Can someone explain Islamophobia to me?

I don't think I have an irrational fear of Muslims, but I think I have a reasonable concern about radical Islam, does that make me Islamophobic?

Nope.
I'm an atheist and against all forms of organised religion, but I still treat those with different views respectfully. I only ask that they do the same for me.

I think Muslims need to answer this one ( and I’m Christian) but I think a fear of extremists/ radicals from any religion- is entirely understandable.
Assuming that everyone who follows a religion is an extremist is not acceptable.

Do you think atheism is extreme?

Of course not, and I'm aware that there are different strands of Islam just as there are different strands of Christianity and Judaism.

I've heard Islam called the 'religion of peace' and I'd love to know more about that because the version that gets the most 'airtime' is certainly not peaceful.

No. But the Labour government would like to make your reasonable concerns and questions a blasphemy. Not for similar questions or concerns about other religions, of course.

I don't see how; you're either an atheist or not. There's no extreme version of not believing god exists and I don't see atheists anywhere trying to impose their lack of belief onto anyone else.

Really, how so?

I've been living in the Pacific Northwest for a while now and don't keep up with British politics as much as I did when I lived there.

You are absolutely Islamophobic. Islam is the religion of peace, as evidenced the world over every day. Nothing to see here…

Yes, it's normally religious folk who attempt to impose their beliefs on others, in my experience.

Sixpence39 · 22/02/2025 20:53

What are you struggling with? Do you know what antisemitism is? It's that... but against Muslims. Hateful tropes, conspiracy theories, using the actions of one person to define a whole group, hateful assumptions, slurs, attacks... the list goes on.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/02/2025 20:50

What’s the word for a rational fear of Islam?

What’s the word for a rational fear of Islam?

Or a rational dislike of oppression of women?

Here's the definition @BaMamma.

Very good, but I've been accused of islamophobia for voicing, IMHO, quite rational concerns, not irrational fears.

What were the cconcerns and how did you express them?

I'm not sure you really understand antisemitism.

If you have to ask, you probably are recognising you hold some pretty islamophobic views. Not that you'll admit that obviously.

Zusammengebrochen · 22/02/2025 20:57

Not sure I agree - folk are often called islamophobic in an attempt to shut down constructive discussion or any criticism.

One person?

Yes, like when there's a terrorist attack carried out by a Muslim person and then people go around asking other unconnected Muslims to 'condemn it' even though it's nothing to do with them. That's taking the actions of one person and generalising it to a whole group.

BaMamma · 22/02/2025 20:58

Zusammengebrochen · 22/02/2025 20:55

I've said I object to niqabs and burqa in public spaces for reasons related to public safety and female emancipation.

Does that ever happen? I didn't see anyone asking Muslims in general to 'condemn' the attacks on October 7th.
