Conflict in the Middle East

Lush, what is the point?!

Lush closing stores for 24hr 'in solidarity of Gaza'.

What a ridiculous empty gesture.

Surely a better idea would be to stay open for 24 hrs and donate all extra income to a Gazan charity, or close but all staff to attend an intifada with flasks and placards <'free palestine' naturally, do not mentions the hostages!>

I quite liked Lush I'll ensure to shop elsewhere going forward.

Totally agree.

Have they made any free the hostages soap, end the conflict shower gel? Perhaps there's a new range they were planning on their day off.

I don’t understand. You just said you tried to go to Lush yesterday to buy the watermelon soap.
Now you’ve decided that apparent effort yesterday wasn’t intended as you don’t agree with it

Just so your thread is not a complete and utter waste of internet, here is the link to purchase the fundraising soap for any other posters who may want to buy it:

www.lush.com/uk/en/p/watermelon-slice-soap?queryId=5462953bef47e26c1480960ce9d579ae

Thanks for posting the link in how to order the watermelon soap online.

Buying for Christmas so an excellent stocking filler

My local store is closed today (was working anyway) but I'm town at the weekend. Id like to buy in store to show my support but can buy online too.
Thanks for the link @Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot

Hamas have vast amounts of money invested in the stockmarket, maybe they could donate some of it to help the Palestinian situation.
My source for this is a BBC Panorama documentary shown last year. Think it's still on the IPlayer.

Having a day off should not be applauded. People are suffering in gaza I doubt they'd be applauding shop staff having a day off.

They should have done something constructive, a marathon opening and donating income. This is such absolutely privileged nonsense. Oh the hardship the Lush staff are enduring!

And yet everyone is talking about it. A demographic of young girls that otherwise might not. Brilliant.

Any free the hostages soap yet?

As Tesco says Every little helps.

Saw Hugh Bonneville interviewed speaking about Palestine also.

Every little helps.

P.S @OhMaria2 we were chatting about it in my staffroom today.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 04/09/2025 19:58

It is utterly pointless.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 04/09/2025 19:59

Not that I care one bit as I no longer shop there.

Yes, that was enlightening, apparently they own a lot of real estate in Turkey. Good to see the aid in action, I hope Lush can make sure donations get to those who need it.

Any hostages aren't an excuse to bomb multiple hospitals and ambulances and starve children and shoot people running for aid soap?
People are talking about it, and it will lead to talking about the above.

Terrorists aren’t renowned for their charity, I’m afraid.

Unfortunately sending money has limited value in a country where children and adults are literally starving to death because there is nowhere near enough food available, and people are shot at when they approach the aid stations.
Closing shops and losing revenue means that the UK government receives less in taxes, which hopefully they will take note of and consider what we can do as a country to help stop the genocide.
A lot of companies are joining in this initiative, it's not just Lush.

I don't think uou really understand the government's tax take. The tax income on a day's trading at Lush is minuscle. The government will not bat an eyelid Just because they shut the shop doesn't mean they lost a day's income. People just have shopped on a different day.

40andlovelife · 04/09/2025 22:47

It’s performative, self indulgent, look at me, Facebook black box, checking in for my covid jab, taking the knee shite .

PollyBell · 04/09/2025 23:04

Arent they the same place that did some weird police protest thing a few years ago, I presume they dont report shoplifters or staff stealing from them?

DrPrunesqualer · 05/09/2025 00:10

Just amazed at how a business that raises awareness for the plight of people in Gaza can get so much vitriol on mumsnet

other than advertising for Lushand people ticking a box on 'I have done something' how is this actually helping the people of Gaza are they getting more food? please explain what it is doing to help and not just making a bunch of western people feel better about themselves?

Stopsnowing · 05/09/2025 00:20

I thought the same - donate all profits for a day to Gaza.

Hardly vitriol is it? Its completely legitimate to point out that its a hollow gesture.

I guess it is something the government will notice though, and also members of the public, seeing lots of businesses close on the same day. Fundraising doesn’t help much when aid can’t be brought in and distributed so protest is vital.

Im sure it will be on the next cabinet agenda. I wasn't aware lots of businesses had closed. Which other businesses closed alongside Lush?
Anyway as it was so successful I expect there will be loads of aid going in now, which is obviously good news. I hope Hugh Bonneville doesn't try to steal the credit from Lush. Though its ok because all consciousness raising is good.

GingerBeverage · 05/09/2025 07:18

Lush have stores in Saudi Arabia.

We should be boycotting Lush then, No? Gosh, what to do?

Merrymouse · 05/09/2025 07:25

RockaLock · 03/09/2025 15:32

That makes no sense, because (unless you believe that because Lush is closed for a day, all the customers that had been planning on buying something there that day go and buy their bath bombs somewhere else instead), they are just delaying their sales to another day and will end up paying the same amount of tax.

And if the Lush customers do shop elsewhere because they can’t wait one day, well, tax will be paid on those sales elsewhere instead, so again no overall effect.

(That’s a very simplistic way of looking at things but fundamentally it is just nonsense to suggest that closing for a one-off day will make any difference to UK tax receipts or is making any kind of meaningful protest).

But then again I’ve not shopped at Lush for ages, since the breast binders nonsense, so I’m not bothered either way.

Also they will still be paying rates and employment taxes.
