Lush, what is the point?!

Lush closing stores for 24hr 'in solidarity of Gaza'.

What a ridiculous empty gesture.

Surely a better idea would be to stay open for 24 hrs and donate all extra income to a Gazan charity, or close but all staff to attend an intifada with flasks and placards <'free palestine' naturally, do not mentions the hostages!>

I quite liked Lush I'll ensure to shop elsewhere going forward.

'Yes, social media users like you posting about Lush and highlighting the starvation in Gaza.'

Ah people like us you mean as most of us do watch the news and use social media.

People are talking about Lush but for the wrong reasons though, not for their 'cause' rather what an odd thing to do give their staff a day off as if that's a hardship.

I never liked it anyway. They use way too much fragrance in their products. Im
surprised they’re still going anyway. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were on the verge of collapse and used Gaza as their excuse.

DrPrunesqualer · 04/09/2025 01:55

Shame more shops don’t do the same. Perhaps Starmer would pull his fingers out if he realised how much tax the country will be losing.

I don’t shop in lush but as they’re selling a Watermelon soap with all profits going to the Palestinians in Gaza I might pop in

so
Whats the point ?
It’s got into the news and now more people know how they can help
It’s highlighting how Israel is starving innocent people

Hardly
In 2024 their profit was £690million

They do a lot for charity and deserving causes,

With everything going on in the world, Lush closing for the day to show solidarity with starving children is despicable?!

A boycotter finds it despicable 🥴. I dare say they’ll survive

Lush is one of the few shops and one of the very few businesses that actually supports good causes with some of their profits

It’s not entirely empty - if you read the details it is specifically re the aid situation in Gaza and it is to pressure the uk govt: it means the UK govt is missing out on tax from them for being closed for a day. A small gesture but not empty. They’ve also already raised a lot of money for a mental health charity for children in Gaza with their watermelon soap which is coming back to raise further funds for children who have lost limbs. Even if you disagree with closing for a day, perhaps you could pop in and buy some soap to support a worthy cause?

Lush will lose no income and the government no tax. The people who would have shopped on Wednesday will just shop on thursday. Thr whole thing has raisef their profile and people who think its all a terribly wonderful and significant thing will probably spend more money.

Now if they closed for a day for each and every crisis in the world that might start to impact their profits & thr tax take. if they closed for the day for the Uighyurs, another day for the Ukrainian children abducted by the Russians, another for Sudan, and of course a day for the hostages held by terrorists in gaza.

Nonsense. A lot of businesses donate significant amounts to charity.

'Whats the point ? It’s got into the news and now more people know how they can help'

A very brief mention on rolling news programmes, a thread here with 33 comments. It's not exactly high profile is it.

'People know how they can help', by Lush staff having a duvet day? Well done Lush very worthy Grin.

Which I guess means more money to the worthy causes they’re supporting!

Yes that's correct so lets not fall for tbeir virtue signalling about losing income. If they really cared they would stay open and give away more. This war is dominated by concerns about optics and maintaining media space. That's what this is about.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 04/09/2025 08:30

The starvation in Gaza does not need to be highlighted by lush, I can’t imagine them doing this will shine any more light on it, it has been covered all over the place, and people are very aware.

If I was being cynical, virtue signalling in the direction of Something that people quite rightly care about enormously at the moment. Can only bring more publicity to their business, and consequently more sales.

Exactly. A publicity stunt for lush rather than something actually useful like a fundraiser.

Really not shocked at LUSH doing this. But yes, totally ludicrous!!! Pathetic, attention-seeking virtue signalling. 🙄

Lush have been problematic for years including giving out chest binders to underage girls so it's not surprised me that they're doing this

And no it's not going to help the people of Gaza at all. Netenyahu is not going to look at what Lush are doing and think "hmmm best stop dropping those bombs now eh..."

Wow chest binders to children with mental health conditions. No wonder so many are confused, also very damaging physically.

I'll avoid Lush in future.

The virtue signalling for Gaza but ignore the hundreds of thousands of deaths in other countries with conflict.

Flag waving and chanting of slogans which basically ask for the whole land river to the sea is suggesting Judea the Jewish land gir thousands of years prior to Arabs and the Muslim faith is for Palestinian people, a country that never existed.

They won't t do this, just flag waving for Gaza 🤔

Can we all just take a moment to get back to the truth. Lush didn’t give away chest binders to children with or without mental health issues. They offered them to people who paid a £7 donation to a trans charity. Basically, people could buy them for £7. There was no praying on vulnerable people or forcing views on children, it was fundraising. I don’t necessarily agree with chest binding for health reasons but no one forced me into a LUSH and attacked me with a binder. They didn’t lure my kids into corner and show them binder options. So why not just move on if a cause doesn’t suit your own views. It doesn’t have to be the end of the world.

LUSH have raised money for many important causes over the years: homeless shelters, refugee support services, hospices, care homes, women’s shelters, anti animal testing, environmental causes - plenty to feel positive about. I understand not every charity/cause may be one you want to support. some you might be actively against.
But if you don’t like what they’re trying to do, don’t buy the product. It’s that simple. We don’t all need to get up in arms about it - it’s such a waste of energy!

RaraRachael · 04/09/2025 10:46

I stopped going in there when they were associated with protests involving cutting airport fences and getting onto runways etc. Can't remember what the actual cause were they were supporting.

We’re all allowed to chose who we want to donate to
Thats not a choice others make for us

Judging by the lineup of mumsnetters on this thread lambasting Lush for giving support to the starving people of Gaza
Its clear why they are against them

same old same old 🥱

Dizzybob · 04/09/2025 12:13

I hope the staff still got paid.

StickyProblem · 04/09/2025 12:15

Presumably the staff won’t get paid when the shops and factories are shut? Haven’t seen this mentioned on the news reports.

JacknDiane · 04/09/2025 12:24

Thanks for bringing this to my attention @Gloriia.

I'll be buying the watermelon soap now and making sure to support Lush from now on.

Hello Lush PR rep. So you think a few cents of tax to the UK government is going to help the situation in Gaza? Would it not be better to donate the cost of the soap directly to Gaza relief? Nobody over 14 wants those godawful stinky soaps and lotions anyway.

Yup. It's not about what they are doing it's who they are doing it for that people have a problem with.
