There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

Well done every one this is so good too read and keep things in perspective. There are 67 million people in UK. We have 85? cases and around 20-30 of them must not be active and recovered by now. Some were in France and some were on a cruise ship but still counted. So maybe active only 40 odd people out of 67 million maybe...Its good to keep this in my head ! XX

magimedi · 04/03/2020 17:20

I think that having a few momewnts of worry, from time to time, about it all is normal but I think we can all help each other to keep it all in perspective.

I'm well over 60 & think back on the various world crises I've lived through, cold war, nuclear winter threat etc etc and I don't remember such panic and hysteria as there has been over this virus. I honestly blame the media & urge you all to ration yourselves & step back from the internet/TV/papers etc.

When I go on holiday I scarcely look at the news, websites etc. I might glance at news headlines every couple of days & never post here or any where else. I always come home feeling so chilled!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/03/2020 17:35

@Keynote1

My dc didn’t like washing hands from preschool. But I used to pre fill the sink with warm water (depends on how far you have to travel). Lots of bubbles and a few bath toys. Straight into the bathroom and look what fun we can have here. Gave me piece of mind the hands were washed without them realising.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 04/03/2020 18:02

@Eebahgumlass - thankyou so much for that link (and @RapidRainbow for starting the thread, and all the contributors). I shared it with my DH who works in HR, and he's shared it with his colleagues who have filed it to reassure anxious employees.
Before I discovered this thread, I don't mind admitting I was disappearing down a bit of a rabbit hole, not helped by The Other threads, and pretty much certain I was going to worry myself into a nervous breakdown sooner rather than later; you have all helped to me regain some perspective and common sense and go back to enjoying life. I (and my poor long-suffering DH Smile ) thank you all!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/03/2020 18:26

The Duke of Cambridge has been in Ireland today, apparently he spoke to people including a paramedic, and said he thought it was alot of hype. He said the media were hyping it up. He didn’t think it was a concern which actually calmed me down.

tud41 · 04/03/2020 18:31

It's nice to hear positive things from you guys. I try and put some of these points across on the other threads but the scaremongers won't have it and just quote the worst case scenario figures as if they are facts... Here is one from today which is really positive.. Look at the graph of active cases... It has actually been declining since mid February.. I know other countries have not had big outbreaks and it could change but you can't argue with numbers..

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/03/2020 18:35

tud41 that’s a positive graph. I have heard it on the radio today. Interesting how the media pick some points, and leave others out. They said the virus had peaked a few weeks ago in China.

Jenasaurus · 04/03/2020 18:42

Not one MNetter has been tested for this and most people don't know anyone that has been

tud41 · 04/03/2020 18:42

Exactly the media know people will not buy their papers or read their stories unless it is scary as that's what sells.. Also people need to remember that world governments will act on big stories in the media whether the agree with everything or not for the pure reason that their support is driven from the media and if they were just seen to ignore something the media is telling us is a big deal then they would lose support for this.. The Green Day lyric strikes very true here one nation controlled by the media it is not the government or scientist that tell us what is important it is what the media thinks will sell stories...

Treaclespongeandcustard · 04/03/2020 18:44

You guys are amazing! Thanks so much for starting this thread, I’ve been worrying about this a lot. It’s really reassuring to read all the positive comments Star

HeresMe · 04/03/2020 18:48

There has been a big increase today but according to reports 29 of these had just come back from areas that are at high risk so whist it is a big increase it isn't like it is crazily infecting people in the UK.

StCharlotte · 04/03/2020 19:08

My two positives from today:

First, out of a population of over 66 million only 86 have tested positive.

Secondly, I changed from our usual talk radio station where they talk about nothing else, to Radio 2. Nice music and a couple of minutes of news every half an hour. Much less alarming.

Love2cycle · 04/03/2020 19:12

Ha just remembered y2k. How much scaremongering there was around it and then nothing happened!

autismmum2 · 04/03/2020 19:15

Fab fab thread!! How do I opt to hide the other threads in MN?

Eebahgumlass · 04/03/2020 19:17

Feeling much better today as well. Am only coming onto this thread from now on! @Zoidbergonthehalfshell I saw that article linked on one of the other threads and thought it was on point for all of us over here. Will keep re-reading it too and glad you found it helpful. I am actually looking on my LinkedIn feed for content and analysis because I am finding it a lot more measured and sensible than the mainstream media. I came across this article which is also excellent and just shows how easy it is to get sucked in.

www.worth.com/how-mass-hysteria-is-making-coronavirus-worse-than-it-actually-is/

He says ' Comparing the 2 percent so-called case fatality rate of SARS-CoV2 with the widely reported 0.1 percent case fatality rate of the seasonal flu is like comparing apples to orangutans. In the latter case, the study’s authors note that the denominator (and numerator) value includes estimated presumed mild cases that didn’t seek medical attention, which is a vast number. In the former case, the denominator reflects only those that are test-confirmed, presumably because most of them were sick enough to warrant being tested in the first place (keep in mind that test kits are in very limited supply).'

This makes sense and is really helping to keep things in perspective for me.

madeyemoodysmum · 04/03/2020 19:22

My friends dd and another child at school both negative. Just my dd results to come now. I'm sure it's negative too.

CaveMum · 04/03/2020 19:26

@tud41 completely agree with your comment about the Government wanting to be seen to be acting. DH is Ex-military and a few years ago was involved I. The response to the devastating hurricanes in the Caribbean. He was part of the team trying to pull together all the aid that needed to be flown out but the MOD made them fly half-empty aircraft out there just so that they could say supplies were on their way. They only needed to wait another 24 hours or so before they would have had enough to fill the aircraft but it’s all about the optics of being seen to act.

SureTry · 04/03/2020 19:30

I'm so glad I found this thread. I suffer with anxiety and the last few days have really taken a toll on me. I feel as though I've been down the rabbit hole on the other thread. I've deleted my news app and will be sticking to this thread from now. Just want to say thanks to the many great posters on here who have shared factual information and helped to put a lot of things in perspective for me, I really appreciate it.

Alsohuman · 04/03/2020 19:37

Well, I’m back. The train journeys were both much less crowded than usual and the shops and the place where we had lunch were nigh on deserted. I think the real threat from all this will be the economy nose diving, based on what I saw today.

Incidentally the loos in the restaurant had a basket piled high with loo rolls, the preppers would have had a field day!

Iheartbaby · 04/03/2020 19:40

Thank you for this, I have been on the other thread it was making me feel ill. This thread has made me feel calmer

RapidRainbow · 04/03/2020 19:44

I think we have to accept that numbers will rise here because we haven't stopped travel, people are continuing to come into the country and so with them bringing the virus. Only 3 have been un-traceable but that doesn't mean they hadn't come in close contact with a positive tester and just hadn't remembered/thought it significant contact - could you honestly say everywhere you have been and everyone you have been close to for the last two weeks??

Gobsmacking to see the graph showing a global decline!

OP posts:
Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 04/03/2020 20:04

This thread is really really helpful.

I have very bad health anxiety and am worried about passing my worries over this onto my son (but hey at least he's started washing his hands more)

My hands are cracked and sore from all the washing...quite funny when you think about it.

My positive from today is the article someone posted on That Other thread. Basically 2 strains of the virus. The really aggressive one is dying out and a milder version is continuing to circulate.

In a virus, being aggressive makes it die so they mutate to become milder and keep on going ...Totally paraphrasing but that's the gist. The one circulating most now is the milder version. That's good news

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/03/2020 20:08

I had read about the two strains, but couldn’t work out which was the dominant strain.

Positive news.

Keynote1 · 04/03/2020 20:12

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady - I hope that was the right way to read ot, I went into a panic reading it the other way.

Namechanger20183110 · 04/03/2020 20:15

@tud41 I have also been posting positive comments on the main thread but largely get ignored.

They all seem to be cynical of countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia etc reporting low numbers and high recovery rates, or saying it's because their governments/healthcare are better. Ignoring the fact completely that all of these countries with better than average results are currently warm climates, thus supporting that it WILL calm down eventually and we will get it under control (it's not the end of the world as we know it, to quote a poster on that thread).

The other positive I wanted to share (sorry if this has been posted) is about the 3.4% death rate being bandied about following the WHO statement. But the same statement says that that figure is a global average and is being massively skewed by the 6.6% death rate of the USA - which we know is because they are barely testing anybody other than those that appear to be severely vulnerable (and as supported by the statistic posted by a pp above)
