Conflict in the Middle East

Is the green party starting to regret it's association with Islamists?

The green party, ostensibly about climate protection and general progressive values seems to have gotten into bed with Islamist sympathisers and the amount of anti semitism and basic hatred of their own country is now obvious.

The green party now at least locally are known as a party that has sympathies towards all manner of Islamist causes including Hamas's objective to wipe Israel of the face of the Earth.

Wouldn't be surprised if they produce a motion declaring climate change a Jewish conspiracy........

Well the greens have lost and it would be interesting to see how much the eradicate Israel policy cost the greens. I think this notion has tarred to the party deservedly and I don't know how they can get out of this without a reversal of policy and a massive apology to Jews (even this may not work).

It is a massive deserved blow to those who associate Zionism with racism and for those who wish to use Zionist as a slur against Jews.

Several people on other boards are saying they will no longer vote Green as a result of this policy being voted in.

Most Green party voters are decent people who support that party because they care deeply about the environment.

Unsurprising that traditional Green voters now want to distance themselves from a party that has voted for Israel to disappear.

What on earth are you talking about? The civil war in Mandatory Palestine started the day after the UN voted for the Partition Plan.

At that time not a single Arab had lost their home, and the only ones who had been brutally oppressed, tortured and killed were the Jews (see for example the Hebron Massacre).

In the 1948 Declaration of Independence, the official statement called for the Arabs to join the Jews in building the new state, on the basis of equal rights and equal citizenship. Indeed the ones who remained are now Israeli citizens, which is why 20-25% of Israel is Arab.

I think the way Israeli propagandists try to rewrite history is actually sometimes hysterical. Other than the bombings targeting Palestinian civilians in market places and others going back to the 30's, Israel declared independence on 14th May 1948. The Deir Yassin massacre and subsequent eradication of the village happened on the 9th April 1948, over a month before. They were so keen to give equal rights to the Palestinian population, as Herzl envisaged, they massacred the village of Tantura one week after declaring independence. The Israeli narrative is so funny.

Whereas the anti-Israeli narrative is deadly serious.

That image came through low-res, so take a look here: https://x.com/koshercockney/status/2108131508175483114

What does attacks on Jewish communities from 1400 years ago have to do with Israel which wasn't invented until 1948. Even if we were to consider it, across the entire Arab world for 1400 year, there was an incident with the Jewish communities every 20 years on average. Even in quiet years, not a single month has gone by since 1948 to Oct 7th where a Palestinian wasn't killed by Israel, let alone a year. In 2023, up to Oct 7th, on average, a Palestinian was murdered every single day.

ZP is shameless.
He has destroyed the Green Party. It’s just the anti Israel party now.
Disgraceful.

Lots of new countries were created in the 20th century
Pakistan
Jordan
Turkey
Lebanon
Syria
Iraq …
I could actually go on and on .

In each case there were people displaced.

European boundaries were completely redrawn in so many countries after the world wars. So many millions were displaced and were forced to move elsewhere - including Jewish people across the Middle East and survivors from the Holocaust .

The fact that Israel was created in 1948 and Palestinians were displaced is not unique or unusual. I agree it’s not fair - but it happened across Europe and the Middle East.
Israel has faced threats to its existence from the start - far more than any of the other newly formed countries in the Middle East. Is this because it is the only Jewish state - surrounded by Muslim countries?

Rubbish. Israel has existed for thousands of years. Jews have lived in Israel for thousands of years. The Romans invaded Israel, got fed up with the Jews’ refusal to accept the conquest and constant attempts to reclaim their homeland, and therefore tried to destroy it and remove most of the Jewish population to slavery in exile nearly two thousand years ago. Yet even though they erased the names of Israel and Judea from their males they did not succeed in removing all the Jews from the land. Jews have lived in Israel continuously for millennia, despite repeated invasions and colonisations by empire builders.

By the time Israel was recognised as a state by the modern world, it already had all the aspects of a modern state: government, democracy, a legal system, education to university level, welfare, a medical system that long predates the NHS.

Emilesgran · 09/10/2026 14:28

Palestine doesn’t exist though. Other countries “recognising” it doesn’t change the fact that Palestine doesn’t fulfill the four criteria for legal recognition as a government according to the 1933 Montevideo convention:

  • Permanent Population: A stable group of people living continuously in the territory, rather than a transient or migrating group.
  • Defined Territory: A specific geographic space with recognized or reasonably identifiable boundaries (though exact, uncontested borders are not strictly mandatory).
  • Government: An effective, independent political administration that exercises control and enforces rules over the population and land.
  • Capacity to Enter into Relations with Other States: The ability to conduct sovereign foreign policy, make treaties, and interact with other nations independently.
So for instance the fact that Gaza is ruled by Hamas and the WB by the PA means there can’t be a single Palestinian state. Neither has the capacity to make and enforce treaties with other countries either. It’s no more a state than Kurdistan or Catalonia are states. Less, actually.

To your first question - Palestine. I thought my answer to you was clear. Lots of people claim it has no right to exist.

To your second question I'm not framing Oct 7 as a terrorist attack, it was a terrorist attack.

Sorry, the post above was in response to this claim about Palestine having a right to exist.

Countries don’t have a right to exist, they either exist or they don’t.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 09/10/2026 14:33

@Twiglets1 The Greens as environmentalists is well and truly buried. A few students might have voted for them and the Greens are shamelessly courting the Muslim vote and hard left wingers. Caroline Lucas doesn’t seem keen on ZP staying as leader. Thy are also far too lax on how policies are adopted and who becomes a member. It’s the difficulties of moving from a pressure group to a political party that’s causing issues. They need to be far more professional.

157 of the 193 United Nations member states recognise Palestine. They seem to think it's a country.

Israel is recognised by 169 out of the 192 other United Nations members.

You can deny that Palestine exists if you want, like I said in my post lots of people do. Some people deny that Israel exists too. You can't stop people from having an opinion. As my post and your post shows though it doesn't just happen to Israel like the poster I was replying to claimed.

Nope they are not regretting it

Well not the ones in charge anyway

I think you’re confusing facts with opinions. I explained two ways in which Palestine doesnt fulfill the legal criteria to be a state. Those are facts. That some countries as well as people choose to ignore those facts for wishful thinking doesn't change that.

And I don’t think anyone denies that Israel exists. They don’t want it to, which is a different thing. Again, it’s people (usually the same ones) who want to pretend that their wishes are reality. But it’s the same problem as people wanting to believe that men can be women. Wanting it doesn’t make it so. No matter how loud they shout. They can intimidate others into pretending they believe it too, but that’s all.

This. New countries being created and people being displaced as a consequence really isn’t something that only ever happened in Mandatory Palestine.

Why are some people so hellbent on treating the 1948 war as a completely unique historical anomaly, while ignoring the millions of people forced to move across Europe, India, and the Middle East at the exact same time?

Question - do you ever take a day off?

I don't think it's possible to take a day off from your ethnicity or your religion.
Which means that those protesting religious hatred and anti semitism better be on their guard seven days a week too.

Yes. There has been enormous attention (from the left) on the Palestinian cause but very little focus on, for example, the Kurds , who have also been oppressed and displaced.
They are the largest stateless ethnic group in the world .
Eg Kurdish oppression from Wikipedia “ Since the 1970s, the European Court of Human Right has condemned Turkey for the thousands of human rights abuses.[201][202] The judgments are related to executions of Kurdish civilians,[203]torturing,[204] forced displacements[205]systematic destruction of villages,[206] arbitrary arrests[207] murdered and disappeared Kurdish journalists.[208]“

I do wonder if the fact that Israel ( unlike Turkey) is Jewish , has contributed to the protests and activism from the left?

So you're still insisting on the 1933 Monetvideo convention. The UN moved on from that a long time ago.

Well done for displaying your ignorance so clearly.

The written evidence are from 2,300-3,000 years old, right through to the modern era, and are backed up by archaeological evidence.

The only point at which Torah is involved in this evidence is through carbon dating ancient scrolls found in the Jordan valley.

Name me one character from the Torah who has been confirmed as an actual historically true figure. Please don't go on about the Tel Dan or Merneptah Steles. That's like a housewife in Texas saying she saw Jesus in a piece of burnt toast.
