Who asked him not to attend?

The organisers of the event, Holocaust Education Ireland. He has spoken at every memorial since being President so for the past 7

I’m assuming that all the posters who are critical of President Higgins have actually read his speech but maybe not.

‘One of the cruellest aspects of the new antisemitism is its perverse use of the Holocaust as a stick to beat ‘the Jews.’

Shameful, what is wrong with the government of Ireland? How did they allow this to happen?

Just wait for an onslaught of comments; we will all be accused of deflecting criticism of Israel. The sole objective of some on MN is to argue and win, not listen and share views. Please don't give them the satisfaction. Let us remember the 6 million Jewish men, women, children and other groups who lost their lives during the Holocaust.

Where is that quote from?

ZebraPyjamas · 28/01/2025 20:04

SanctuaryCity · 28/01/2025 18:34

No it wasn’t. He could have mentioned the other groups affected by the nazis like the Roma etc but shoehorning in Gaza was crass and reflects really badly on the president and his team. Id be furious if the King made the same kind of sanctimonious tone deaf speech whilst purporting to be non-political. Icing on the cake was the silent protestor being dragged out of the room.

He did mention the other groups and he spoke about the Israel/Gaza conflict in what I read as a very unbiased way, I certainly wouldn’t describe what he did as “shoehorning in Gaza”

Why was Gaza mentioned at all?

Maybe he should have respected their request.

Thanks for sharing. I don’t see anti-semitism here, really confused as to what the issue is with any of what he said

Why was Gaza mentioned at all?

It shouldn’t have been mentioned.
It was one day to remember the victims of the Holocaust.

Why was Gaza mentioned at all?

He was talking about learning from the past and hatred/violence in the world etc etc, it fits with the overall theme of his speech.

Maybe you need to think harder. Just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t mean I’m wrong, and vice versa.

“Faux naivety” ??? Don’t know where you’re coming from with that one. Nothing “faux” about me!

Dulra · 28/01/2025 20:13

Comedycook · 28/01/2025 20:08

Did he mention any other conflicts?

He mentioned Israel, Oct 7th, hostages, Gaza, antisemitism, islamaphobia, racism, homophobia all in the context of othering and the danger of it. You don't have to read the speech but the context where he mentioned Gaza, the Oct 7th attack and the release of the hostages was linked to current ceasefire and a hope for peace

Was Sudan mentioned? Over 60k dead there now and it has been declared a genocide....I must re read and see if it was mentioned?

He introduced Israel/Gaza in the context of ceasefire/striving for peace which is why this conflict in particular is relevant to the theme of his speech.

What about a ceasefire in the DRC...

NordicwithTeen · 28/01/2025 20:18

Depends if someone has asked the question "what have we learned?"

MissAmbrosia · 28/01/2025 20:18

Ronald Lauder did the same at the Holocaust memorial - but he got a standing ovation. He said something along the lines of "the canary in the cage is the Jews - they came on Oct 7th for the Jews and now THEY are coming for everyone else, to destroy western civilisation" It was very clear who he meant by THEY, clear allusion to the Nazis, and there was some visible discomfort on faces of the various royals in the front row. I totally agree with OP though - yesterday was not the day for this. His speech was much acclaimed.

ZebraPyjamas · 28/01/2025 20:18

Comedycook · 28/01/2025 20:16

What about it? That’s only in the process of being negotiated or only in recent days, no? Presumably he had the speech written before that

So are you saying he only mentioned Gaza because there's now a ceasefire?

You're digging yourself a hole here...it's quite amusing to witness... particularly after your faux naivety on display earlier....
