Conflict in the Middle East

Do people fully support Palestine?

I read this article and the scales fell from my eyes a bit: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/feb/11/amid-the-ceasefire-wrangling-how-popular-is-hamas-in-gaza-now

I hadn’t realised that a majority of Gazans want a conservative Islamist state and the complete destruction of Israel to create an Islamic state covering the whole country (from the river to the sea I guess). They also support violence and even the sacrifice of their own lives.

I am appalled by the destruction and loss of life in Gaza, but having read this article I can’t understand why support for Palestine isn’t more caveated. Why are people waving flags and supporting Gaza so unconditionally? When you look at the polling described in the article it seems fairly clear that many/most don’t actually want peace unless it follows the complete destruction of Israel.

For me it’s a bit like supporting Iran. I would never wave the Iranian flag around because of what the country stands for. In this case I am horrified by the scale of destruction wrought by the IDF so support Palestine completely in that respect but I’d never wave the flag or chant the slogans.

If you consider yourself ‘pro-Palestine’, what do you think of the ideology described in the article?

Amid the ceasefire wrangling, how popular is Hamas in Gaza now?

The group still projects a powerful presence but, after all the damage, it will need to divert blame if the truce collapses

I think we can defend Palestines without undermining the experiences of those on the 7th October which was also hell.

I'm not undermining anything. I'm know what the Israeli people went through on October 7th was hell and I have nothing but sympathy for them.

But how can we support the Palestinians without pushing back on the Israeli government's lies and propaganda?

I stand by what I said. The Israeli government has continuously used lies and propaganda to justify the genocide of the Palestinians.

I refuse to be gaslit into believing otherwise.

Fifiworks · 14/02/2025 00:11

I agree with you on lies and bias to justify killing Palestinians but it was the rape comment - I well believe that men rape women in conflict situations. I don’t think we can dismiss those claims.

There is so much to criticise the Israeli government about without dismissing the lived experiences of those who were harmed through the terrorist attack.

Thank you. The post from @lionlass is despicable misinformation.

Repulsive.

I hope you know that posts like yours do the exact opposite of bolstering 'support for palestine'

lionlass · 14/02/2025 07:13

So you agree that Israel lied about 40 beheaded babies and babies being put in the oven but you don't think they would lie about mass rape?

Hamas wore body cams and live streamed every horrible thing they did that day.

It has the same meaning that it always has. Hatred of the Jewish people, as revealed in sharing antisemitic images and tropes, denying the right of the Jewish people to self determination, and countering accusations of antisemitism by claiming those accusing you are acting in bad faith.

I actually didn't. I like it when people are honest about who they are. I say let it stand.

I bet it gets taken down anyway tho. It's egregious.

Your comments are not only disgusting and unjust they also are harmful to the Palestinian cause you say you represent because it’s paints you as antisemitic.
It’s views like yours that made me become more sympathetic to the Israeli situation and to the antisemitism that Jews around the world are experiencing.

OpheliaWasntMad · 14/02/2025 07:44

I’m glad it’s not just “one side” that’s calling out this poster.
I don’t think anyone who undermines the suffering of the Israelis on Oct 7th (or the suffering of innocent Palestinians) should be tolerated by anyone.

lionlass · 14/02/2025 07:46

My views on Israel would be exactly the same if they were a Christian state or a Muslim state or an atheist state. I don't care that it's a Jewish state. I care that it has committed genocide and ethnic cleansing.

You are minimising and mocking the Oct 7th atrocity. ( A similar mindset to a Holocaust denier imo)

Presumably you keep well away from Turkey then?

Can you explain @OpheliaWasntMad ? I read this post as the poster feels that the religion isn’t pertinent to them it’s the actions of Israel in response to the actions of Hamas. Can you try and explain why that is minimising and mocking?

Can you tell us your views on China and Saudi Arabia?

People often say that they're not especially against Israel, they're just against 'genocide' etc etc. But they're silent about countries that commit atrocities, like Saudi, which is also our political ally. Which makes me think there is a special focus on Israel.

Edited

Yes that would be interesting. Its funny, I don't recall the weekly marches for Yemen or against Saudi Arabia. Yet the UK has sold far more arms to Saudi Arabia than Israel. Not long ago 30% of UK arms exports went to SA. SA ranked in 2023 as the world's most authoritarian regime. And China clearly perpetrating genocide.

lionlass · 14/02/2025 09:46

I guess I'm just more aware of Israel's genocide since it has been live streamed by its victims for over a year now. I've seen so many videos of dead children, children with missing limbs, babies left to die in incubators, children being sniped, pieces being collected into plastic bags, little hands sticking out of rubble. Gaza has been flattened. Almost every building destroyed. I've seen our own government lie to cover up for Israel and also actively participate in sending bombs and weapons so Israel can continue the killing. And I'm antisemitic because I disagree with all that? I literally don't give a fuck what religion anyone is. Everyone knows it's genocide and ethnic cleansing. Last time I checked both of those things are against international law. Everyone should be against Israel at this point. It has nothing to do with antisemitism.

SharonEllis · 14/02/2025 10:04

@lionlassso you admit you are just more aware of this war but its only Israel you seem to be against and you seem incurious about other wars going on, or why this particular war is being 'livestreamed'? Holding Israel to a different or exceptional standard IS antisemitism. Everyone doesnt know its genocide. There are entirely plausible arguments that it isnt. Not every war is genocide.

I honestly think antisemitism is the last socially acceptable form of racism and it comes largely from a place of ignorance.

It's worth questioning why you are so much more aware of this war, particularly the Palestinian perspective. My view is that there is disproportionate focus on this compared to say, the suffering in Yemen.

Why is there disproportionate focus? I think it's because there is an inherent dislike of Israel, more scrutiny of Israel, Israel is held to higher standards than somewhere like Saudi. I think this is partly driven by anti-Jewish racism, which is extremely deeply ingrained in the anti-Israel movement, to the extent that it's almost invisible. I do think as well there is a sort of reverse racism which says that you can't hold Saudi and China to the same standard because they couldn't meet it.

I don’t understand why you think people don’t know about and approve or disapprove of the behaviour of China, Saudi Arabia, or wherever? This is literally a board set up to discuss conflict in the Middle East. Surely we would naturally be focused on the death of tens of thousands of Palestinians?
