Hmm. I see it as a figurative and angry response from a government to someone with doubtful motives in attacking a nation that has been waging war against an existential threat - wider than Hamas - and that the nation has had enough of the UN bullshit.

I don’t recall Trump ever talking about witches. I suppose he might have done.

That's a fair assessment. Personally though, I would expect my leader to be a bit more professional than throwing the proverbial diplomatic dummy out of the pram. You're right. I don't recall Trump attacking witches but you never know, there's still time. I was talking about his other ridiculous attacks on people like the disabled reporter he publicly ridiculed.

'Witch' is sexist. Dannon should instead have pointed out that Albanese is an Assad apologist who has previously claimed Jews control American politics. She's vile, hopelessly compromised and we have plenty of gender neutral terms we can use to point that out.

Everexpanding · 01/11/2025 17:47

@Twiglets1 as @Thedawnchorus has very patiently and repeatedly explained

”A national permanent representative to the UN speaks on behalf of their state, not as an individual. As the official representative, they act as the head of their country's Permanent Mission and convey the government's position on matters of international relations. “

if you read reports from international forums they will say France said this, or the Uk said that. When reps attend official meetings of international fora they are speaking on behalf of the state they represent
you can choose not to believe this but it is the case.
You also can blindly accept the use of frankly deranged language if you choose.

personally I very much admire Francesca Albanese, I think she is very courageous in continuing her work under the pressure she has been put under

Those in leadership roles within Israel should distance themselves from his comments if they disagree with them. I doubt they all agree with the bizarre nature of his speech but silence is also a signal.

I thought it was obviously figurative and a metaphor- I would seriously doubt the ambassador meant Albanese is literally a witch with magic powers.

The point is that is the ambassador chose to use an insults with in built misogyny as a response to an official UN report.

It uses “enduring stereotypes about women’s mental instability and irrationality. It is embedded in the history of labelling women who pose any perceived threat to men’s power as unhinged or evil.”

NikkiPotnick · 01/11/2025 17:54

I don't think it makes much difference that it's the UN really, they're institutionally sexist themselves. He shouldn't be using a misogynistic term like witch for a woman in any context.

Agreed.

Twiglets1 · 01/11/2025 17:59

Agreed.

And that still would not have been appropriate response to refute a UN report.

What in the report did he actually refute?

These Jewish organisations support her

As Jewish organizations and groups, we express our support for Francesca Albanese, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories occupied since 1967.

Ms. Albanese has been under relentless attack from politically motivated organizations like ‘UN Watch’, which have been waging toxic smear campaigns to silence her and to harm her human rights mandate. Those organizations have one objective: shielding the Israeli government from international criticism and legal accountability.

Regrettably, representatives of some Western governments have been giving a strong tailwind to these smear campaigns, by accusing Ms. Albanese of antisemitism. We reject such allegations, which are unfounded and recklessly incite against Ms. Albanese, at the risk of endangering her personal safety.

Speaking out in defence of more than two million civilians in Gaza whose lives are existentially threatened, including by deliberate starvation, Ms. Albanese has been denouncing the political collusion and military complicity of Western governments in Israel’s annihilation of Gaza. Instead of stopping Israel’s war crimes, some of those governments are attempting to silence the messenger.

Thing is, if you think this is about playing the woman not the ball, the UN don't actually have to pick someone with a history of anti-Semitic tropes for this role, do they?

I am genuinely interested- please give specifics that demonstrate her antisemitism versus legitimate concerns about Israel.

She said that the US is subjugated by the Jewish lobby. There's no way to make that not anti-Semitic.

Here you go. Only an antisemite would post such an image, in this manner.

Denying the obvious antisemitism of 7 October "The victims of 7/10 were not killed because of their Judaism but in response to Israel's oppression".

Lots of examples of Holocaust inversion.

What you said @MissyB1 here wasn't antisemitic. Money does talk especially in US politics. The Jewish lobby has money and influence as do many other groups in the US.

The antisemitic ( and stupid ) bit was saying that the US is 'subjugated'. Implying there is Jewish people in the background controlling everything. Its a trope. Surely you can see that?

And yet she chose to say something quite different to what you've said here. I agree that a discussion about the impact of lobbying per se wouldn't be anti-Semitic, but then that's got about as much to do with what Albanese actually came out with as it does with the price of fish.

What's your opinion of Paul Findley, a US congressman from Illinois, who wrote the book "They dare to speak out", published in 1985 and held 9 weeks in the Washington Post as the best seller.

Well because you're saying anyone who opposes AIPAC's and other similar lobbies influence in US politics is antisemitic.

On the first post of yours I responded to or are you going to get specific about the word subjugated which I suspected you will which is why I directed you to the book I mentioned.

So, no I didn't say it. And I have never heard of the book.
