Boycotting Israeli products/services

the7Vabo · 18/06/2024 15:54

I’m trying my best to support the boycott. For those doing the same - what products/services are you using instead?

The hardest one for me has been giving up on going to Disney Paris next year. I had planned it as a joint birthday present, kids will be the perfect age. But I can’t stand in Disney with my kids knowing they support a regime killing kids.

Any good alternatives to Disney, or any other brand on the list?

And to the individual who remarked that Israel has its hand in a lot for a small company, you're right. It is disproportionately full of hardworking, highly intelligent people galvanised by generational trauma.

Sometimes I think you hate us 'cos you ain't us 😂

Oh my word!

Just a point: it’s no one’s ‘own land’. The whole area has been disputed for the last two thousand years. Everyone who currently lives there is an immigrant population of some kind. All the land in the area was taken by force in some war or other by the dominant power in that area at the time Phonecians/ Macedonians/ Persians/ Romans/ Byzantines/ Ottomans. Because it is a strategically placed port area everyone has always wanted it.

The ‘original’ inhabitants of that area were the Caananites, who no longer exist.

Hence why the Romans decided during the third Jewish Revolt that is would be easier to keep the land and get rid of the people by murdering hundreds of thousands and selling the rest into slavery- thus creating the Jewish diasporas of Europe and beginning the anti-Semitic persecution of the Jews.

Who were then replaced in their ‘own land’ by the Arab migrations of the fifth and sixth century. When Jews returned to what had been Judea they were subject to anti-semetic laws and abuses.

The history is so, so complicated. It does not excuse what is happening now. But be careful of Tik Tok history lessons and half truths.

This has been bubbling over for decades. Make no mistake that Hamas know very well what they are doing. They want to prolong this. They are watch ‘their people’ die and still refuse to return the hostages. They want this. Why are people not directing more condemnation their way?

Edited

Absolutely.

Before 1948 the area known as Palestine was occupied by Arabs, Jews and Christians.

When the state of Israel was created it was home to just over a million Jews.
It was the expulsion of Jews ( and confiscation of their assets) from surrounding Muslim countries that forced Jews to settle in greater numbers in
Israel.

There are variations of it all over the internet. I saw that one on Twitter, but it isn't new.

Possibility it's propaganda?

It's a revolting image.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 18/06/2024 20:04

@sprigatito

You’re using this to suggest that Jewish people support the murder of Palestinians. In which case you need to be sure that is exists and is being actively sold to Israeli’s by Israelis. Otherwise it is too easy to mock up this stuff and pump it out as propaganda. Where is it actually for sale?

Thanks for your reply I’ll certainly read that article.

I’ll confess I know almost nothing about BDS. I had heard certain things like McDonalds giving out meals to the Israeli army and went looking for the longer list as such.

Like many if not most Im horrified by the current situation in Gaza. I’m started go wonder why wee both teaching history I’m schools, clearly we don’t learn any lessons from it.

I want to do what I can.

Are you equally horrified by what hammas did? Are you boycotting Lebanon Syria Iraq Iran Saudi etc etc etc

What China is doing is against the Uyghurs is extremely worrying.

If my government did not reflect my views about what is happening in China and even went as far as giving China military assistance to target and even kill the Uyghurs- I would be looking at what I can do to protest.

I want to boycott Israeli products because it’s the only way I can to protest when my government is not only silent but assisting the IDF.

Does anyone know any supermarkets selling humus from non-occupied territories?

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/22/uk-mps-declare-china-is-committing-genocide-against-uyghurs-in-xinjiang

Were you aware the UK gives aid to China and is a much bigger trade partner of ours than Israel? Or did you know that before you drew this line that conveniently doesn't require you to engage in a boycott that might require a bit more of you than changing your hummus?

No it highlights your hypocrisy and double standards.

Well you did ask. And it did sound incredibly stupid. I will have to stand by that I’m afraid.

This is quite some mental gymnastics.

So you're boycotting Israeli products based on the UK response. But you won't boycott China despite their behaviour because of the UK's stance on it? Surely if your main issue is the UK response, you'd be boycotting British products?

So what do you actually care about and who are you trying to punish?

Right, so not for sale and condemned by the Israeli government. Disgusting. I hope the people who had them made were dropped from the army and prosecuted.

HelpAGirlOut1234 · 18/06/2024 20:12

@Noonecares245 I completely agree with you.

But it appears people like this can never actually hold a reasonable debate without accusing me of supporting Hamas or being antisemitic etc. Accusing me of supporting the rape and murder of women and children... when that is exactly what the Israeli military is doing in Gaza and they won't condemn THEIR actions.

And I'm a sucker for a good debate and I'll be fucked if I let someone tell me that I support a terrorist organisation. Their support of the Israeli military is supporting a terrorist organisation in my view so I'll say my piece.

If you think there are trolls use the report button. This entire thread discusses the history of the region, Hamas and the Muslim brotherhood. Very little relates to recent history.

@sprigatito this t shirt looks made up to incite hatred.

Just posting images without explanation is an essential part of propaganda and it puts no onus whatsoever on the person forwarding it to explain it, verify its source, state if it's real or not, who made it, buys it, sells it, if it sells, if anyone anywhere ever has ever worn it. You could take any image from a print on demand service of a person in a black t shirt and superimpose on it any image you like, pretending any person or group of people on Earth had produced it, to galvanise hatred against them.

It looks like the sort of thing Russian bots would produce to stir up hatred that has no supporters on any side, nobody who buys it, wears it, produces it or has even heard of it.

FillyourPothole · 18/06/2024 20:14

Absolute cunts.

Can't wait to see them tried and imprisoned for the unbridled war crimes. I've never seen such televised destruction and violent abuse of civilians. It's disgusting.

If you read the article, it's not a one-off. It's an IDF tradition and the T-shirts are printed to order by an Israeli company. There are several designs, all equally offensive. It's not official IDF issue, but it is a regular occurrence and an aspect of the culture and humour of the world's most moral army. Which would come as no surprise to anyone who had any experience of them.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 18/06/2024 20:16

But the boycott is aimed at Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Boycotting Israeli companies attacks ordinary Israelis. Please explain how the boycott directly affects Netanyahu's government?

Murica · 18/06/2024 20:17

So killing a mother and filming yourself laughing while holding her tiny children is understandable.

Decapitating a Thai citizen with a fucking shovel who came to Israel to learn about farming must also be understandable.

Scirocco · 18/06/2024 20:17

Thank you, @the7Vabo, for caring and trying to make your shopping habits consistent with your values. The actions of the Israeli government and IDF in Palestine are abhorrent.

In a world in which money is considered to be so important, one way in which we as individuals can help make a difference is to try to align our spending with our values. It's not always possible but if people do it where they can, it can really help. We saw the effectiveness of boycotts in the campaign to end apartheid in South Africa.

There are different views on the BDS movement, so if you feel it isn't the right fit for you, don't feel like you aren't contributing - many people use other resources to guide their choices as well as or instead of BDS, or make their own lists. Sometimes, it can be unavoidable or boycotting something could result in hardship or distress for someone - what I do in those occasions is donate an equivalent sum to a charitable organisation working to support Palestinians.

Someone earlier mentioned China and the horrendous human rights abuses and genocidal campaign against Uighur Muslims. Just like in the case of Israeli products in the context of the actions of the Israeli government, trying to reduce our consumption of goods made in China is one way we can show our opposition to the actions of their government. I've tried boycotting all 'Made in China' products but it's extremely hard... my compromise is to minimise my purchasing of them, and it is possible to cut right down.

Buying local can be a great way to change spending habits to move away from funding the big corporations and many boycott targets. It also helps the environment, supports local businesses, and can lead to getting better quality products. For example, the fruit and veg from my local farmers' market is in a different league from the supermarket stuff.

@FillyourPothole

You haven’t been paying attention of you haven’t seen footage like the stuff from Gaza. People all over the world are doing tucking awful stuff to each other. It is horrifying. Sadly Gaza is not the only place where things like this are happening.

But it is the only place that Western social media cares about.

What happening is Gaza is awful, horrifying. The only way to stop it is to try to close the gaps between people, it lever the ones that already exist open.
