Did anyone see this last night? Heartbreaking and enraging in equal measure.

It’s very simple
Byrne has discredited herself as not impartial
She therefore cannot be trusted to speak about anything re impartiality

  • She has no credibility to speak on this subject.

it’s a terrible example to use.

That makes no sense. Even if Dorothy Byrne is biased in some way against Boris Johnson and the Tories - and she was rejecting accusation of bias on C4 - anti-Tory bias has nothing to do with faults in this documentary.

@Rummly
Mistranslation is a not a good look for the documentary- but the fact that there is a religious context to the war on both sides should not be a surprise. Have there been other examples of mistranslation that the Telegraph picked up on?

The surprise is surely a BBC programme mistranslated that context so badly as to be actively misleading. It's not shocking that a member of a population from a society ruled by jihadists talks about jihad.

Absolutely this. It's obvious why Delaney makes this assumption about Byrne.

She was head of news and media for 15 years at Channel 4, and editor of Dispatches and you don't think she can talk with any authority about how you should make a documentary? I mean, this is more of a reach than the people trying to say that the Hamas government official isn't really anything to do with Hamas.

It’s not about faults in the documentary it’s about a pp using What Byrne says as some sort of authority on the subject.
Shes a terrible example to quote.

It was her job, and she won a bunch of awards? She is an authority on the subject.

In your opinion. Not mine or other posters.

Rummly · 26/02/2025 21:49

This is ridiculous. One of the UK’s most experienced documentary makers is to be ignored because…a poster on MN has found some footage of her being asked about bias on C4.

See it or hide from it, do as you wish.
Its simple facts and worthy of posting to establish credibility or not in this case

It has certainly damaged your credibility.

Stop digging yourself into a hole. It doesn't make you bad to admit you are wrong. Plenty of posters do so when the correct facts are given, as in this case they have been.

Lolapusht · 26/02/2025 22:12

The fact that some posters seem to think that Israel is waging a war based on religious context against Gaza and that they have targeted journalists to silence them rather than killing members of Hamas posing as journalists is…enlightening.

I agree, it should be translated accurately. But would not say this is only a religious war for one side.

Amelek- is a term from the Hebrew bible to describe biblical enemy? Hasn’t this been used to justify death of Palestinians?

“"'You will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven,'" he added, quoting the biblical story of the nation of Amalek, whose people God commanded the Israelites to exterminate and which right-wing Israeli leaders have long invoked to justify the killing of Palestinians.”

None of this whatabouting relates to what I wrote, or to the BBCs misleading translation generally.

I am not sure if this refers to my post?
My point was there could be argued to be a religious element for both sides.
At its heart though- this conflict has been going on for decades and appears to come down to who owns the land.

It relates to the horror about the mistranslation- about not including the term jihad against Jews. It wasn’t an innocuous mistranslation- which I agree with.
The mistranslation was bad, but it shouldn’t be a surprise that there is a religious element to both sides. But religion is not the ultimate cause of the conflict for either side.

“I also followed up the story about the dodgy translation in the documentary: ‘Israelis’ for ‘Jews’. I can’t know how far that goes, but on its face it’s seriously, seriously bad. Fucking shocking actually.”
as @Rummly stated

Again, the surprise is not at the religious element. People are aware there are jihad supporters in Gaza. Anyone who affects not to be is going to be either ignoring this or deflecting, rather than posting that they're shocked. So no, it doesn't relate to what I wrote.

I don't know whether it was innocuous on the part of the BBC or not. The person or persons who did the translating are obviously up to no good, but it's possible this wasn't realised by the BBC. Obviously that would also be a problem.

We agree then- the documentary shows and can still be accurately translated.

Great to see so many people taking a stand for what they believe to be right.
Any support for innocent Palestinians leads straight to accusations of antisemitism which makes it very difficult for people to speak up.

It’s not at all difficult for people to speak up. Palestine is a cause celebre for the not-very-well-versed-in-global-affairs. People who love a bandwagon and see themselves as a crusader against ‘Western Colonialism’ (while of course living in a safe Western democracy and with zero intent of ever coming into contact with Hamas).

Yes, media figures. Actors, washed up footballers, that kind of thing. Many with Islamic backgrounds. Not people with a good grasp of global affairs and an objective viewpoint.

AnxiousRose · 26/02/2025 22:59

Right into my hands...attemps to discret anybody who has the courage to support the innocent people of Palestine.

Nobody is inherently entitled to the land under their feet.

Countries are formed according to what makes sense in terms of geography, religion, trade, shared culture and demographics. There have been many conquests over thousands of years, and countries regularly shift their borders around as things get redefined.

WW2 was a horrific time for the entire world and an awful lots of countries had to suck up the lasting damage it caused. But suck it up we must, because the only way is forwards, and hanging onto grudges does nothing but brings more misery.

noblegiraffe · 26/02/2025 23:02

The fact that they said it is racist to suggest that a member of Hamas is complicit in violence is embarrassing.
