Lush, what is the point?!

Gloriia · 03/09/2025 14:55

Lush closing stores for 24hr 'in solidarity of Gaza'.

What a ridiculous empty gesture.

Surely a better idea would be to stay open for 24 hrs and donate all extra income to a Gazan charity, or close but all staff to attend an intifada with flasks and placards <'free palestine' naturally, do not mentions the hostages!>

I quite liked Lush I'll ensure to shop elsewhere going forward.

Personally I’d think it obvious that starving an entire population is disgusting
These days it seems some need reminding

You can't be serious. We are talking about the ludicrousness of Lush. We have been talking about Gaza long before their stunt.

I’m not sure why you object so strongly. Their action is not harming anyone and is indicating concern about the genocide. It’s not just Lush anyway, it’s part of a global ‘strike’ to indicate a worldwide horror about civilians being deliberately starved to death.

Hairshare · 05/09/2025 11:30

DrPrunesqualer · 05/09/2025 10:59

Exactly

Hear hear . STOP STARVING GAZA is what matters, not niggling about how the message is expressed. It’s almost as though OP and a couple of other posters are speaking on behalf of the Israeli government.

Yes we can only hope hamas have taken note of Lush's day off and signs and stop looting all the aid.

Do you think Lush are doing a 'free the hostages' sign? Or, maybe another shop should shut for a day to fix that horrific situation. Perhaps Clinton's cards are next up for a day off.

Personally I think Lush can support whoever they like ( as I’ve already said on this thread ) and as we can see from a pp they support a lot of good causes

I had no idea they did so much good. 👍

Actially I think it is harmful. As this discussion shows it debases the level of public debate and prioritises fatuous virtue signalling over the hard work of getting things done.

PinkBobby · 05/09/2025 08:36

Their fundraising is much broader than just watermelon soap. Their ‘Charity Pot’ (hand cream, I think), for example, raised millions and was split between causes across the globe. They have worked with Palestinian charities (seed banks and settler violence support) before the war so their interest in Palestinians suffering predates the war. They’re not jumping on some bandwagon - not everyone was clueless about the region pre 7/10.

For anyone interested: in 20/21 Charity Pot donated funds in the following way:

  • 23% donated in the animal protection sector;
  • 54% donated in the human rights sectors;
  • 23% donated in the environmental sector.
  • 10% of all Charity Pot donations in the 2020-2021 Financial Year went to organisations working with Migrants, Refugees and Displaced Peoples, and toward organisations working against Trafficking and Slavery.
  • 6% of all Charity Pot donations went toward Animal Sanctuaries and Animal Rehoming.
  • 5% of all donations went toward the Climate Change sector.
  • 5% of all donations went toward organisations working toward Anti-Racism.
  • 4% of all donations went toward organisations supporting, and campaigning for the rights of, LGBTQIA+ peoples.

If none of these causes connect with you,
don’t shop at LUSH. It’s simple.

Wouldn’t you agree their fundraising millions is ‘getting things done’ as best as a soap shop can? I doubt they’ll be invited to Qatar to help with diplomacy or join the IDF to take out Hamas. But at least they’re doing something to help innocent people in a war zone - namely fundraising and raising awareness which I assume they hope will link back to fundraising.

Yes their donations are great and very admirable.

Closing a shop for a day and giving all their staff a lazy day off is not usually the way to raise awareness about a situation that is already constantly in the news. But yayy 3 cheers for more days off Lush!

As I said above, it might get more people to buy the soap which means more money to worthy causes… and based on this tiny forum, some more soap is going to be bought because of them closing. So maybe there are better ways to go about it but they’re trying to help.

It gets them publicity to help raise their lagging sales figures by appealing to a potentially new group of consumers.

PinkBobby · 03/09/2025 15:05

It’s not entirely empty - if you read the details it is specifically re the aid situation in Gaza and it is to pressure the uk govt: it means the UK govt is missing out on tax from them for being closed for a day. A small gesture but not empty. They’ve also already raised a lot of money for a mental health charity for children in Gaza with their watermelon soap which is coming back to raise further funds for children who have lost limbs. Even if you disagree with closing for a day, perhaps you could pop in and buy some soap to support a worthy cause?

Given they've made massive losses in the last year or so, perhaps it will save the government money, or make them more due to their increased sales to Gaza/Hamas supporters?

usernamealreadytaken · 05/09/2025 12:11

GladioliGreen · 03/09/2025 15:07

I think its a great gesture of solidarity and any thing that brings the starvation of Gaza into the headlines is a good thing.

The watermelon soap has quickly become one of their best selling products, 100% of the profits are being donated solely to projects providing urgently-needed professional mental health support, trauma counselling and art and play therapies for children in Gaza and the West Bank.

Israel need to stop starving Gaza.

Given their slump in profits, perhaps the watermelon soap is a loss-leader to get people through the door, with no substantial profit at all, just publicity?

It's a strange one because we are constantly told on here that no one wants to see children starve yet like clockwork everytime someone speaks out against it up pop the same names ready to criticise.

Yes - I can picture all those Hamas supporters popping in to buy soap for children who have lost limbs. Terrorists are known for their delight in scented soap and charity. i hope there’s an expose soon re how LUSH helped Hamas with systemic aid looting (that no one else can find evidence of)

'The same names' don't want anyone to starve. I'm particularly concerned about skeletal hostages. Do Lush mean feed the hostages do you think?

A day off for Lush staff will not help civilians suffering in war zones.

Have you read any articles associated with this at all? Lush aren't feeding anyone. That's the whole point of why they went about things the way they did. They would much rather send food into Gaza but they can't because of Israels restrictions.

So I assume your concern for the hostages means you’re anti the current violence in Gaza City?

And a day off got people talking, it got some people buying and therefore means more money to people suffering.

Are you in favour of banning arms exports and sanctions in Israel?

A handful of posters talking. A brief mentiom on news programmes.

It's great that they are activists. Their pr staff just need to use common sense and try to be a bit more useful stunt wise.

Contact them then! I’m sure they’re always looking for new ways to fundraise. You could even volunteer for the 24/48hr soap sale!

So we can only discuss issues on here if we have been in direct contact with the company in question to volunteer? I had no idea.
