To come out of retirement for Coronavirus

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/03/2020 22:15

Are you a retired nurse or doctor? I’m a retired nurse and there’s no way on God’s earth I’m coming out of retirement for this. Not because of the personal risk but the fact that I’m just done with working. Should I be more unselfish?

Since over 60 s have been advised to stay at home I am assuming this suggestion applies only to very early retirees.

Or is the messaging inconsistent.

TheVanguardSix · 02/03/2020 23:04

obviously they haven’t really thought this through

The lunatics are running the asylum.

Lidon · 02/03/2020 23:04

Surely it would be to relieve the pressure doing the routine stuff, leaving the less at risk to deal with the coronavirus stuff?

Newjez · 02/03/2020 23:05

Who do you think you are kidding mr covid, if you think old England's done...

I would hope that they would pay well. Supply and demand and all that, and I would hope they would keep the vulnerable out of harm's way, just back filling.

JaniceBattersby · 02/03/2020 23:08

My mum and her sister are recently retired nurses. I say recently retired because they actually should have retired two and a half years ago but since the government fucked them over by delaying when they were able to claim their old age pensions, they don’t much feel like coming out of retirement to help that same government.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 02/03/2020 23:09

I honestly can't believe that this is the best plan this fucking pathetic government has got! No. Just no. Of course you shouldn't feel that you have to come out of retirement! 🙈

Alsohuman · 02/03/2020 23:11

Or is the messaging inconsistent

It’s not just inconsistent, it’s contradictory. They’re a bunch of fuckwits.

LH1987 · 02/03/2020 23:17

You have done your bit, YANBU. Enjoy retirement.

BusterMove · 02/03/2020 23:17

No.
Question: are retired doctors/nurses still registered with their governing bodies?

PenelopePissedstop · 02/03/2020 23:18

If I was in the group that have been shafted by the pension protocol for women, I can’t say that I’d feel a valued member of society who should then step up to expose themselves to a potential pandemic of any sort. Having worked towards planned retirement despite all obstacles, I think I’d be taking the you can jog on option.

Pixxie7 · 02/03/2020 23:19

I am sure the government would find a way around the re-registration.

Powerplant · 02/03/2020 23:20

I’ve only been retired a week🤣 no way do I want to go back!

Babyroobs · 02/03/2020 23:23

I let my Nurse registration lapse a few months ago and I guess if it really became a critical situation where Nurse were desperately needed then I would consider helping out if they could fast track me back in without going through revalidation. I was talking about this with a colleague today who was in a similar situation although they let their registration lapse 5 years ago. I have no ITU training and would struggle in any kind of acute setting but could probably go back to the hospice where I used to work or for example a rehab ward. I think if Coronavirus really spirals the NHS is going to be in sever difficulties when you consider the perfect storm of lack of ITU beds, emergency care for elderly people if carers fall ill, NHS staff falling ill, Nurses being off for childcare reasons etc. It doesn't bear thinking about really.

madcatladyforever · 02/03/2020 23:23

I haven't retired yet but already suffer enough ageism at work, God knows what they would think of a 70 plus year old on the wards.

raskolnikova · 02/03/2020 23:25

Since retired people are more likely to be in the age categories vulnerable to coronavirus, but no young children (that I know of?) have died from it, why aren't we training up the under-10s as emergency volunteers? They're economically inactive too. Seems like the logical solution to me.

Largeyellowdaffodil · 02/03/2020 23:27

Which over 60's have been advised to stay at home?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 02/03/2020 23:27

Well, I see that 7% have voted YABU but I wish they’d explain their opinions.

Possibly something to do with your thread title.

nancy75 · 02/03/2020 23:31

Amusing that some of you think a little thing like paperwork would get in the way of people going back. Boris is well known for not being interested in the details - he wouldn’t care if you were registered or not!

faracrossthepond · 02/03/2020 23:34

@AlexaAmbidextra YANBU! You've earned your stripes chick! (And thank you!) Smile Flowers

As if there aren't enough people to cover FGS! And also, the older people (50 +) are WAY more likely to get coronavirus. So you stay where you are... in retirement!

I heard today that no-one under 10 years old has died from it, and very few people under 45 have actually... It is hitting the over 50s...

That said, it's all a load of hysteria anyway. Never known anything like it. FAR worse things have hit this country. And not that many people have died really. It is being sensationalised something awful!

Must be a slow news month!

Cwenthryth · 02/03/2020 23:34

I think if the shit really hits, then it would be a very community-minded thing to do - I wouldn’t expect it but would admire those who volunteered (obv get paid!) immensely - I’d expect retirees to backfill though - not be on the frontline in ITU/A&E. I wouldn’t think of it as helping out the government or the Tories or anything - absolutely they got us into this mess (not Covid19 but the state of the NHS) - but helping out your fellow humans in need of your skills.

SylviaC · 02/03/2020 23:34

I am not a retired HCP. I hear what people are saying but surely there a non front line, non patient contact jobs that retired HCPs could backfill if frontline staff are under pressure due to high demand. For example being on the end of a helpline or web based enquiry service.

I work part time and would be happy to volunteer in a relevant capacity to help out if it was a national emergency

katy1213 · 02/03/2020 23:35

Are they planning to pay all these retired nurses? Especially the Waspi women - but, hey, no need to pay them, they can carry on living off savings and air and maybe Coronavirus will carry them off before they qualify for a pension.

joangray38 · 02/03/2020 23:37

I know several retired drs - they won’t as they haven’t kept up with training and are no longer registered drs.

SylviaC · 02/03/2020 23:38

When I say volunteer I'm not presuming that said HCPs would be expected to work for free.

VanGoghsDog · 02/03/2020 23:41

I heard today that no-one under 10 years old has died from it

A newborn baby died in China.
