Conflict in the Middle East

Israel and the UN

Why is Israel in the UN?

The far right government of Israel has made its contempt of the UN very clear. Recently described by its head of state as “contemptible”, a “house of darkness” and a “swamp of antisemitic bile”.

One of its ambassadors, somewhat melodramatically, shredded a copy of the UN charter in the general assembly and later said that the UN headquarters “should be ...wiped off the face of the Earth”.

They've declared the UN secretary general a persona non grata and banned him from entering the country. They've willfully obstructed a UN inquiry into the 7/10 attack. They've kicked UNRWA out of Israel and announced them a 'terrorist agency'.

They've bombed UN schools, warehouses and refugee camps killing over 200 UN staff. Not content with that, they're attacking UN peacekeepers and property in Lebanon.

Israel refuse to comply with UN resolutions yet remain a member of the UN. It's posited that should the UN try to kick them out under Article 6, it would be vetoed by their friends in the US.

The UN suspended South Africa for apartheid and illegal occupation of neighbouring countries yet hasn't suspended Israel. 40 countries condemned Israel's attacks on peacekeepers yet no action has been taken.

Israel treats the UN with contempt, says it's irrelevant and full of antisemites - maybe the question is: why doesn't Israel leave the UN?

I have asked myself the same question. You wouldn't stay in an organisation that was you found "contemptible”, a “house of darkness” and a “swamp of antisemitic bile”, would you?
It appears also the Israeli government has forgotten who granted them the right to a state. Funny that.

The US can't stand the UN and resents funding it but has used the UN over the years to further its causes; it's been a very useful tool.

Not so much for Israel though so it's a surprise they want to remain.

I can understand why the UN don't kick them out, it's because they'd have no one to negotiate with in the ME.

Un is useful for them. So they’re there for the benefit they get from it and ignore what they don’t want

SharonEllis · 13/11/2024 18:38

We had this exact thread a while ago. Nothing has changed. Its a nation. Nations are in the United Nations.

Westofeasttoday · 13/11/2024 18:41

Why is Russia in the UN then? This isn’t new or unique to Israel. They were on the security council for goodness sake while invading Ukraine.

i think the post would be better if it was why do countries who go against the UM, hate the UN or don’t adhere to UN policies remain in the group.

Because we can’t pick and choose.

Has Russia complained about UN, killed UN workers, accessed then of working with terrorists, and banned their secretary general ?

EasterIssland · 13/11/2024 19:05

*accused them

Yes

Westofeasttoday · 13/11/2024 19:19

Yes

Can you provide any links to any of these scenarios?

herecomesautumn · 16/11/2024 13:54

Can't you find a Twitter li k @EasterIssland

Russia laughs in the face of the UN and has presided twice over the UN security council while indulging in actual genocide in Ukraine.

It disingenuous to single Israel out in this regard.

Out of the 4 I’ve mentioned this is 1 of them.

Israel is singled out because no other country has gone as far as them. I looked up 'Russia attacks peacekeepers', 'Russia declares UN terrorist organisation', 'Russia tears up UN charter', 'Russia kills UN staff', 'Russia bombs UN refugee camps and schools' and I couldn't find anything.

Do you think Russia controls the world's media and it hasn't been reported? It's certainly an explanation.

Russian apologism a new low. A country that routinely exterminates its own dissidents, controls the press etc.

Does your Google not work the same as everyone else’s?

I just typed this in as a first check:

https://www.hrw.org/report/2023/11/09/tanks-playground/attacks-schools-and-military-use-schools-ukraine

So yeah you are wrong. For fun I tried a second time and metaphorically speaking they have ripped up the charter

Either your algorithms are skewed significantly to show only Israel is “wrong” of you are very biased in your thinking.

The destroyed playground of a kindergarten

“Tanks on the Playground”

The 71-page report, “Tanks on the Playground,” documents the damage and destruction of schools and kindergartens in four Ukrainian regions during the first months of the fighting. Most of the damage to educational facilities resulted from aerial attack...

We're all aware that Russia has committed atrocities during the invasion. That isn't the subject of the thread.

The thread is about Israel's contempt for the UN. I read your links with interest but couldn't find where Russia was targeting UN facilities or staff.

If you could point that out, it would be helpful. Many thanks.

The ignorance, or maybe just naïveté, is remarkable

Russian apologists are grim

Russia is actually carrying out an actual genocide before our actual eyes.

But it ain't Gaza, so....:

Don’t think anyone is accepting what Russia is doing. A poster has said that Russians behaviour is similar to Israel’s regarding Israel’s and I’m still waiting to see the proof of Russia behaving the same way as Israel.

280 URNWA workers (who are UN ones) have been killed by Israel.

Nope OP. I know the definition of genocide

What russia is doing is not comparable to gaza. It is an actual genocide and is so much worse

All innocent civilians.

herecomesautumn · 16/11/2024 16:40

🤣🤣🤣 you show me yours first OP

All the virtue signaling about genocide, you must have evidence

Like, I dunno, mass deportations, kidnap and forcible adoption of children, removal of language, literature and cultural facilities in invaded spaces. Burning books. Filtration camps. Imprisonment of political and civic leaders.
