I wonder how many pro pals are.utterly confused realising Hamas and the Iranian aren't nice people.

The Iranians I know are all very nice people. And I know many.

I don't think anyone is suggesting Iranians aren't nice people. It's the current Iranian leadership who aren't nice people.

Craftysue · 11/01/2026 21:45

Very concerning especially with the news blackout. They are incredibly brave people and I hope they get the freedom they deserve.

SharonEllis · 11/01/2026 21:40

So you dont think there is a difference?

I will look into it. To be honest, it might pass me by. I have lived in the ME since I was 4. I am a long, long time over 4 now. I don’t see things necessarily from a western point of view. I am not English, I’m not even sure if English is my 2nd or 3rd language. We all view the world differently, I think. That’s natural, depending on where we were born in to. I’m not trying to upset anyone. Just suggesting that different nationalities might view the current situation in a different light.

The silence is deafening to some of us because we notice who isn't commenting on Iran who are normally very vocal in their opinion on "oppressors".

You are one of the few pro Pals I have seen on MN to express an opinion on the Iranian uprising so far and I note that we support the same side and want the same things on this issue. My view is that I would like Iran to get rid of the Ayatollah too and agree that the ex-Sha's son would most likely be a puppet head of state so not sure if he is the answer long term. Though surely any change must be better than what the people of Iran currently have to tolerate.

Great post @Twiglets1

Your posts make no sense. First you say you know the difference because you've lived in the ME but couldnt remember how long. Now you remember you've been there since you were 4, and presumably know how old you are now, but somehow living there so long explains why you actually don't know the difference.

nigelisalier · 11/01/2026 21:58

I moved to the ME when I was 4. I don’t think I have ever known the distinction between a muslim and an islamist. I go about my life knowing I live in a Muslim country. Seems normal to me.

As I said, one of the kids I have known since the age of 4 is Iranian. She comes and stays every year on holiday. She isn’t sure what’s best. How on earth are any of us going to know what’s best? Everything crossed for the best outcome for Iran.

Yeah Right.

Are the women around you walking around showing the whole of their faces and arms
are they free to work and drive and have careers
are they free to express opinions that differ from the men in their families

Indeed.

Well yes. I work in a university. If they don’t want to cover their hair then they don’t. None of them cover their faces. Yes to careers, and yes to driving cars, although badly. No to arms, although they can do if they want.

Some of your points are very old school to be honest.

Obviously the current regime is not for the best because it is an extreme islamist theocratic authoritarian regime that has brutalised its people for decades. You really need to look up 'islamist'. My Iranian friends don't find it hard at all to say that getting rid of complete sharia law, the power of the ayatollahs, disbanding the IRGC, and stopping funding external terrorist groups and getting the economy back on track, would all be better than the state of play now.

Burning the mosques is so bad. That shouldn’t be encouraged

Many Persians are not Muslim.
The mosques are where punishments and beatings and executions were carried out.
Its like burning prisons.

You don't seem very curious or knowledgeable about the lives of people in Islamist regimes.

I might also suggest that saying women drive cars badly (compared to men?) is a bit 'old school'.

nigelisalier · 11/01/2026 22:26

Well I live in a Muslim country. It was maybe what other people considered extreme in the ‘70’s. I was a child. Grew up with it. I am very aware not to piss anyone off. But that to me seems completely normal. I am living outside of my own country, and thereby live by the rules. It’s been a long time. I don’t find it difficult.

Tousi TV has recent footage, Mayer Tousi is a British guy with Iranian parents who's father is in Tehran, he reports from a pro- return of the Monarchy/pro Israeal position but has daily footage sent through starlink from friends on the ground.

I can’t tell you how many times I have been in class and the kids have moaned that they have been picked up by the police for driving without a licence.
