Boycotting Israeli products/services

I’m trying my best to support the boycott. For those doing the same - what products/services are you using instead?

The hardest one for me has been giving up on going to Disney Paris next year. I had planned it as a joint birthday present, kids will be the perfect age. But I can’t stand in Disney with my kids knowing they support a regime killing kids.

Any good alternatives to Disney, or any other brand on the list?

Id like to get the thread back on track and discuss the practicalities and effectiveness of boycotts.

i an pro boycotting Israel in this situation. I accept that others disagree with that stance for various reasons. All of it has been heavily discussed already.

You can see you are not anti Jewish until you are blue in the face. But you said this.

But the increasing levels at the moment are ultimately attributable to the actions of the state of Israel. If the state of Israel continues to target civilians in Gaza they know full well Jewish people around the world will suffer.

You are blaming Israel for the behaviour of racists. Absolutely no-one is responsible for anti-semitic behaviour other than antisemites.

I don’t agree they were blaming Israel for the very real increase in antisemitism in Europe due to the Gaza war. I feel you are quoting their much more nuanced post out of its meaningful context.

Acknowledging that there is a causal link between the IDF’s very real war crimes being appropriated by antisemites as an excuse to hate Jews isn’t attributing blame or responsibility for antisemitism back on to Israel.

It’s not disssimilar to the fact that Islamaphobes have appropriated the atrocities by Hamas as an excuse as well, causing a very real increase in islamaphobia in parallel.

Everyone in the world can see these are all linked. There wouldn’t have been a sharp increase in both antisemitism and islamaphobia if the Gazan war had not escalated to the degree it has.

I’ve seen quite a few protestors mention components in phones being made in Israel. I don’t have much knowledge of which parts and which phones, it would be interesting to hear more on this. BUT from the perspective of whether or not it is feasible to start boycotting this and what can be done, not from a defeatist perspective of telling people they may as well not bother.

Hopefully there will soon be a change of government in Israel and an end to this madness, and no need to boycott. However if it continues, then I think that a longer path towards freedom from Israeli tech might need to be explored. Perhaps with many small steps, that one day amount to something more.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 12/07/2024 21:33

There aren’t components made in Israel in phones. Israel developed some of the tech that make cell phones possible decades ago. It’s a bit like boycotting all aeroplanes because the Wright brothers were American.

The phones thing is a stupid argument. No one is suggesting everyone boycott every single Israeli thing.

Also people who don't agree with boycotting Israeli goods can just ignore this thread if they're so put out. No one is telling you how to spend your money.

I've been boycotting Israeli goods for years but I've been paying more attention since the genocide started.

I've changed the Teva products I used to purchase for other brands. I've switched brands for my medications. They bought Sudocreme a few years which I didn't realise until a few months ago. I thought it was still Irish owned. We get through a lot nappy cream in our house 😅

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 12/07/2024 21:43

At the detailed 4-digit Harmonised Tariff System code level, the most valuable Israeli export in 2022 were unmounted diamonds (14.8% of Israel’s total exports).

We can boycott diamonds?

On a serious note, I think it’s important to petition the U.K. Government to boycott arms sales to and from Israel. (Israel normally has a net export surplus in arms- it sells more than it buys).

The new Labour government would be more approachable.

Well that’s just ridiculous then isn’t it!

No wonder I can’t find much information on it 😂

Hahaha. Well that's hilarious 😂 And makes the argument even more ridiculous than I thought.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 12/07/2024 22:21

Yeah it’s why the argument goes “….if you want to boycott Israel bin your smart phone, but you won’t do that because you’re a hypocrite”

It’s because some of the technology behind cell phones was developed by Israel. It’s a silly argument.

Imagine boycotting Bonfire night because the Chinese invented fireworks and you want to take a stand against the CCP.

It’s more recent history than the invention of fireworks or aeroplanes, ofc, but the principle is the same.

Free Palestine and free those poor children that are being attacked, bombed and shot at on a daily basis.

Are you insinuating that until the hostages are released the children should carry on being killed? I hope not! Those kids have no say in what happens.

It takes a very special imagination to infer that from what @Comedycook said which was very straightforward in terms of both the english language and any normal moral code.

Well sadly there has been so much hate towards, and victim blaming of the Palestinian civilians on these threads, that I can well imagine some posters holding such horrific views. Never would I have thought I would write such a thing before the last few months. But boy have I had my eyes opened.

But if you read such a thing into a straightforward mention of the hostages who are just as much innocent victims of this situation as anyone else, then its very much on you, and nobody else.

No I think maybe the sheer amount of victim blaming has made me highly cynical now, but yes that is a huge shame.

Finallyloggedin · 15/07/2024 17:15

There are a lot of Palestinian hostages who also need releasing. This number is in the thousands, I believe.

Then are are the 2 million Palestinians being held hostage within Gaza.

I sincerely hope all the hostages are released from this hell on earth soon.

SpiritAdder · 15/07/2024 17:22

There was a video interview with an American doctor that was working for a humanitarian organisation. The interviewee asked, (paraphrasing) ‘you’ve been to conflicts all over the world, how is Gaza different or the same if you compare and contrast?” The doctor said several main points as to how this is the worst war he has ever seen:

  • the casualties are very different because it’s mostly women and children instead of fighters and their wounds are devastating- shrapnel so bad you can see a child’s kidney exposed or their spine is partially severed. Toddlers that are double amputees. Women with their abdomens ripped open.
  • no matter what anyone says, no aid is coming in. He filled suitcases with medical supplies and they were all confiscated by Israel on his way in
  • the devastation is much much worse than you can get from the photos and videos
  • the civilian death toll is likely 4-6x greater than is being reported
  • the health system is being systematically dismantled and it won’t be long before the IDF will put this hospital out of service too
  • no one can flee- Gaza is a killing box.
he was in tears at a few points and struggled to maintain his composure.

This is entirely untrue. There are no Palestinians hostages being held by Israel (a number of non Jewish hostages are held by Hamas and they do kidnap and murder gazans on the regular).

Yes some of the worst accounts I have heard have been from medical professionals coming out of Gaza. They are clearly traumatised and distraught by their experiences. They are on the cold face of what is being inflicted on the innocent civilian population

Yes there are no "hostages" but that's just semantics in my opinion. There are thousands of Palestinians interned without trial or even charged with a crime. So being held against their will and unable to get free from incarceration
