Why is Israel in the UN?
The far right government of Israel has made its contempt of the UN very clear. Recently described by its head of state as “contemptible”, a “house of darkness” and a “swamp of antisemitic bile”.
One of its ambassadors, somewhat melodramatically, shredded a copy of the UN charter in the general assembly and later said that the UN headquarters “should be ...wiped off the face of the Earth”.
They've declared the UN secretary general a persona non grata and banned him from entering the country. They've willfully obstructed a UN inquiry into the 7/10 attack. They've kicked UNRWA out of Israel and announced them a 'terrorist agency'.
They've bombed UN schools, warehouses and refugee camps killing over 200 UN staff. Not content with that, they're attacking UN peacekeepers and property in Lebanon.
Israel refuse to comply with UN resolutions yet remain a member of the UN. It's posited that should the UN try to kick them out under Article 6, it would be vetoed by their friends in the US.
The UN suspended South Africa for apartheid and illegal occupation of neighbouring countries yet hasn't suspended Israel. 40 countries condemned Israel's attacks on peacekeepers yet no action has been taken.
Israel treats the UN with contempt, says it's irrelevant and full of antisemites - maybe the question is: why doesn't Israel leave the UN?
