Boycotting Israeli products/services

the7Vabo · 18/06/2024 15:54

I’m trying my best to support the boycott. For those doing the same - what products/services are you using instead?

The hardest one for me has been giving up on going to Disney Paris next year. I had planned it as a joint birthday present, kids will be the perfect age. But I can’t stand in Disney with my kids knowing they support a regime killing kids.

Any good alternatives to Disney, or any other brand on the list?

Also, for a small country Israel seems to produce/hold interest in a lot.

Hmm

What's your point? That Israel is a remarkably dynamic, entrepreneurial successful country? I wonder if its somethong to do with being the only democracy in the region?

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 18/06/2024 20:21

@HelpAGirlOut1234 It’s on the list of names I sent. There were several Thai tourists at the music festival.

Please don’t deny this happened. Don’t minimise what Hamas did.

This is quite some mental gymnastics.

So you're boycotting Israeli products based on the UK response. But you won't boycott China despite their behaviour because of the UK's stance on it? Surely if your main issue is the UK response, you'd be boycotting British products?

So what do you actually care about and who are you trying to punish?

The dog ate her boycotting homework.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 18/06/2024 20:22

And @sprigatito do you have personal experience of ‘them’?

sparkleowl · 18/06/2024 20:22

Bumble6 · 18/06/2024 19:49

If you are boycotting goods from Israel because you believe it is commiting genocide but you don't also boycott good from countries like China then it's just hypocrisy. People seem to only concern themselves with what is the current trend.

I believe there’s a lot of antisemitism around which enables people to boycott anything from Israel with a clear conscience or so they think.

Thank you, @the7Vabo, for caring and trying to make your shopping habits consistent with your values. The actions of the Israeli government and IDF in Palestine are abhorrent.

In a world in which money is considered to be so important, one way in which we as individuals can help make a difference is to try to align our spending with our values. It's not always possible but if people do it where they can, it can really help. We saw the effectiveness of boycotts in the campaign to end apartheid in South Africa.

There are different views on the BDS movement, so if you feel it isn't the right fit for you, don't feel like you aren't contributing - many people use other resources to guide their choices as well as or instead of BDS, or make their own lists. Sometimes, it can be unavoidable or boycotting something could result in hardship or distress for someone - what I do in those occasions is donate an equivalent sum to a charitable organisation working to support Palestinians.

Someone earlier mentioned China and the horrendous human rights abuses and genocidal campaign against Uighur Muslims. Just like in the case of Israeli products in the context of the actions of the Israeli government, trying to reduce our consumption of goods made in China is one way we can show our opposition to the actions of their government. I've tried boycotting all 'Made in China' products but it's extremely hard... my compromise is to minimise my purchasing of them, and it is possible to cut right down.

Buying local can be a great way to change spending habits to move away from funding the big corporations and many boycott targets. It also helps the environment, supports local businesses, and can lead to getting better quality products. For example, the fruit and veg from my local farmers' market is in a different league from the supermarket stuff.

This is such a well thought and written post.

And I agree, every little we can do to boycott helps.

For those who don't know, look at the Irish Dunne's Stores workers who boycotted the South African produce they were expected to handle and the impact that had on the effort to end apartheid in the region.

I think a lot of people's pro-Palestine stance is rooted in antisemitism, it just gives them opportunity to voice it publicly without repercussions.

Of the IDF? Yes, I do. But I'm sure you'll understand that I won't be detailing it here.

Boycotting Israeli companies attacks ordinary Israelis. Please explain how the boycott directly affects Netanyahu's government?

Israeli companies will pay taxes. Those taxes go towards funding Netanyahus government and his choices while in government. They go towards funding illegal settlements. They go towards funding weapons purchases. Israel spends over 4% of their GDP on their military. Lots of people don't want to fund that and that's their choice.

I am not denying anything, there was atrocities carried out that day.

But outside of the names on a list, can you point me to a reliable source that references these instances please?

So do you believe Israel has no place to defend itself and should lose it's military?

They’re in the media, just google for yourself. The Thai citizen was named.

What a load of absolute bullshit. And I've heard it come from the mouths of so many people.

Why the hell would I have anything against the Jewish people? I absolutely do not.

What I do have something against, is the collective punishment of an entire population, mostly women and children, for the acts of a terrorist organisation.

This has nothing to do with religion or antisemitism to me...

Did I aim my comment to you personally? It was an observation I've made based on all the media coverage and pro-Palestine marches.

I don't think the tiny bit of tax paid on your carrots will make any difference. If Israel stopped spending on its military, however, it would be completely wiped out by Iran, Hamas the Houthis etc. But you do you.

Lovely, thank you for this thread - there are quite a few things I didn't realise I needed, but will now be buying and recommending to family and friends 💙

The decapitation of the Thai citizen is hardly a secret. Israel played the footage Hamas took at a UN General Assembly meeting.

Here's a link about the Thai government complaining.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2673999/death-clip-disrespectful

It's a criticism of Israel being reproduced in a Thai newspaper, so presumably that will be acceptable.

@Polka83 no need to buy supermarket hummus - here's an easy recipe that can be customised to make any type of hummus you like. Another option, if you have any near you, is to ask in a local Middle Eastern or Asian food shop; these often stock smaller brands or even sell homemade versions. While I love homemade hummus, my actual favourite hummus is made by the owner of our local Syrian bakery.

Hummus حمص

Hummus has become so popular in the US in the last few years. It's availabe in so many stores. Yet the authentic taste of hummus that I grew up eating differs from what's in your

@Sunshineonasameyday and I can guarantee you that the very vast majority of people attending the pro Palestinian marches in my country don't have an antisemitic bone in their body.

What they abhor is the murder, slaughter and destruction of an entire people. That's what the problem is... not the fact that these people are Jewish.

I'm actually so sick of this antisemitic accusation, most people couldn't care less what religion these people are... they are just devastated by the horrendous loss of life.

We have been using the No Thanks app, lots of my usual favourites have been replaced and I have a note on my Tesco delivery not to deliver any fruit/veg of Israeli origin.

I also don't support terrorism @Sunshineonasameyday ... but in the same vein, I sure as hell will not be giving my hard earned money to companies supporting an absolutely horrific genocide.

All birthdays, Mother's Day and Xmas day gifts from my family and friends have also been cash donations to charities supporting the Palestinian aid efforts.

Do you spend a lot of time in the kitchen at parties?🥳

Here’s confirmation from Human Rights Watch about the south East Asian migrant workers who were killed by Hamas.

Here’s an eyewitness account of that attack:
