What a silly, shallow commentary on the conflict with no sense of irony that it started with a massacre of innocent people at a music festival. Anyway, how do we vote Hamas out next week?

Quite.

ConnieCounter · 29/06/2024 08:59

Some people think that killing tens of thousands of civilians in response to that, not to mention destroying their homes and denying them food, water and medical aid is not a legitimate response to what happened.

And that's a reasonable opinion to hold. Some people can see that both actions are wrong.

You spelt genocide wrong.

That was clearly a separate point. He made 3 separate statements. 1. Unjust war, 2. Importance of voting 3. No more octogenarians going for president

Nothing controversial or unfair there

But thats the point, he didn't say that did he? He just said it was 'unfair' & asked who was pro-Palestine with no acknowledgement of the lives lost at a music festival or those still held hostage or the complexity of what being 'pro-Palestine' might mean. It was simplistic rabble rousing.

Of course its 'controversial' not to mention the massacre & the hostages in the context of a music festival.

What's happening in Gaza is unfair though isn't it? Sending solidarity to those who have been under siege for 8 months is reasonable. Do you think he agrees with what happened in October? I doubt it.

We have no way of knowing. Its an odd thing to miss out, isn't it,? Especially as the hostages are still being held.

EasterIssland · 29/06/2024 09:22

Seems like many artists are expressing their support for the Palestine country during this festival

It didn't start with the massacre

Israel were killing around 100 Palestinian CHILDREN each year for the last few DECADES

The massacre was just another event in the long running conflict

One massacre does not justify another

It does not justify the scale of death - over 37000 this year

Do pro Israelis mention the people of Gaza every time they talk about the hostages or the massacre in October? Are you upset that they don't?

It's not controversial it's his platform he can say whatever he likes he chose those three statements. That's not controversial he's an aging, fast becoming irrelevant, music star not a politician

Always been Palestinian flags waved in the crowds at Glastonbury

anotherlevel · 29/06/2024 09:50

Idles showed support for Palestine by dedicating his song to Palestine.

Charlotte Church showed her support too but she came under fire for it.

Actually, yes, away from places like this literally every conversation I have had with a 'Pro-Israeli' has been very rounded & talked about various aspects the horrors of the conflict as a whole. This was his comment on the conflict from the stage at a music festival - a relevant context to mention the massacre of innocent people at a music festival. Stop with the faux naivety.

It's very rare around here. I'm glad that's not your experience elsewhere.

Why are you expecting a complex discussion of conflict in the ME from a pop star during their set?

Glastonbury is a music festival and he didn't so much as mention there had been an actual massacre at another music festival in the last year. He could quite easily have highlighted concern for the awful situation in Gaza while also acknowledging Nova, a music festival, at Glastonbury, a music festival.

I imagine that with limited time, during a set, he didn't have time to bring in every nuance.

A music festival massacre which included hostage-taking, isn't a "nuance".

He evidently feels very strongly about an ongoing massacre which is currently affecting hundreds of thousands of people. He chose to talk about that during his set. He's not a politician and doesn't have to mention every aspect of the current situation. He chose to focus on the plight of the Palestinians.

SharonEllis · 29/06/2024 10:56

@cupcaske123 of course he has every right to say what he likes. Its his choice of priority & ommission that I am commenting on. Expressing solidarity with the families of those murdered & kidnapped at a music festival would take less than a minute. You are choosing to minimise the worst atrocity against jewish people since the Holocaust as a 'nuance'.

That’s a really disingenuous response.
The lack of solidarity with the Nova music festival victims is striking .
It’s disappointing that some people never want to remember the victims of October 7th .

I wasn't. A simple 'solidarity with those innocent people who never came back ftom the Nova Music Festival' would have been quick & appropriate.
