A PM works with a cabinet & political party.

Yes I know and usually the PM empowers a lead negotiator to work within red lines that only the PM can move/change. The cabinet are all advisors to the PM anyway, he doesn’t need their approval unless his primary concern is his own political career and not what is best for the country.

The IDF did not think this about the Philadelphia Corridor. It was all in The Times of Israel two days ago.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi chimed in to raise his own concerns about the prime minister’s strategy: “The IDF will know how to enter and return to the Philadelphi Corridor at the end of the first six weeks of the ceasefire. There are enough constraints in the talks, you don’t need to add another.”
……
and,

Gallant snipes at Netanyahu, pleads with ministers
Gallant then told the ministers that their vote means that if Israel faces “two possibilities — either keeping the IDF deployed on the Philadelphi Corridor or bringing home the hostages — you are deciding to stay on the Philadelphi Corridor. Does this seem logical to you?” Gallant asked. “There are living (hostages) there!” Gallant exclaimed.

Dermer responded, “The prime minister can do whatever he wants.”

Gallant replied, “The prime minister can indeed make all the decisions, and he can also decide to have all the hostages killed.”

At this point, other ministers in the room called out Gallant for speaking to the prime minister in such a manner.

I saw similar scrolling leaves in other Israeli media outlets as well.

“The decision by the security cabinet on Thursday to keep Israeli forces on the Philadelphi route even as part of a possible hostage release deal, contrary to the position of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, means one thing: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is once again thwarting the deal, or at the very least putting up obstacles to its feasibility.

There is no disputing that Israeli willingness is insufficient to sign a hostage deal; Hamas must also demonstrate willingness. But while it is difficult for Israelis to assess directly the organization's readiness for a deal, they have sufficient data to question the willingness of the Israeli governmentunder Netanyahu to conduct serious negotiations out of a desire to complete a deal: to bring the hostages home to Israel in exchange for taking the risks that are inherent in such agreement.

The defense minister's opposition to Netanyahu's latest move demands the public's attention. It shows that the insistence on the Israel Defense Forces remaining on the Philadelphi route is not rooted in security needs; its source is not in the military and the considerations guiding the prime minister are not solely security-related.”

The defense establishment, which Gallant represents, believes that the hostage deal can go forward in its current formulation. That is, Netanyahu is insisting on a condition that is not required by circumstances.

Yes,

“The IDF will know how to enter and return to the Philadelphi Corridor at the end of the first six weeks of the ceasefire. There are enough constraints in the talks, you don’t need to add another.”

(IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi last Thursday 29 August as reported by The Times of Israel 30 August.)

These terrible deaths show what Israel is dealing with. Israel quite rightly wish to pursue a war to eradicate Hamas the perpetrators of these crimes.
However all we hear about is Israeli 'genocide' from various voices in the media and it conveniently forgotten there is a murderous terrorist regime in Gaza who are prepared to take hostages, torture and kill them.

We can only hope the IDF are successful in teaching more hostages but the savagery of Hamas might prevent this.

Perhaps this discussion could be the start of another thread.

There are still many Israelis held hostage in Gaza, and this thread is for news and support for them.

^There are still many Israelis held hostage in Gaza, and this thread is for news and support for them.*

That is so true, and it is a shame to lose track of who they are and what has happened to them and their families. among the other discussions that come up.

It is difficult to disengage their plight from what is happening politically and militarily that might help or hinder their release from captivity. This thread with the word hostage in it has also seemed the place for hostage release/ ceasefire discussions. You are right though that a separate thread might help even though there is so much crossover.

I feel your grief for their cruel loss. Seeing the community coming together in peace to share the burden of grief is a very bittersweet experience.

I will hold them all in my head and heart, I will not forget those who still need to come home.

Thank you @EllaDisenchanted for this, and for so steadfastly bringing the hostages themselves to the attention of people reading here over all these months.

What a wonderful loving woman Hersh's mum is. I wish I could help her bear some of her pain. I think she speaks for so many people.

BeretInParis · 02/09/2024 15:02

"I just need to learn to feel you in a different way." This broke me. Hersh's mum is so articulate. :(

Parkingt111 · 02/09/2024 15:21

What a woman she is. One thing that struck me was she still has the tape with the number of days the hostages have been held captive. She hasn't stopped just because her son has been killed, she is continuing to highlight the cause of the others.

BeretInParis · 02/09/2024 18:36

Definitely good to see @SababaToo. I'm not familiar with them as an organisation and so had a quick google. It appears to be a group comprising scholars and faith leaders from all Islamic sects and schools of thought (including Sunni and Shia). Interestingly I found a Reddit thread from a couple of years' ago where some were very scathing of them, stating they were false Muslims who were pro-Israel and defended Zionists. Isn't it a shame that they can't be both Muslim and pro-Israel in some people's eyes? I don't see both as being mutually exclusive. However, their statement is really heartening and I wish more organisations followed suit and recognised Hamas as the terrorists they truly are - with only their own self-interest at heart.

We can only hope they managed to inflict a few blows and cause some damage when they fought back, presumably with their bare hands.
