Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has blamed the US and Israel for the unrest.

"They have trained certain individuals inside the country and abroad, brought terrorists into the country from outside, set mosques on fire, and attacked markets and guilds in Rasht, setting the bazaar ablaze," he said without providing evidence.

As protests intensify, the number of deaths and injuries recorded by human rights monitors continues to rise.

Footage authenticated by BBC Persian and BBC Verify shows security officers shooting at gatherings of protesters in Tehran, in the western Kermanshah province and the southern Bushehr region.

Multiple verified videos filmed in the centre of the western city of Ilam last weekend show security forces firing shots towards Imam Khomeini Hospital, where a group of protesters had been holding a rally.

Staff at several hospitals have since told the BBC they have been overwhelmed with the injured and dead.

BBC Persian has verified that 70 bodies brought to one hospital in the city of Rasht on Friday night, while a health worker reported around 38 people dying at a Tehran hospital.

Sources inside Iran have told BBC Persian that plain-clothes officers have been targeting people filming and on their own at the protests.

Iran's police chief said on state TV that the level of confrontation with protesters had been stepped up, with arrests on Saturday night of what he called "key figures". He blamed a "significant proportion of fatalities" on "trained and directed individuals", not security forces, but did not give specific details.

More than 2,500 people have been arrested since protests began on 28 December, according to a human rights group.

The BBC and most other international news organisations are unable to report from inside Iran, and the Iranian government has imposed an internet shutdown since Thursday, making obtaining and verifying information difficult.

Never take any responsibility for what the leaders have done to their own country though

Everyone should be rooting for the people of Iran to overthrow their authoritarian leadership, regardless of their stance on other conflicts

I agree. Those brave unarmed Iranians facing the brutal revolutionary guards. However, they, the protesters, may have a hard time of it as dictators tend to make sure their henchman are very well armed and ready for such a situation as this.
It’s such an awful regime - I am also surprised at the silence from some quarters and people who aren’t usually worried about making their voices heard.
What does Greta Thunberg think, I wonder?

(I was also very impressed at the agility of the protester who climbed up the front Embassy onto the balcony and replaced the flag.)

Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, has also weighed in on the potential toppling of Iran's government.

He says the "Persian culture of education, art, music and strength" could return if "46 years of hateful and incompetent rule" is ended.

He also suggested that it could also spell "the end" of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.

Oh Greta🙄

She's probably confused about which side she should be supporting.

Iran funds Hamas and Hezbollah.

If Iran became secular that is the absolute opposite of "globalise the Intafada"

The ProPals will have to find a new grift

Very sad, beautiful girl.

All the hundreds of deaths are tragic ... just for protesting!

mids2019 · 11/01/2026 18:09

I wonder how many pro pals are.utterly confused realising Hamas and the Iranian aren't nice people.

Will Greta be standing in solidarity with the youth of Iran? Where are the hunger strikers? Where are thr calls to ban Iran from international sport? Where are the demands for the Iranian regime to be charged with war crimes?

🥲 where is everyone opposing this? Very stark

Krickets and tumble weed from the usually very vocal ‘humanitarian’ friends on my socials.

mumandmumber · 11/01/2026 18:20

In the words of Elica Le Bon (follow her if you don’t already, British Iranian Attorney based in the states - so smart) this is a “Moral Dilemma” for the “humanitarians” of recent years.

About time they exercised their brains.

SharonEllis · 11/01/2026 18:27

I genuinely don't care what baby Greta thinks. The Iranians are suffering enough without these insufferable virtue signallers. So glad to see their moral shallowness exposed though.

I hope that Israel and the USA are already moving to support the overthrow of the Iranian regime. If they were not already involved, then they ought to get started, because this could be the best opportunity ever to end that regime.

The problem is the level of censure would hit hard.

So many dislike the US, and are anti west even when enjoying a western lifestyle that they’d prefer to see Iranians fail.

Hence the silence from many. It’s so sad. There’s an image of the beautiful student that’s just too much.

Apart from supporters of these groups, its a win win win

In the UK many of our Islamic fans are Pakistani origin.

If you look at the dominos, if Iran stops being a theocracy, suddenly the buffer keeping Iran and Pakistan isolated collapses

How did we get to that? It’s so odd

nigelisalier · 11/01/2026 19:45

I’m not sure if the silence is necessarily deafening. I would like Iran to get rid of the Ayatollah. However, I am not sure if putting in the ex-Sha’s son will be the right move for the Iranians. He will most likely be a puppet head of state controlled by America. A revolution is a big thing. I hope the Iranians push on through and get the future they deserve. Their history and culture is phenomenal.
