There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

It must be in Notifications somewhere, if you google it’s probably easy.

I think when I got my phone, I disabled everything that was automatically enabled, but it’s old and I can’t remember.

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/03/2020 19:06

Do you have an iPhone?

Try settings - notifications

Find the "news" option (and any apps that give news "ie BBC News app"). Click on it and there is an option for "allow notifications". Turn that off. That should sort it.

I was pregnant when the swine flu was in the news. I remember that it was the top story most days in July that year, I would watch the news and it would say that another pregnant woman was in hospital I was so stressed.

I remember one morning on radio 4 they said that in Australia the government had advised pregnant women not to use public transport. They then interviewed the health minister and said why aren’t you advising pregnant women here not to use public transport and he said that women had to use common sense.

I remember being so upset and worried and thinking our government was being so crap with advise

screamer1 · 08/03/2020 19:23

I've not caught up on the threads or the news properly so apologies if this had already been asked. But do we know the demographic breakdown of Italy deaths?

Orangeblossom78 · 08/03/2020 19:26

My DC were little babies during swine flu and don't remember much about that at all.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 08/03/2020 19:50

I agree wholeheartedly about the constant barrage of news updates on our smartphones being a large part of the problem. My own personal demon was Upday on my Samsung galaxy, which fired news updates at me several times a day whether I wanted them or not. It took me a while, but I finally managed to shut it up. This is how, in case it helps anybody else:-

Open "Settings".
Go to "Apps".
Click on the three dots in the top right hand corner
Scroll down to Upday
Click on it, then click on "Disable."
Click on "Disable" again.
It will ask you if you want to replace the app with the factory version. Click on "OK".
Click on "Force Stop" (it hasn't caused any errors for me!)

Job done! Grin

Screamer1 I just read this from bbc about Italy ..I am hoping the very high average age is reassuring, though incredibly sad.

What is happening in Italy?

Officials announced the record daily death toll in a statement on Friday.

They said the number could not be officially confirmed until health officials had "established the actual cause of death".

The national health institute said the average age of those who have died was 81, with the majority suffering from underlying health problems. An estimated 72% of all those who have died were men.

According to government data, 4.25% of individuals confirmed to have the coronavirus in Italy have died, the highest rate in the world.

The country has one of the world's oldest populations.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 08/03/2020 19:52

Sorry, I missed a step - after you click on the three dots in the top right corner, you need to click on "Show System Apps".

ScarlettDarling · 08/03/2020 19:55

@screamer1 The following was posted by Jrobhatch yesterday:

*For the people who were worried about italys high death rate, this is on world o meter:

Percentage of deaths by age group:
90+ years old: 6% of deaths
80 - 89 years old: 42% of deaths
70 - 79 years old: 35% of deaths
60 - 69 years old: 16% of deaths*

Roussette · 08/03/2020 19:56

I don't have any push notifications of news coming through at all on my phone.

That way means I can decide to go and check something out if and when I want. It would drive me bonkers otherwise.

Superbrew · 08/03/2020 20:03

I think I have managed to disable media notifications thank you!!

screamer1 · 08/03/2020 20:04

Thank you @Superbrew and @ScarlettDarling

Just a reminder that whilst cases are increasing, recoveries are also increasing. More than half the people who were ill have now recovered.

86% of currently infected patients are classified as mildly ill.
94% of closed cases were people who recovered.

I'm anxious but have to keep reminding myself to just keep going with the hand washing, keep trying to do something nice each day and keep trying to see the flip side of any statistics/numbers being bandied about.

AutumnRose1 · 08/03/2020 20:25

EsIo “ Just a reminder that whilst cases are increasing, recoveries are also increasing”

This is the thing. They report extra cases every day but most of those people will be ill and then recover. It’d be nice to have an official “much better today” figure!

HonestlyItsFine · 08/03/2020 20:48

I'd like to know how many people in the UK are now recovered, and also how many are actually in hospital.

bluebellation · 08/03/2020 20:49

I've been reading this thread as I'm not one to panic about anything but have had the odd little panic as I've realised that, at 65, I'm perhaps classed as an 'older' person 🤨, but am happy to report that we went to our local fish restaurant last night and it was as busy and buzzing as ever. We live very rurally so perhaps feel safe for now but the shops are still stocked and nobody is going overboard , just being sensible.

Keynote1 · 08/03/2020 20:50

Thank goodness for the last two posts, have been doing great today then looked at the DM headline and twitter and full on panic. Also not helped by the fact that I have been told by my daughter that my 8 year old granddaughter who I looked after last week has been crying about the virus because she picked up how worried I was, I feel so upset that I may have upset her by being anxious, I didnt mention it at all but obviously with everything in the press and my not being my usual self she has got worried. Apparently daughter has had a chat and she is ok but I feel so bad now.

MarshaBradyo · 08/03/2020 20:52

Keynote I know it’s too late but DM and Twitter are the worst places to go. Try not to go to media that is anxiety-inducing. Be calm, it’s ok. Breathe, take it easy.

Superbrew · 08/03/2020 20:59

Keynote1 my 6 year old daughter told me last week "coronavirus scares me" , it broke my heart. I have been very careful not to mention anything around them and she still had anxieties so I had to talk with them about it...but my point being your granddaughter is probably picking more things up from school/outside world then just from you so please dont be too hard on yourself.

HonestlyItsFine · 08/03/2020 21:10

I've also just read this on Reddit (This is a direct copy and paste of someones post, which I am not sure is allowed, please delete if not):

I'm not a specialist, but looking at the current numbers for the Hubei province, which is the location hit the hardest, it looks like so far the average person is very unlikely to catch it. Hubei's population is 58.5 million people. Currently 67.5k people have been infected there (0.1% of the population), and the new cases are declining rapidly there

That gives me some reassurance. YES, 67.5k is a LOT of people, but it's only 0.1% of the population.

Jrobhatch29 · 08/03/2020 21:22

@HonestlyItsFine thats what i thought. In his Q&A session with mp's chris whitty said 20% of hubei was infected n i had no idea where he gets that from?

HonestlyItsFine · 08/03/2020 21:24

Even 20% is not THAT bad. I don't get where people are saying 80% could be infected, if that's the case?

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/03/2020 21:34

I think the 80% figure is an absolute worst case scenario. If it reached that level we would pretty much be at herd immunity levels which would protect the remaining 20%.

I don't believe there is any genuine anticipation that 80% of the population will contract the virus.

Jrobhatch29 · 08/03/2020 21:57

My worry is that our government is basing their plans on the assumption theres thousands of undiagnosed mild and asymptomatic cases which brings down the mortality rate. I really hope thats whats happening in italy x
