Why didn't they just move on to the second phase as was negotiated and agreed before the initial ceasefire?

Trump has made repeated calls for Hamas to release all hostages. I did expect eventually a renewal of the conflict since they have refused that.

A senior hamas commander has been killed but also so many innocents, this is sad.

Hamas didn't refuse to release the hostages. Israel refused to go to the second stage of the ceasefire.

I think they should just release the people that they shouldn't have taken in the first place. The farce that has been the release of hostages with cheering and celebrations including over a mother and her babies and an old man should not have been allowed. Dragging the release on rather than doing the right thing and releasing them all should have taken place a long time ago. When did terrorists get to decide when to do things.

With Trump as POTUS he stated hexwanted the hostages released straight away and hamas ignored that.

Should never have taken them in the first place.

EasterIssland · 18/03/2025 06:35

Feel sorry for the poor gazans. Between 2(or 3 if we count trump) monsters. How are they going to rebuild their life

VolcanoJapan · 18/03/2025 06:44

I also feel sorry for the innocents in Gaza. Terrorists have run the place badly and launching an attack on their neighbours with hostages taken and still held was a dreadful decision with awful impact on both Gaza and Israel. Hamas need to go. A new government needs to run Gaza for the benefit of the innocents and not the benefit of the terrorist leaders.

Tell that to Hamas, then. My point still stands. It was Israel who refused to go forward with stage two as agreed and decided to bomb Gaza to smithereens again.

EasterIssland · 18/03/2025 07:13

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum released a statement on Tuesday condemning the renewed attacks in Gaza.
The claim that the war is being renewed for the release of the hostages is a complete deception – military pressure endangers the hostages and soldiers,” the statement read. “We must return to the cease-fire.”

I'm not sure hamas will listen to me! I'm not a Trump fan at all but when he said release all the hostages or else, i thought he was serious.

I hope the majority of people would want hamas to be defeated. Too many innocents have died in this conflict following October 7th. More innocents are dying again. Might hamas finally do the right thing and release the hostages and allow gazan to have a better future.

I see the IDF are saying they are targeting Hamas targets and a senior leader has died. Are they trying to topple Hamas like the Syrian uprising toppled Assad.

Still not sure why hamas don't just release all the hostages and why they were allowed to get in the position where they thought they were making all the decisions whilst posturing and strutting like peacocks during release of hostages. The vile scenes of cheering and glee over the bodies of babies didn't go down well of course.

I agree, a ceasefire is better. Just release the hostages.

Martymcfly24 · 18/03/2025 07:22

At least 330 people reported dead in Gaza after Israel launches surprise attack overnight https://jrnl.ie/6652379

330 dead.

So Hamas wanted to move on to phase 2 Israel wouldn't agree and now they have murdered 330 people.who thought they were safe because the ceasefire talks have not moved on

Please make it make sense.

This is not about bloody hostages if it was they would have continued the peace talks .
This has to be a turning point in they way they world sees the genocidal maniac.

There is no justification for this.

I am actually so so angry and upset this morning.

Scirocco · 18/03/2025 07:23

At least 330 reported killed so far...

Whatsinanamehey · 18/03/2025 07:28

I am so so angry too. It really isn't about the hostages, if it was then they wouldn't be risking killing them now through these attacks. It was clear from the start anyway that once all the hostages were released that Israel wasn't going to end the war or their attacks.

Whatsinanamehey · 18/03/2025 07:29

Targeting Hamas?

Then why is even the timed of Israel reporting of seeing images of dozens of dead children, women and the elderly.

They make me fucking sick.

Whatsinanamehey · 18/03/2025 07:30

Showing the world their barbarism has no end.

Well said. This is not about the hostages or Hamas. This is entirely on Israel wanting restart the genocide war.

VolcanoJapan · 18/03/2025 08:17

If Hamas actually released the hostages which then have held since October 7th 2023 then there would be massive pressure on Israel for a permanent ceasefire. Imo people would demand a ceasefire. Whilst hostages are still held, that won't happen.

All the hostages would have been released in the second phase in the deal Israel agreed to and then backtracked on and decided to cut off all aid, electricity and start their carpet bombing.

Whatsinanamehey · 18/03/2025 08:26

I was listening to a UN worker who said when the bombing first started for 15 minutes there was non stop bombs raining down every 5-6 seconds through out Gaza.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 18/03/2025 08:27

@VolcanoJapan what would the pressure consist of and who would be applying it ?
I can't help thinking that pressure should have been applied at an earlier stage to allow access for humanitarian aid throughout this war .

Whatsinanamehey · 18/03/2025 08:27

Israel is the one who turned back on the deal that would have released all the hostages because that would mean the war would also end. They don't want to end the war, they want to carry on killing Palestinians if they can't get them to leave Gaza.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 18/03/2025 08:31

I'm trying to understand what was agreed and what has happened , so I'm posting this from Wikipedia .
I think I'm being lazy and looking for insightful comments that will help me work out who is most at fault for this breakdown of the ceasefire.

On 1 March, the day the first phase of the ceasefire was scheduled to end, Hamas rejected an Israeli proposal to extend it to release more hostages. Hamas said the second phase should proceed as originally planned.[31] Netanyahu's office said that Israel endorsed a US plan to extend the Gaza truce for the Ramadan and Passover periods. Under this plan, half of the living and dead hostages would be released on the first day of the extended truce and the remaining hostages would be released at the end of the period if a permanent truce was reached. His office said that the initial deal allowed Israel to resume war at any moment after 1 March if negotiations were deemed ineffective. Following Hamas's refusal to accept the US ceasefire extension proposal,[32][33] Israel ceased the entry of aid to Gaza the next day, 2 March.[34][35] The humanitarian aid blockade was condemned by mediators Egypt and Qatar, as well as the United Nations, as a violation of the ceasefire, which stipulated that phase one would automatically be extended as long as phase two negotiations were in progress.[36][37][38] On 9 March, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen ordered to halt supply of Israeli electricity to Gaza.[39] On 14 March, Hamas said that it agreed to a proposal from mediators to release Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander and the bodies of four dual national hostages.[40][41] US and Israel rejected the offer.[42] On 18 March, Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Gaza as Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that Israel has "returned to fighting in Gaza".[43][44]

The deal that was agreed to was a three phase deal. When phase 1 ended, phase 2 was supposed to commence which would have seen the rest of the hostages released and an end to the war.

Israel refused to move on to phase 2 and demanded that phase 1 is extended instead as that would mean they wouldn't have to end the war once the hostages are released.

I think more and more calls for a permanent ceasefire would occur if Hamas just released the hostages. You can't have a terrorist group that launched one of the deadliest single terrorist single attacks making demands. I guess they could release them and see? Why did they take them, why are they still holding them, its barbaric.

I'm assuming most people here want hamas to go, the hostages to be released and a permanent ceasefire. All the posturing by hamas shows they aren't going anywhere. I think the people of Gaza need better governance and until Hamas go, they won't get that. They could stop this conflict if they laid down arms but they are more interested in staying than what's best for their people.

Whatsinanamehey · 18/03/2025 05:14

Why didn't they just move on to the second phase as was negotiated and agreed before the initial ceasefire?

Because Israel did not want to. They renenged on the ceasefire. This isn’t opinion, but fact. They broke the ceasefire in multiple substantive ways all during Phase I in the hopes it would provoke Hamas. This failed, so they have openly renenged on Phase 2. They had agreed to all the Phases in January. They have been given no cause to resume bombing.

I am sickened and angry by this because no matter how much Hamas is hated and reviled as a terrorist group, that is not an excuse to act in a completely evil way to kill innocent men, women and children caught up in the conflict zone by cutting off humanitarian aid, water/power and now bombing them.
