Conflict in the Middle East

Do people fully support Palestine?

I read this article and the scales fell from my eyes a bit: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/feb/11/amid-the-ceasefire-wrangling-how-popular-is-hamas-in-gaza-now

I hadn’t realised that a majority of Gazans want a conservative Islamist state and the complete destruction of Israel to create an Islamic state covering the whole country (from the river to the sea I guess). They also support violence and even the sacrifice of their own lives.

I am appalled by the destruction and loss of life in Gaza, but having read this article I can’t understand why support for Palestine isn’t more caveated. Why are people waving flags and supporting Gaza so unconditionally? When you look at the polling described in the article it seems fairly clear that many/most don’t actually want peace unless it follows the complete destruction of Israel.

For me it’s a bit like supporting Iran. I would never wave the Iranian flag around because of what the country stands for. In this case I am horrified by the scale of destruction wrought by the IDF so support Palestine completely in that respect but I’d never wave the flag or chant the slogans.

If you consider yourself ‘pro-Palestine’, what do you think of the ideology described in the article?

Amid the ceasefire wrangling, how popular is Hamas in Gaza now?

The group still projects a powerful presence but, after all the damage, it will need to divert blame if the truce collapses

I think if he was making those statements about other religions people would find his comments highly offensive. Not when it's Islam though.

Everyone on this thread should be watching “Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, on BBC2 at the moment.

People take the mick out of, and criticise Christianity all the time. So what. Draw a cartoon of a particular religious leader and it can end up in death (as at Charlie Hebdo) or losing job (teacher in UK) or ridiculous hate marches. Words cannot be tolerated by some. Other religious people might ignore a little easier.

I responded to your ridiculous claim that 'if he made those claims about other religions.... blah blah etc etc ' you are totally incorrect of course. Other religions are often criticised.

Other religions just ignore statements or might say they are unhappy but not as drastic a reaction as some do of couse (eg Charlie Hebdo).

ImmediateReaction · 17/02/2025 22:19

What rot. I replied to your incorrect statement. Then you edit your response to pretend I was islamophobic , your edit is laughable.

Your claim about 'other religions' was incorrect 😂

I saw it, it was awful.

I agree, it is.

Poster doesn't like individuals pointing out, she made an incorrect statement, h
go read her statement.

Then claims islamophobia, now that is ridiculous. I usually don't bother to engage, lose an argument and shout islamophobia 😂

Adropinthepond · 17/02/2025 22:27

There was nothing incorrect about what she said. Anti-Islam sentiment is rampant on these threads.

Lalaloveya · 17/02/2025 22:30

If people were praising someone who makes comments saying they'd choose a cow over millions of Jews posters here would be offended.

But it's hilarious and laughable if the comments are made about Muslims.

I didn't make an incorrect statement and I edited my post to avoid making 2 in a row.

It isn't a secret. The post says that its been edited so I've no idea why you're behaving like it's a gotcha moment.

Scirocco · 17/02/2025 22:32

There is a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment on here, consistent with the high levels of it across many aspects of UK society and media.

She said it to me personally in an edit on her post. I merely picked her up on her incorrect assertions that you couldn't criticise other religions without people getting highly offended. Go read her comment.

People actually criticise Christianity all the time, films taking the mick, jokes etc, so what. In a free country, religion should be allowed to be criticised for how ridiculous it can be, all religions, none are above any other, they all have very old writing that doesn't fit well with modern times.

An edit is a spelling correction, not an entire sentence alluding to a poster being islamophobia because a poster dared to challenge your incorrect claim qbout other religions.

People are allowed to correct your claims without being labelled islamophobic.

Seeing as you continue to post about me rather than to me I'll answer. The second line of that post you keep going on about is a general comment about the rampant Islamaphobia around here. I don't know if you're Islamaphobic or if you have similar contempt for all religions as you allude to upthread. I usually skip your posts when I see your username so I don't know your position on it.

I still didn't call you Islamaphobic though. I don't know if you are or not as I don't read your posts.

I'll accept your apology that the islamophobia comment wasn't about me, just your general editing of yours.

Please skip my posts that's fine.

I didn't apologise I was just clarifying.

It's about Muslims wanting to wipe out Jews. Always has been.

I am gobsmacked at some of the people supporting Palestine who clearly don't know what the fuck they're supporting.

Really ? Then I'll tell Hawra that, and also tell her that she's doing an awful job of it, as we've known each other over fifteen years and I'm still alive.
