Conflict in the Middle East

We're not seeing it, are we?

I watch the news, on the BBC, on RTE, on Channel 4 from time to time - but tonight it struck me that they don't show what's happening in the ME, they show a sanitised version of it that won't upset us. Even with the 'may contain distressing content' warning, what they show is edited to remove truly distressing content - ie, the truth of what's happening on all sides. I am not saying I want to watch extreme violence, but actually I think I should, because it's what's happening. I'm lucky to be in the position to observe it and not experience it. Maybe seeing the reality of the conflict would provoke more outrage and put more pressure on our politicians to take action to stop it. I did a bit of a deep dive into YouTube this evening and came away shocked - which I think any humane person would be. We need reality in our mainstream media, not trigger warnings.

I fully agree with you OP because what we see on the news is the edited softened down version you could say and even that is triggering. When you see the raw unedited footage there is no going back from it. If every single person saw the real aftermath of even one school bombing in Gaza, then there would not be anyone left who would carry on condoning the genocide.

Scirocco · 24/10/2024 21:03

No, you aren't seeing it. The reality is so, so much worse than will be shown on mainstream news. What you see is sanitised and edited.

OhMaria2 · 24/10/2024 21:35

The cover up is disgusting. But how people are managing not to see this stuff for themselves on social media is beyond me. My insta feed looks like a butchers shop window. Or if they do see it they say with a straight face that it's fake footage and made up by the Palestinians.

Thing is, we don't (I don't) all have an insta feed - I had to go actively searching for coverage. If I hadn't I could have sat in a little bubble of ignorance and just believed everything I was told. Many people won't even consider looking at this stuff; they have more immediate, personal issues to deal with and trust their usual news outlets to give them a summary of world events. This is just one of many horrific ongoing worldwide conflicts, but the media promote the stories they feel will be relevant to their audience, as has always been the case.

I can't physically or psychologically bear to see the images, personally. I don't think that makes me ignorant, and I don't feel that I 'should'. I'm fully aware of the horror that's going on but I'd not be able to function if I had to look at them as it makes me physically sick and beyond disturbed to the point of debilitation. Personally I do prefer a sanitised version so at least I can follow the key events. I don't need to physically see people being blown apart, and I don't believe that's a denial of reality.

And Aljazeera News has been taken off terrestrial tv- now only available with an internet connection https://www.aljazeera.com/www.aljazeera.com/www.aljazeera.com/www.aljazeera.com/www.aljazeera.com/www.aljazeera.com/

Oh my god are you actually kidding me? Why?

Mischance · 24/10/2024 22:19

I am at a loss to know how we might put pressure on our politicians to "stop it." If it were that easy it would have stopped already. I do not need to see the graphic pictures - I have more than enough imagination.

WAGinSpain · 24/10/2024 22:21

Absolutely agree with this. I am really concerned about what is going on. In particular with Iran which has been going downhill for a long time. I'm worried for the future but you don't hear about what is really going on via the MSM. I am worried about russia and iran clubbing together, with china too and north korea.

MissyB1 · 24/10/2024 22:24

Our politicians are not listening. They have decided not to condemn it, not to take action. I've written to my MP 4 times on this matter, not one reply 😡

TheUsualChaos · 24/10/2024 22:25

No sorry, I don't want to see it. It's distressing and traumatising to see visuals of the reality. That doesn't mean I don't care or don't understand what is actually happening to people including children when we hear the words "air strikes". It's horrific. I don't need to see it to know that.

I just wish the world could make this stop.

dollius · 24/10/2024 22:26

Watch/read Al Jazeera. Only news org with journalists inside Gaza and reporting the actual human stories from the West Bank. And before anyone comes on to say their journalists are Hamas or similar nonsense - no, they are not and it is libellous to say they are. AJE is a fully reputable, fact checking news organisation which has been smeared by Western media and Israeli politicians. Quite a few of their journalists have been assassinated for basically reporting the truth

On Sky not terrestrial - you can't get it now with just an aerial

Ah sorry misunderstood I thought you meant you couldn’t get it in on the TV only on online.

Yes, it is been sanitised. The only place that isn't Instagram and Twitter I can see what's going is Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera is a amazing. It's horrific how there journalists are being targeted with is libelous crap that they're Hamas. I follow some of these people on twitter, so I feel like I know them a little. I'm worried for them.😢

Daftasabroom · 24/10/2024 23:18

The Radio 4 coverage carries a lot of impact, as do many of the better written, longer, news articles.

I don't know whether it's the slower pace of delivery Vs the visual shock of an image, or just good narrative journalism.

Inextremis · 25/10/2024 20:29

Thank you for the recommendations of Al Jazeera. I've been reading/watching on their website, and feel more informed and also far more angry, frustrated and helpless.

OP posts:
PeasfullPerson · 25/10/2024 21:05

I don’t think people should be forced to watch or read about what is happening, or that it should be pushed at them. But, if someone has tuned in to watch or purposively gone to read about what is happening, or wants to down play it, then it should be made more clear to them what the reality is, rather than pretending things are better than they are, like you are delivering bad news to a bunch of primary school children.

Even with videos and the most graphic descriptions, I am sure that nearly all of us not there are unable to grasp the full spectrum of horror that people’s minds and bodies are being forced to experience. Watching and reading are not the same as experiencing.

Oh, they are listening very well. Only we live in a much more limited democracy than we imagined.
In the past 12 months I started to understand the meaning of the UK's "special relationship" with the USA. Basically, it means the UK does not have an independent foreign policy on some matters that concern the US.

Namerchanger24 · 26/10/2024 18:10

The beeb is completely pointless re accessing news. There are a couple of decent reporters probably..but it is deliberate. Channel 4 slightly better...if you compare beeb to channel 4 it is a completely different world!

PurpleCarpets · 26/10/2024 18:46

I'm really not convinced that we need to watch mutilation, rape and murder on the news to know what it entails and that it should be stopped. Most people who knew that they would be confronted with video of that nature at 10pm would just turn off the news.
