Thoughts to the victims, their families and the wider Jewish community in the UK.

The conflict in Gaza is nothing to do with Jewish people in the UK.

Police declare terrorist incident after two Jewish men stabbed in north London

The 45-year-old suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health issues, police say. They also say he attempted to stab officers while being arrested.

The attacks on Jews is appalling and again we have to look at causes and the main cause of this rise in anti semitism has been a permissive environment of new hate during pro Palestinian marches and on like activity. Anti semtitsm has almost been normlaised.....If you don't penalise appeals to criminalise chants of gloablise the intafada this is the result.

We need to try and put a stop in the bottle and have a twin strategy of educating people on anti semtism while improving policing of hate speech. We should also not be afraid of applying the law robustly just because the perpetrators of these crimes are from another minority.......

It is. People still don't understand that the Jewish people in the UK are not responsible for Gaza. All that hate speech on marches, 'globalise the intifada' has resulted in increased hatred/antisemitism here in the UK. It emboldens supporters of terrorists to take action here. It doesn't help the people of Gaza of course. It does make innocent Jewish people here fearful. Its appalling and more action must be taken to protect the Jewish community.

I don't think it's only about people not understanding that Jews in the UK are not responsible for Gaza. It's also about understanding that Iran's state-sponsored terrorism is a fundamental component of this war, from Hamas and Hezbollah to directly or indirectly supporting attacks on Jewish communities worldwide.

This ⬆️. It's state sponsored terror.

True, it is.

Agree with the above comments.

The government's independent reviewer of terrorism and state threats legislation, Jonathan Hall KC, tells the BBC that attacks on Jewish people in the UK are "the biggest national security emergency" since 2017.

"There are Brits in London in particular, Manchester, but probably all around the country, who are now thinking they cannot live a normal life. And it's not one attack, it's multiple attacks," he said.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, who represents Britain's largest Jewish community, says the incident "proves that if you are visibly Jewish, you're not safe and far more needs to be done."

How can Iran be behind it, when the bloke was Somalian? Makes no sense.

You think no Iranian extremists talk to anyone in the UK?

They could be paying him. Weren’t some of the recent attacks on synagogues carried out by random thugs with no particular political ties, who were doing it for the money - like getting a hitman to kill someone?

That's the kind of person they use. They're easy to radicalise.

That's the shocker. Why shouldn't people be allowed to be "visibly Jewish" in the UK? Makes me angry.

It makes me angry too especially when I've read Mumsnetters saying their children are afraid to be openly Jewish in schools, or they are advising their children not to be open about it, for their own safety.

Oh it's awful. School children and university students scared to wear their jewellery with a Star of David on? Not taking time off for Holy Days? Too scared to go to their place of worship?
What have we come to?

That's the sort of thing I mean. People in the UK being afraid to be openly Jewish. It's disgusting and against British values.

Totally, and I am shocked, but sadly not surprised. I wouldn't care to be a Jewish University student nowadays, if driving past my local university is anything to go by.

This.

There are vulnerable people with mental health conditions that are exploited by hatred of a particular community, way of life or perceived 'cause'. The 'cause' is all important and some people are more inclined to be radicalised than others. Some binary thinking x good, y bad, can lead to obsession with particular causes and feeling action needs to be taken. Understanding of tge bigger issues is often lost.

Neither would I and that's a big shift from when I was at uni in the 80's and we were all about equality regardless of race/religion/ethnicity etc.

Oh, I remember going along to my university J Soc for a Friday Night Meal, a lot of us got invited by people in our Halls or on our course. It was lovely! Completely relaxed atmosphere

Livingonbananabread · Yesterday 08:11

It makes me actually want to wear a Star of David as a show of solidarity, though that would be a bit odd as a practising Christian. So appalled by the relentless level of violence and abuse faced by the Jewish community, and the normalisation among people horrified by all other forms of racism of antisemitic language. Or the extent to which ‘Zionist’ has become a dirty word, and if you pick people up on why they think it’s so abhorrent to believe Israel has a right to exist they look at you as if you’ve got two heads.

Indeed the hatred directed at the Jewish community from some students is visible, but they think their 'cause' is all important and ignore the knock on effect of their obsession with the 'cause'.

I've been on the receiving end of university students marching, they are like a pack, chanting their mantras, , banging their drums, screaming if you are not for them, you're on 'the wrong side of history' the emotional language to soneone with mental health issues is compelling. Take action, take action, do something.... on and on

@Livingonbananabread I was thinking the same. I wear a cross, so I was thinking of combining them. I hear what you say about Zionism, it's been allowed to be a word on a par with racism and apartheid. (I've seen both those banners).

I hope this tide of hatred can be turned back.

It's changed, friends children, that have attended, said it's the all encompassing 'cause'. No other cause captures them to this extent. Some really nasty comments directed towards totally innocent Jewish people, they don't see or hear themselves, and how they sound to others though. Its a form of radicalisation. Watch people's faces as the drum banging, chanting marches walk by.

This attack is just awful. My heart goes out to the Jewish community who should be able to go about their lives without fear of being attacked because they are openly Jewish. I am disgusted by the lack of support they receive from the Government and all political parties who should be doing a lot more to stamp out antisemitism and vocal of their support of the Jewish communities. As a country we should be outraged this is happening.

The government don’t care at all about the Jewish community, not enough votes in it for them, plus it’s not the trendy, virtue signalling ‘side’ to be on.
