Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

1000 replies

mids2019 · 05/10/2026 05:49

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

According to the report, 15,478 civilians, including 1,216 women and 943 children, were killed during the period, while 35,654 others were injured, including 6,348 women and 4,283 children.

Now I'm not great at math but almost 15,478 isn't greater than the number killed in Gaza over the past 3 years, nevermind the number of Arabs Israel has killed since it's inception.

You seem to be under the impression that the Houthis killed everyone in the Yemeni civil war, a quick read of your own Wikipedia link would have educated you a little on it. Perhaps don't use others suffering to try and score points when you can't be bothered to even read what they have gone through.

It isn't like the killings in Gaza where Israel have slaughtered pretty much every killed Palestinian there.

Horrific statistics, truely heartbreaking . I’m just not sure of the context of your argument, or what point you are making. Is your point that Israel’s genocidal actions in Palestine should not be called out? Or that Irish people (in the context of this thread title, and with the aim trying to respond to the thread question) should not call out their actions unless they are going to speak up equally for all oppressed and brutalised people? If that’s the case, others on this thread have tried to explain the connection between Ireland and Palestine as colonised people. It’s been explained, it’s unpalatable to some English people, but certainly not all. it makes some uncomfortable and they resort to scorn and denial. If there’s more to your point happy to hear it.

You may think you have a lot Im common with the people who cheered as the denuded body of a murdered teenager was paraded through the streets of Gaza. Personally I have nothing in common with people like that - and I grew up in a nationalist community in Northern Ireland during the troubles, so I’m guessing I have a lot more personal experience of conflict than you do.

I was at school with Patsy Gillespie’s children, a man whose murder by the IRA sickened ordinary people around me. All nationalists, and yet nobody I knew went out to cheer when his body was blown to bits. In fact everybody except the most extreme IRA supporters was disgusted by it.

I don’t understand what has happened to Ireland but there seems to be a disneyfication of the troubles by people who would have been too frightened to set foot in NI while the troubles were ongoing.

As for the idea that Palestinian Arabs are the “true” natives to Judea, when Israel is mentioned a number of times in the Quran, while Palestine appears, ehh, zero times in it, well I don’t know what to say. You do know that the Arabs came out of the Arabian Peninsula in a series of wars called the Muslim Wars and colonised much of the Middle East and North Africa.

I mean, the clue is in the names. Plus the fact that the Al Aqua mosque is built on top of the ruins of the Jewish Temple whip is hundreds of years older.

How many Jewish people do you know? My friend walked through Dublin looking visibly Jewish a few weeks ago, and got called a baby killer or similar several times on that one walk. Just because he looks Jewish. (He is not Israeli, for those who say the Irish are anti Israel, not anti semitic - which I do genuinely believe to be the case for some Irish)

I have lived in Ireland for longer than I have lived anywhere else. I love Ireland. I think there should be a United Ireland. I love Irish people. But the last three years have been increasingly difficult for Irish Jews.

Fortunately there have been very few violent incidents here, but Jewish people are scared. Jews are deeply traumatised people. I grew up with Holocaust survivors, so its not history to me. Its real life. There are indeed people out there who want to kill me, because I am Jewish, just like they killed my great grandmother and other relatives. October 7th just cemented the fears we all have. The stories we grew up with - like my neighbour who watched her children being murdered during the holocaust - that happened to people we know, or friends of friends, 3 years ago on Simchat Torah. Events such as Bondi or Heaton Park remind us that we are not safe wherever we are, that it doesn't matter what our political views are, just us being Jewish and attending a synagogue service or Chanukah party makes us deserving of death, even if we are 10 years old. Every Jewish event needs security or people are just too scared to attend.

I used to not be scared, but now I am. I don't know if some crazy Irish person will wake up one morning and decide i am the perfect target. I hate the way my Jewish friends are made to feel in this beautiful island with so many wonderful people.

I don't know why Irish people are the way they are. Terrorist connections from the 70s? inherited trauma from the famine? (so why did Ireland do so very little to help holocaust victims/refugees?) Maybe its simply that most Irish people have never met a Jewish person.

I’m a bit late catching up with this but I do want to say I am very sorry to hear this
@Jewishcraic
Im not Jewish and the Irish people I know are not antisemitic but Ive found it very polarising listening to the views on this thread. I do now think Ireland seems to have an antisemitism issue in as much as they have emboldened the antisemites to say things under the guise of being “pro Palestine”
We have the same issue in the UK.
I hope the Irish people you know have expressed their sympathy and support for you on this day of Jewish mourning for the victims of October 7th.

Most people, in Ireland and people who identified as Irish, at that time, in the North, opposed IRA violence. I think that point has been made clear several times on this thread. So you are merely repeating it. In fact if you grew up in a nationalist area, you more than others, will appreciate that many people can and do support a united ireland but don’t support violence or terrorism to get it.

I’ve no idea what you mean about “disneyfication”. I’m not sure what you are getting at there. That wouldn’t tally with my experience at all. And saying that doesn’t tally with the fact that right now in the north, there is strong support for Palestine in nationalist communities and strong support for Israel in loyalist communities. The support, on both those different sides, can feel different to the South actually. Because a small percentage of it glorifies violence and you don’t see this in the South. Also both sides clearly identify with their corresponding side because of their lived experiences.

While support for Palestine, in the South is rooted in its colonial history. N.Ireland is part of that but it’s not the only part.

I think a positive is the number of countries that behave like Ireland in events such as football and the Eurovision song contest and we can therefore see Ireland as being an outlier in sporting and arts institutional opinion. Ireland effectively have raised a flag saying we have Jews and it's not a great look and one I hope they reflect on.

It's not a good look, you're right.

All the justification about colonisation etc it's nonsense. Israelis pulled out of gaza in 2006 most very reluctantly. Look what hamas did with all the millions in aid given, built tunnels and bought weapons!

They don't want a 2 state solution they want a one state solution and the death of all Jews. Many openly say this so I've no idea why some cling onto to this fairy story that 'aww they just want to live peacefully but the Israelis keep killing them' nonsense. Hamas and all the other little murderous factions plus their many fans in gaza want to kill Jews.

We should all be thanking Israel for trying to get rid of terrorists.

Not much in the news about 'pro pal' marches yesterday so maybe some had some decency afterall.

It was a great post by @Emilesgran

I understood what she meant by the “Disneyfication” of violence to mean the way the symbols of violent paramilitary activity have been sanitised and even glamorised by groups such as Kneecap and by street art .

Kneecap might say their adoption of balaclavas , the name Kneecap etc is all a satire but that is undermined when they post themselves reading Hezbollah propaganda, call for Tory MPs to be murdered, wave Hezbollah flags at their concerts etc. I think” disneyfication “ may refer to that in that it makes terrorism seem more benign.

I’m also baffled by why I had so much push back over the connection between the situation in NI and Palestine . It’s obvious that connection exists when you see how Kneecap use the symbols of Irish paramilitaries and Hezbollah and Hamas.
