Why don't Hamas just release all the hostages?

First time wading in here but reading this morning's developments, it says Hamas have offered to release 9 hostages in exchange for a 60 day truce and some prisoners.

Why not release all hostages to end the war?

What's in it for them to prolong this? They are clearly not going to 'beat' Israel.

OP posts:

Think the WSJ published an article today citing Hamas communications about the aim of all of this being to stop a Saudi Israel normalisation agreement. So many dead, both Gazans and Israelis for this.

OP I think it’s because it’s the last bit if leverage they have. They are asking for their families to be able to leave Gaza as part of a deal. No shits given for the other Gazans. They are also facing anti-hamas protests and have been executing Gazan protesters, shooting people in the legs and harassing Gazan journalists. I think a video of a senior Hamas member saying it’s all good because houses can be rebuilt and more “martyrs” (read civilians) can be born is going around arabic speaking twitter. Again no shits given. Complete and total self interest.

The reality is the UAE is clearly saying Hamas has to go as part of a peace process (their forign minister was very clear on this). Their opportunities are narrowing and I expect the other arab nations involved in this will be pushing for a third country to take hamas members. This is a desperate last bid. The reality is Israel cannot risk leaving Hamas in Gaza 7/10 saw around 1300 people murdered, can you imagine if 1300 Brits were murdered in a terrorist attack and there were hundreds kidnapped. Could Britain realistically leave that terror group alone? Or would they be expected to dig out every last one of them?

I imagine at the end of this the UAE and Saudi will take over governance of Gaza not Israel (if theres anything left to govern tbh).

I hope this is over soon, I think it will be.

Can you name a country that spoils another’s water supply, bombs it’s airport and uses its airspace for surveillance, prevents it from having a seaport, extensively surveys it’s population without agreement? Can you name another country that actively controls how much food and other supplies goes into a country?

Legal experts have said occupy does not require military presence and you can understand why when you see how you can control population regardless of troops on the ground.

Are ‘legal experts’ applying international law when it comes to a terrorist state next door?

Is there even any law on that?

quantumbutterfly · 18/05/2025 19:04

Palestine? Do you mean Gaza and what used to be Jordan on the west bank? Or are you referring to what is recognised as Israel?

I was referring to the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

I wonder why there is a terrorist state next door.....

Oh yes because they are occupied..

Chickens and egg situation there.

So you’re saying International law protections don’t apply to children and women in Gaza, as well as the other innocent civilians?

@BreezyBertha - you think it’s ok to starve them?

Depends on your bias I guess but do tell how many Israeli suicide bombers have murdered Palestinians? Blown up nightclubs, supermarkets, buses and pizza parlours?

How many Israelis have gone into Palestinian homes and murdered whole families in their beds, almost decapitating a baby?

How many Israelis have gone on stabbing and shooting sprees against Palestinians?

Car rammings?

That was all long before Oct 7th and even Hamas governing Gaza btw.

Livelovebehappy · 18/05/2025 19:21

I think the reason is pretty obvious. The hostages Hamas claim to still have are probably already dead, or have experienced torture and abuse, which they probably want to keep under wraps for as long as possible. They treat the Palestinians like dirt, so they’re hardly going to treat the hostages better than that. They’ve already released the least damaged hostages, and now it’s going to be all downhill from here. They’re terrorists and savages, which by default makes them liars and murderers.

Nope not what I said but people spouting on about international law - was it formulated with a terrorist state in mind do you think?

Carry on projecting onto me what you want me to mean though.

And why are they doing that...

Hint: because they don't like being occupied.

TBF as a proportion of the UK population, even just of the English population those numbers of dead and abducted would be far higher. Israel has about 9 million compared to 70 million UK (58 million in England). The sadistic joy of the carnage just amplified the horror.

Ok - agreed went too far.
What I should have
I can’t imagine International Law being rewritten in back of the situation in ME. Israel is classified as an occupying nation and has legal duties towards Gazans as such, regardless of their being terrorists within the Gaza.

Imagine is UK had stopped food going into Northern Ireland to flush out the IRA?!

I know, numbers are frightening. It's like 1.8 million English people murdered in the last 18 months .

Disingenuous.

Can you name another country that requires an Iron Dome to be fully armed 100 % of the time because the nation of people on their borders send rockets in to blow up random people on the street, refer to them as dogs and frequently send terrorists across the border to murder civilians?

No. You can't. This situation is unique.

What really angers the pro-Hamas lot, is that Israel are winning, militarily.

Completely unique, where else does a citizen need one of 101 different types of permit from another country just to live and carry out daily life.

And the 'safe' rooms and bomb shelters in homes and public spaces...which turned out to be death traps in the event of a border breach.

Agree. No where. Palestinians have been living under atrocious conditions for decades because of the violence and hatred their leadership has consistently shown.
They could have accepted a Palestinian state back in 1948 and started making a future. They have successively chosen to instead try to remove all Jews from the land they believe is only theirs.
And now, they might well be up against an administration as abhorrent as they have been for decades.
Zero sum game. Total fucking tragedy. Not all Israel's fault, as many on here would have all us believe.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 18/05/2025 19:52

Yes - Israel needs an iron dome
Yes - it’s occupying Gaza and has a duty of care to it’s population.

Yes the situation is unique - doesn’t take away from Israel’s obligation.
