Thoughts to the victims, their families and the wider Jewish community in the UK.

The conflict in Gaza is nothing to do with Jewish people in the UK.

Police declare terrorist incident after two Jewish men stabbed in north London

The 45-year-old suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health issues, police say. They also say he attempted to stab officers while being arrested.

It makes me actually want to wear a Star of David as a show of solidarity, though that would be a bit odd as a practising Christian. So appalled by the relentless level of violence and abuse faced by the Jewish community, and the normalisation among people horrified by all other forms of racism of antisemitic language. Or the extent to which ‘Zionist’ has become a dirty word, and if you pick people up on why they think it’s so abhorrent to believe Israel has a right to exist they look at you as if you’ve got two heads.

That's an interesting idea and made me think for a moment ... would I wear a Star of David as a sign of solidarity (even though I'm not Jewish) but no, I wouldn't.

Not because I don't support the Jewish community in the UK wholeheartedly. But because I would be afraid to, and that's how bad this antisemitism in society has become.

I think they probably do at a personal level- isn’t Kier Starmer’s wife Jewish? The problem is even that gets held against them as they get accused of not holding Israel to account.

Livingonbananabread · Yesterday 08:38

(Sorry, that was in response to the post about the government not caring)

I agree and think Keir Starmer does on a personal level as he seems decent on a personal level and his wife is Jewish.

But the rise in antisemitism hasn't been a big enough political issue until recently, hope the tide is turning now.

Interview on BBC now.

I take my 7 year old grandson to a Jewish faith school every day. He has to walk through 3 large fences and gates 2 banks of security guards, and regular drills about attacks" THIS IS IN THE UK. It's a national disgrace.

Calls to ban the hate marches. "Every week Jews feel unsafe.

On BBC interview a few weeks ago the government independent reviewer of terrorism stated "in his opinion, the threshold has been met to ban the marches".

The marches spread hatred. Time to end them and move to standing peace demonstrations only.

Let’s be honest, if 2 members of a different community had been murdered in the streets this thread would be 20 pages long by now condemning the murderers and calling them all the names under the sun.
The silence says a thousand words.

It does.

If a statue had been damaged it would be longer.

The suspect has a history of violence and MH problems. It could well be antisemitism but I’m not seeing any clear link to conflict in the middle east.

And the fact that this comes after many other antisemitic incidents is just a coincidence I'm sure.

Even just now on the BBC on a detailed report about the attacks, they still couldn’t help themselves - “British Jews feel they are under repeated attack” (my italics) - why did they not just say they are under repeated attack?

And then after description of the events, and personal testimony by a witness to one of the attacks, it was “What to do to make British Jews feel safe?”

This matters because politicians like Zack Polanski have already described it as “perceived” risk, rather than a real threat.

Nottingham. Southport. Now Golders Green. People with mental health problems as severe as this should be locked away, not freely roaming our communities. Bring back secure units and round a ton of these folks into them. They can't be cured, but should be cared for.

Yesterday's attacker is a dirty anti Semite and should never see daylight again.

"It's just one after another," one member of a Jewish security group tells the BBC. "What's going on? How much more can we take?"

I really can relate to this!
Firstly a big Thank you to everyone who has posted good wishes and solidarity with us, the Jewish people in the UK
Im in S Wales and this struck really home to me. I was sending texts to my Jewish friends and they were sending to me. Two of my friends who live not far from me were actually in London intending to go to Golders Green when they heard the news and diverted. Already they don't wear kippah now in public and cover their Star of David necklace.
The truth is for years now, Jews have set their own private security patrols around synagogues, Jewish schools and Jewish neighbourhoods. I attended a Seder at the aforementioned friends house and they had informed the police who were making Extra patrols. This was in their own house!
I honestly don't know what can be done at government level to get on top of this but I feel there's a lot of, oh we must protect our Jews but s @it keeps coming.
I guess I just feel very sad that the world has learned nothing after the horrors of WW2 And the pogroms of history.

So what’s the connection with Conflict Middle East?

I don't know. Some antisemites are using the war in Gaza as an excuse I suppose.

So the man (despite violent MH history disclosed by police) might/could/may have been targeting Jews based on the fact his victims were Jews in a predominantly Jewish area. (FWIW I too think that’s likely, but I don’t think it’s proved) And that antisemitism might/could/may have been caused by Israel and the US attacking multiple countries/peoples in the Middle East. While I see the possible cause and effect in what way is this part of a discussion about Conflict in the Middle East?

Does it impact the conflict at all? Does it justify the bombing?

Of course the actions of Israel don't cause antisemitism. They just provide antisemites with a convinient excuse.

I might have known that a bunch of bleeding hearts are focusing on the police . Apprehending a man randomly stabbing strangers? How very dare they use force! They should have spoken kindly to him before letting him go on his merry way.

Crazu isn't it. Fancy using force to stop a man who has stabbed 2 Jewish men and then attempted to stab police officers.

The Green Party leader thought it was excess force. "The Campaign Against Antisemitism said the Green Party was 'not only tolerating but amplifying some of the worst rhetoric that we have seen in British politics in a generation'."

Imagine being a police officer, having to deal with dangerous individuals and also having twats like ZP and others comment on bringing the danger to a rapid end, in the US the man would have been shot, here they kick the weapon away and get you to the floor quickly, attacker might have a bomb on him. I suggest the green party idiots sign up and try taking down very violent men with cotton wool.

The leader of the Torys had strong words to say:

"Kemi Badenoch warns of an 'epidemic of violence' against Jewish people as Tory leader says 'we need to drain the swamp' on visit to scene of Golders Green attack"

We certainly need to look at the UK and how it allows hate marchers to behave and how this binary thinking of X bad Y good translates into the hate speech we see on marches and direct action (thanks for that Palastine Action et al) and the silly moronic chanting on the marches....'free free palastine' and 'globalise the intifada'). These marchers actually believe chanting that on the streets of the UK will make a difference to real people in Gaza but ignore that it causes hatred towards Jewish people here in the UK. Virtue signalling numpties their hate speech in the UK does absolutely NOTHING to help the people of Gaza.

Agreed. I think if I’d realised how ineffective KS is and how Kemi badenoch would be the voice of common sense I would have voted conservative last time

Well they also said the guy shot at the Synagogue was shot by the police, as if the police just turned up and shot someone for no reason!

I can’t speak to the truth of this because how do we know what has or hasn’t been reported? All communities experience individuals having breakdowns in their MH. I am sure that those will have lead to violence in many instances and that Jews are not magically insulated from that by their religion any more than Christian’s, Hindu or indeed atheists are. There have never been daily bombings by Muslims with MH problems “on the Tube, or restaurants, or on the street”.

This is why I think it is unwise to conflate the conflict in the Middle East with this individuals horrifying attack.

There are government statistics on what has been reported and which group suffers the most hate crimes.

In England & Wales in the year ending March 2025, Jewish people suffered 106 religious hate crimes per 10,000 population.

This compares to Muslims suffering 12 religious hate crimes per 10,000 population.

Christians and No religion were both 0 per 10,000 population.

The numbers of Jewish people suffering religious hate crimes will have only increased over the year from April 2025 to March 2026, along with the general rise in antisemitism we see in society.
