Did anyone see this last night? Heartbreaking and enraging in equal measure.

They are still carrying out acts of terrorism on their neighbours as indeed are West Bank Palestinians on their Israeli neighbours. Enough already!

I never said they weren't though? I notice you haven't agreed that the illegal occupation of the West Bank are acts of terrorism?

I mentioned earlier in the thread last night's BBC1 documentary ( 1st part of three) Israel and Palestine, the Road to October 7th. The Guardian has given it 5 stars. I found it really helpful in putting the current conflict in context. I hope lots of the posters on this thread make the time to watch it.

Hitherzither it might be a good idea to post a separate thread about this documentary as it is in three parts and covers more of the history ?

I'm not talking about Gaza I'm talking about the West Bank, it's bizarre posts on here go on about how the Palestinians want to kill all Jews and want all the Israeli land when in actual fact its happening the other way round right before our eyes, how do you think these people are meant to protect themselves from Israeli terrorists?

By stopping attacks such as October 7?

Watching.

It’s an incredible documentary. Interviews with Tony Blair, Condoleezza Rice, Hamas leaders, Israeli politicians, diplomats - full spectrum of opinions.

So the Israeli Government will pull out of the West Bank if Hamas stop the terrorist attacks? Are you that naive?

AnxiousRose · 26/02/2025 09:32

When were we closest to peace in the region? When Yitzhak Rabin was Israeli PM.
And what happened to him? His peace initiative was radically opposed by right-wing conservatives and Likud leaders (Benjamin Netanyahu) and he was assassinated by an Israeli law student Yigal Amir in 1995.
Subsequentky Likud leader Benjamin Nettenyahu became PM and has repeatedly stated that Israel must have control from the river to the sea.

So no, Israel are not seeking peace right now. There is no moral high ground. The atrocities carried out by both sides are devastating.

Why do Israel not allow any independent observers or journalists into Gaza? Because they do not want the world to see the devestation they are causing to innocent people and so that they can claim anything coming out of Gaza is propaganda.

Polka83 · 26/02/2025 09:37

@Liv999
Netanyahu has never wanted a 2SS and the US do not appear to have been honest brokers of peace with the Palestinians. They have allowed Israel to have their demands without concessions to the Palestinians.

The majority of countries approve of a 2ss that goes back to the 1967 borders and only US vetos this within the UN.

Then you have pro-Israelis who blame Hamas when the failure of a 2SS, but the truth appears more complicated:

“Israel claims that even if the Arab states and Iran want peace, Hamas does not, and therefore threatens Israel. There are two crucial points here. First, Hamas accepted the two-state solution, already 7 years ago, in their 2017 Charter. “Hamas considers the establishment of a fully sovereign and independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital along the lines of the 4th of June 1967, with the return of the refugees and the displaced to their homes from which they were expelled, to be a formula of national consensus.” This year again, Hamas proposed to disarm in exchange for Palestinian statehood on the 1967 borders. Israel, in turn, assassinated the Hamas political chief and cease-fire negotiator, Ismail Haniyeh.”

Going back to 1967 borders maybe unrealistic - but it should be a starting point for a fair negotiation.

100%

Polka83 · 26/02/2025 09:42

The failure to develop a peaceful solution is going to risk Israel’s future in the region and is short sighted.

VisitationRights · 26/02/2025 09:49

I hope the BBC staff members responsible for green lighting/airing this piece of propaganda garbage are fired and then charged under the Terrorism Act for providing financial support to a terrorist organization. What a shambles.

Polka83 · 26/02/2025 09:55

Israel has been the largest recipient for US aid, and only aid to Israel and Egypt has not been recently stopped by Trump.

Imagine how that might change when the current youth becomes the majority voters in the US.

There is a huge divide in US support for Israel dependent on age. I would say that Israel actually has limited time to reach a peaceful resolution with its neighbours if it is going to remain dependent on US aid.

“Only 16% of adults under 30 favor the U.S. providing military aid to Israel to help in its war against Hamas, compared with 56% of those 65 and older.”

Given the bias US has shown towards Israel, I am not sure I would take Rice as independent commentators on the situation. However - I will watch this.

Wildflowers99 · 26/02/2025 11:38

No but I fully intend to

AnxiousRose · 26/02/2025 12:00

It does not need to be one side against the other.
The Jewish people in Israel have experienced trauma and suffering, Hamas have performed horrific acts of terror and I have no doubt that Jews across the world do face antisemitism. We see this and hear about this every day.
What we do not see and hear about every day are the Palestians. We have a genocide taking place in Gaza but they are being "othered" and silenced. People are attacked and bullied if the even advocate for medical aid for innocent civilians. It's heartbreaking.

LetThereBeLove · 26/02/2025 12:08

AnxiousRose Palestinians are not being 'othered' or silenced. The numerous marches and demonstrations on their behalf as well as posts here on CITME illustrate that perfectly. In addition mainstream media generally is most supportive of Palestinians, especially the Guardian and the BBC here in the UK.

I'm also still waiting on the pps response on whether she would describe the actions of Israel in the West Bank as terrorism, very telling

I have no idea why you are so interested in my opinion? I don't agree with settler violence at all but I don't consider it terrorism. Terrorism is what Hamas is guilty of, in spades. Is that 'telling' enough for you?

LetThereBeLove · 26/02/2025 12:39

AnxiousRose I'm not sure why you want my credible sources? I read Israelilefty and Scirocco's posts on MN who both give valid information and opinion. As far as MSM is concerned there are no truly credible sources AFAI can tell, although Haaretz is good.
