Boycotting Israeli products/services

the7Vabo · 18/06/2024 15:54

I’m trying my best to support the boycott. For those doing the same - what products/services are you using instead?

The hardest one for me has been giving up on going to Disney Paris next year. I had planned it as a joint birthday present, kids will be the perfect age. But I can’t stand in Disney with my kids knowing they support a regime killing kids.

Any good alternatives to Disney, or any other brand on the list?

It's not about the driver taking a rejected project back, it's about somebody noting, on their Tesco account, not to substitute with Israeli produce. That is the cusyomer's perogative. The driver commenting on how wonderful the customer is on that choice, is a separate issue. I can joke that I'm a pisshead when I order multiple bottles of wine. However, Tesco staff are going outside of their training, when they make their political allegiances known. So I call bullshit.

Have you been part of staff training with Tesco?

Where globally do people want to execute Jews?
I wouldn’t see Israel withdrawing as “falling”, they could simply state they have taken a different position?

The Houthis in Yemen have a slogan on their flag "God Is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, A Curse Upon the Jews, Victory to Islam"

These are the Houthis who are, and who have been for several months, attacking international shipping in the Red Sea, which they claim is in support of Gaza, but their flag shows their true nature.

And we've had fuckwits here on the streets of London chanting in support of them.

The Houthis are backed by Iran, who also back Hamas and Hezbollah who are actively trying to kill Jews right now.

Asking where globally wants to execute Jews, one should perhaps also look at what has happened to the Jewish population in Arab countries post WWII. Perhaps you could argue that they just upped and left despite being perfectly safe?

The suggestion that Jews aren't threatened in any way simply for being Jewish would be incredibly naive.

It is no surprise at all that there are people are taking this boycott of Israel and using it to boycott Jewish businesses just like people did in the lead up to the Holocaust.

People should learn from history, not TikTok (incidentally, if you're going to boycott Chinese stuff, that bloody platform should be top of the list).

Have you? I would like to think staff training, with any supplier is generic and excludes political influence.

Meant for @Dulra

Dulra · 19/06/2024 16:02

No. It is a legitimate form of peaceful protest and no where near as severe as state sanctions imposed on countries such as Russia

But surely stopping buying goods that people in Israel make and produce still affects them and punishes them?
I didn't say it was the same as the what is happening in Gaza

Ok you seemed so sure of what was covered I assumed you'd done the training. They were delivery drivers not suppliers

Well it's kind of the point to have a negative impact on tax revenue and to inconvenience (I think punishment is too harsh a word) people enough to get them to exert pressure on their government to address the situation

I'm talking about delivery drivers, who work for the suppliers. Why are you splitting hairs? No employee, who engages with consumers, should be commenting on political issues, when it pertains to the employers' choice of supplier.

I'm not splitting hairs I just misunderstood what you meant by this comment I would like to think staff training, with any supplier sorry!

You said the posters point about what her Tesco delivery driver said to her was bullshit, fine. I have no reason to think she was lying, let's leave it there.

OK, staff training with any employer, might have read better 👍. Apologies.

@ByMellowPlumBiscuit For the record, I didn't mention anything to my drivers, they saw my note to my picker and willingly mentioned it to me.

Almostwelsh · 19/06/2024 17:13

De Efteling is a good Disney alternative if that's OK on your list.

Have you... met delivery drivers? The people working in those roles round here will happily chat about anything and everything. Including things like "Good on you" for making choices based on ethical concerns.

But that only applies to Israeli's from your point of view presumably?

Sorry, but you're being incredibly naive or disingenuous. Those employees have their individual personalities, but that is limited to banter and/or comments about how good a product might be. I cannot see any of them slagging off a nationality because it suits you.

It applies to whoever or whatever you are boycotting. I am not talking about me personally I'm talking about the concept of boycotting

I think you're naive in this scenario.

I cannot see any of them slagging off a nationality because it suits you.

Who said they were slagging off a nationality? The poster has confirmed twice the interaction she had with the tesco delivery drivers why don't you believe her?

@Comedycook @fluffy90 I would welcome it if you were to start a thread about these other atrocities happening all over the world. It would be an excellent form of education for those not well up on what is happening globally.

However, THIS thread is about the genocide of the Palestinian people, and the people who want to boycott as a means of peaceful protest, so I'm not sure why you would try to derail that.

Start other threads.

You still haven't answered the question. Why so many threads on Israel, and so few on others? There are some (though rarely Trending) on other boycotts and so on, but you have to look for them and they appear with no way near with the same frequency as the Israel threads.

As for me, I don't start threads on political issues, so I'm not guilty of fixating on one country alone in the way these posters are.

Nobody said anything about slagging anybody off, though.

And if a delivery driver or anyone else started slagging off nationalities or faiths to me, I'd be making a complaint, as, I hope, would most people.

There's one Jewish person left in Yemen.

I'm afraid he died a few days ago. The last Jew in Yemen.

Co-op is not selling products from occupied territories.

US thinking of introducing labels for products make in occupied territories- to make it easier for people to boycott.

So US government clearly think boycotting individual businesses can influence policy.

I think other supermarkets may follow too.

Agreed, they did and still do, either in the long-term or as temporary measures. Off the top of my head, things I have recently seen on MN include,

Nestlé- baby formula scandal
South Africa - apartheid
McDonald's - the 'McLibel Trial'
The Sun - Hillsborough reporting
M&S - female changing rooms policy
Lush - support for Mermaids
Body Shop - where do I even start
Temu, Shein, other cheap textile suppliers
and Waterstones, Russia, Twitter(X), Nike, industrially produced meat and dairy products, products that damage the environment, products that exploit workers especially children, Amazon, veal, paté de foie gras, Comic Relief, Children in Need, the NSPCC, the RSPCA, wearing poppies.

I google searched "mumsnet" "boycott" and the abovelisted organisations, all in quotations marks so it only showed results with all 3 terms.

Nestlé- baby formula scandal - 4620 results
South Africa - apartheid - 14,500
McDonald's - the 'McLibel Trial' - 8370 results
The Sun - Hillsborough reporting - 13,000 results
M&S - female changing rooms policy - 5540
Lush - support for Mermaids - 3710
Body Shop - where do I even start - 4260 results
Temu - 39 results
Shein - 2230 results

ISRAEL - 16500 results
