Trump is desperate. How can he resolve the Iran shitshow?

He is flailing, desperate and increasingly unhinged. Weakening the USA, alienating allies and strengthening the enemies of democracy with every step.

How can he fix this?
Can he fix it at all?

😂
I should paste it on a note so it's close at hand. I forgot to include it in my last post!

Despite no doubt benefitting from nepotism, Jared Kushner is also hardly "Joe public". He was a senior advisor in Trump's first administration from 2017 to 2021.

Kushner was the primary Trump administration participant for the Middle East Peace Process, authoring the Trump peace plan and facilitating the talks that led to the signing of the Abraham Accords and other normalization agreements between Israel and various Arab states in 2020.

In 2025, Kushner returned to an informal advisory role in the second Trump administration, serving, along with Steve Witkoff, as a key intermediary in diplomatic negotiations regarding the Gaza war and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In 2026, he was officially appointed as a Special Envoy for Peace.

You've highlighted the nepotism piece not how it can happen, he hasn't been elected by the American public to represent them so is effectively joe public. My question is more about how it can happen because I'm not sure it can in the Democratic systems I'm familiar with but I'll stand corrected on that.
I know there are non elected government advisors and of course civil servants who negotiate on behalf of whatever government is in power but this seems different to that.

1.Steve Witkoff (born ~1958) is an American billionaire real estate developer and investor, appointed by Donald Trump as a special envoy to the Middle East and to lead peace talks on Ukraine. A longtime friend and business partner of Trump, Witkoff has a background in law and real estate, with over 30 years of experience building, buying, and managing properties

2 Before politics, Kushner was a real estate developer in New York City, taking over as CEO of Kushner Companies after his father was imprisoned for illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering.

(Copied and pasted from Wikipedia)

No experience with diplomatic relations, human rights, political engagements etc. the boardroom is very different to the states room.

logicisall · 10/04/2026 17:34

Nothing you have quoted explains Kushner's qualification for his appointments by Trump. It just states his roles. A bit similar to when Ivanka was appointed a senior advisor in her father's government with no relevant qualifications.
Kushner is a random with connections.

His Wikipedia page shows that he is not just "Joe public" when it comes to his suitability to be present at these type of negotiations.

He does have a lot of experience at negotiating now and has enjoyed some success in getting deals signed re the Abraham Accords and Gaza ceasefire.

DuncinToffee · 10/04/2026 17:42

Trump latest

Trump to the NY Post: “We’re loading up the ships with the best ammunition, the best weapons ever made.

“If we don’t have a deal, we will be using them — and we will be using them very effectively.”

Trump is desperate. How can he resolve the Iran shitshow?

I don't know how it can happen only that it does happen in the US system as evidenced by Kushner's career.

I do think by this stage he has some good experience of successfully helping to negotiate peace deals though, despite the earlier nepotism.

Definitely don't agree with that. His motivation for being there is completely at odds to the motivation of negotiators who work in diplomacy and have years of experience in it. What peace deals has he been successful with?

I think the "Gaza Ceasefire" cannot be included as a success considering since it started 730 people have been killed and Israel has bombed Gaza on 36 out of the last 40 days.

Agree he's there to do Trump's bidding and stockpile real estate.
Coincidentally they've just been discussing this on the radio. The expert on (sorry didn't get his name) said that what he has going for him is that Trump trusts him so he's confident in his negotiations but is severely lacking in an understanding of the history of the region which could be a serious issue with negotiations and diplomacy. We shall see.

Agree.
His conflict of interest with Saudi and the billions they have invested in his firm is huge.

Theolittle · 10/04/2026 18:39

The problem is that Trump has sacked anyone who might have any intelligence and try to rein him in, and surrounded himself with sycophantic yes men.

One of mine was deleted too. I have no idea why they were deleted, and I had even replied to one of them! Are posts deleted if someone reports it?
My opinion, if this is what happened, is that any debate on Politics involves strong differences of opinion and beliefs, on what could be emotive subjects.
If we have to pussyfoot around expressing ourselves on any subject, then the debate is the lesser for it.
This does not mean that I condone bullying or name calling.
What might be unique to this thread is that some posters, and I include myself in this, feel the genuine need to add a disclaimer because we know that posters have form on other threads, of being quick to fling out the accusation that if you don't agree with what Israel and Trump are doing, then you must be a supporter of the IRGC/Hamas/terrorists/<insert your noun of choice>

Boolabus · 10/04/2026 21:53

Yes looks like it was the disclaimers no idea what mumsnet guidelines they were meant to be breaking, it had unfortunately become necessary to stop constant accusations that people were supportive of the Iranian regime if they disagreed on something. It is those accusations that stifle debate and consistently insult posters. The cynic in me thinks it is certain posters way of trying to shut people up when things don't go their way
@logicisall you can report posts and they are deleted if they break talk guidelines.

Iranian state media has reported that Iran's negotiation delegation has arrived in Islamabad ahead of this weekend's peace talks with the US.

Iran state TV’s Telegram channel said the delegation is headed by Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Iranian Parliament Speaker.

He is reportedly accompanied by Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Secretary of the Defence Council, Abdolnaser Hemmati, Governor of the Central Bank, as well as several members of the Iranian parliament.

BBC reports

DuncinToffee · 10/04/2026 21:59

Israel and Lebanon will start talks on Tuesday in Washington to discuss a ceasefire in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, according to a statement from the Lebanese president's office.

The US will mediate the conversation.
