The irony of all this is that when Theodore Herzl envisioned his Jewish homeland it was not meant to be the racist ethnocracy it is today. Zionism was never meant to be a racist ideology. In Der Judenstaat, Herzl was clear about keeping religion out of politics. "Shall we end by having a theocracy? No, indeed... We shall keep our priests within the confines of their temples... They must not interfere in the administration of the State." From his novel Altneuland, it is clear his vision was a single state solution with equal rights for all where Jews, Christians and Muslims could live together. That is the kind of Zionism I could get behind, not the brutal oppressive one that is Israel today.
