin hoard pdq!

randomsabreuse · 06/03/2020 10:38

I bought 3 packs of 4 toilet roll today. Felt like a panic buyer but I'd normally buy a 9 or 12 pack (there were none) so just buying my normal amount - but felt a bit wrong.

Trying to balance moving so want minimal stock with not being completely screwed if we get exposed/shops break down. Bloody nightmare!
