I'm pretty worried about this delay too. 50 prisoners who were going to be released were serving life sentences and 60 had long sentences - so those prisoners have done some pretty horrific things, and will undoubtedly go on to repeat further serious crimes. But that's the deal that was done, and should be honoured.

And at least some of the 445 other prisoners due to be released - who have been detained since the start of the war - will be innocent.

I hope it's a negotiating ploy to stop Hamas cruelties in the hostage handovers. It's ridiculous to suggest that giving the wrong body was a mistake. And bringing 2 hostages to watch the ceremony was another piece of huge cruelty. Some kind of push back from Israel is reasonable.

But I do hope the release goes ahead.

Thank goodness, someone with a sensible objective viewpoint.

The state of Israel came about in 1948, before this it was known as Palestine. You can't change history to suit what you believe was in the bible/torah/quran!

Actually the area you are referring to, while under the Ottomans, was referred to as the Holy Land, encompassing Bethlehem, Nazareth and of course Jerusalem. Some locals called the area filistin. It was never commonly known as Palestine at all.

UnGattino I also find it astonishing that no Palestinian supporter has commented on the sending the body of a Palestinian woman to Israel. Absolutely shocking of Hamas to do that to one of their own.

Yes, it’s very telling. But not a surprise.

I commented yesterday or the day before on the Palestinian lady wondering who she was and when her body would be returned and I was told not to derail the thread so maybe that's why no one is commenting, damned if you do and damned if you don't on some threads

You could have started a thread about that poor lady.

I don't have time to manage a thread I have a life, I assumed commenting on another thread about the bodies being returned to Israel was sufficient but nobody cared about the Palestinian lady so yes I agree its very telling

We all have lives and you don't have to 'manage' a thread - usually it is a discussion between Mumsnetters. End of.

I too wondered about about the life of the woman whose remains were handed over . So many dead . So much waste of life.

Makes no difference at the end of the day whether I started a thread on it does it, fact is I commented on the Palestinian lady and was basically told nobody cared so that's why nobody is commenting

I hope her body has been returned to Gaza 🙏

So do I. At least it won't be paraded like the bodies of the two babies were.

Her body was paraded like the bodies of the two babies, when her remains were mistaken for Shiri Bibas

I meant that the Israelis won't be parading it. Hamas shot themselves in the foot with that disgraceful display.

Liv999 · 24/02/2025 12:56

@LetThereBeLove Let's hope not, it just needs to be returned...

I actually don't think it's in the spirit of the site to start a thread and then not attend to it. People will reply to the OP and it's rude to not respond. I think it's absolutely valid to only start a thread if you are willing to give your time to people that took the trouble to read it and reply.

Maybe so but many threads run to 20+ pages and no one expects the OP to 'manage' it! I've begun threads myself and after a time just let them roll as they often go beyond the original OP.

That may be so but I chose not to, but if you want to talk about that poor Palestinian woman right now I'm very willing to, seeing as you feel nobody cares about her, in fact I'm so glad you brought it up

wordsworthundercover · 24/02/2025 13:25

@LetThereBeLove Yes, OK. I can see that the obligation on the OP to respond might diminish over time, but I also think initially replies would be expected. I'd also feel responsible for the thread, and that I should take an interest. We can agree to differ. Unusual for this board!

BBC is reporting that 4 bodies will be returned today / tonight. Hamas has agreed to hand over the bodies today without any public ceremony - unlike previous exchanges.

I hadn’t realised they had reached an agreement as well to release 600 people

The Israeli government says it has blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid into Gaza because the first phase of the ceasefire with Hamas has expired.

That post is not quite the full story is it? Israel is pausing aid because Hamas is refusing to agree to Witkoff's proposal. I have no idea who is in the right over this but lets at least get the headline right.

And of course if Hamas would release the hostages Israel would have no reason not to proceed. We seem to need to keep reminding everyone that the capture of hostages has NO jutification whatsoever and Hamas needs to release them immediately.
