Conflict in the Middle East

Are people still rejoicing about Iran?

When Israel and the US took out Khamenei there was a thread on how great it was. Some of us expressed that it may not end well, given how forced regime change went previously in many countries. We were told to stop "leftsplaining" to Iranians. How do those people think it's going so far?

Just looking for an answer. Has Isreal defeated Hamas and Hezbollah ?

You’re advocating they go for them, you must think they can.

I am advocating no such thing, I am asking Isreal has defeated Hamas and Hezbollah ?

Have they ?

So deal with the proxies. It's not as if Iran can ship missiles 1000 miles to them.

Here you go @RedTagAlan

‘So deal with the proxies.’

And I was replying to this :

"Iran had attacked Israel through their proxies, Hamas & Hezbollah."

So yeah, the suggestion was to deal with the proxies, rather than Iran.

Let me rephrase.. Have they delt with the proxies ?

I missed that step. Then we progress to " who won", Or it could be "is it settled" or whatever.

So what was the outcome with the proxies ?

You suggested dealing with the proxies @RedTagAlan but that brings as much condemnation as the Iran war so not the best suggestion.

There appears to be reluctance to say if the proxies have been "dealt" with.

Either defeated in war, negotiated settlement , UN peacekeepers etc .

Why the reluctance to answer that ?

I know its a bit of a side point, but why can't you spell Israel? Youre clearly interested in matters regarding Israel. You must have read the word thousands of times. Is it something you do on purpose? To what end?

I had no idea it was spelt wrong. It was not red with the spell checker.

Isreal

Israel

Try it on yours. Neither show up red.

Ishral

That does underline in red.

I dont need to check- it I know how to spell it. Weirdly it seems only one side of these debates have problems spelling it- always the same misspelling. I wonder if its intentional and what it means? Nevermind- onwards!

Boolabus · 20/03/2026 11:11

@RedTagAlan what @dairydebris is insinuating is that you have spelt it wrong intentionally because you are questioning the status of Israel by spelling it Is-real instead. But you are correct in that spell check does not correct it so you can miss it. I have spelt about 6 words incorrectly as I type this message but I can see they are wrong because of the red line underneath and I will therefore of course correct them, as I am sure you would have done with your spelling of Israel if you had noticed it.

What side of the debate do you mean ? Pro war ? Anti war ?

Are you suggesting that a simple spelling/ typo mistake indicates antisemitism?

I got two red underlines on that one sentence alone. Try it on your device. Israel Isreal .I get no red. Iran Irun . I get no red there either.

Chyna China, no red.

Is your device the same ?

I wondered why some posts spelt it that way.

Notonthestairs · 20/03/2026 11:19

The point is obviously to suggest antisemitism and thus devalue any questions you might raise regarding the war in Iran.

Yup. Of course I would click on the red and correct it.

I have no idea why @dairydebris won't check it for themselves.

The spell check can be awkward here though because it does appear to be American English.

Defense

Defence

Yup. One of them was red. I don't know how to change it.

Edit to add. Change the dictionary I mean.

Has bombing worked at all ?

This is what Iran does to it's young people who protest against the regime. Tortured and then executed. Champion athlete executed after torture.

Yes, we know all the horrors. So does Saudi Arabia btw, which has executed some 400 people this year and is best mates with Trump.

The question is if raining down destruction from the sky helps remove the evil regime. Doesn't seem like it.

I don't know why the people were executed in Saudi, do you?

I do know these 3 young people were executed in Iran for protesting the regime. The thread is about Iran. Is that a problem to you? Thousands have been slaughtered in Iran and I appreciate to many, it's 'business as usual' and nothing to see here. When thousands were killed in Gaza it was a problem. Why is it not a problem when thousands are killed in Iran? I personally feel people being killed for merely protesting a problem, naturally you might not.

It's not business as usual to me and it is a tragedy, not just a problem.
I fail to see how the problem is improved by bombing Tehran or causing a global economic collapse.

So far it doesn't seem like it. Let's hope it weakens it at least so that maybe the people there, who deserve better will get better. Are you gleeful that it doesn't seem to be helping get rid of the regime? Any suggestions that haven't been tried already to get rid of the regime or perhaps we should just take our eyes off the middle east as a whole, that's ALL OF IT, not just the countries that are of no interest to some. Let them all get on with it? Would that be better?

Now we are in the third week of the war and now that even Iranian political prisoners and activists have spoken against the war, calling people doubtful about the effectiveness of bombing " gleeful" is a straw man. Nobody 's falling for that any more. Or for that old chestnut " Don't you care about Iranian women"?" If you do, you must support carpet bombing!".

The IRGC sound brutal. I’m not sure how people can get out from under them with the oppression imposed on them.

Iranian political prisoners and activists have spoken against the war

What, all of them? Or could it be that they all have different opinions, just like people everywhere else?

They definitely have different opinions. I expect you wouldn't rush to call them " gleeful" though.
It's very reductionist to call anyone against war " gleeful" and to insinuate that they support the regime.

EasternStandard · 20/03/2026 13:38

I agree. They are much worse and have a stronger hold on power than I think many realised. The army is strong and kills dissenters. It's quite alien to people living in democracies the way they behave to their own citizens.

The thing is, leave well alone, turn the other way when they slaughter thousands for merely protesting, let them continue to enrich and develop nuclear capabilities further and further and then deal with them or take action now.

I think Trump is a buffoon and the way this war was started without the support of his assumed 'allies' and the apparent unpreparedness for the attacks on the ships passing (The Houthis have done that on and off for years, usually in support of Hamas). The way he is attempting to bully other countries to join is also ridicuous.

I don't think the way Iran has struck out at neighbouring countries who are not at war with them could have been predicted. The Middle Eastern countries are upset and annoyed at Iran's actions and blame IRAN and not Israel and the US interestingly.
