Boycotting Israeli products/services

1000 replies

the7Vabo · 18/06/2024 15:54

I’m trying my best to support the boycott. For those doing the same - what products/services are you using instead?

The hardest one for me has been giving up on going to Disney Paris next year. I had planned it as a joint birthday present, kids will be the perfect age. But I can’t stand in Disney with my kids knowing they support a regime killing kids.

Any good alternatives to Disney, or any other brand on the list?

If @HelpAGirlOut1234 is in Ireland then her story is believable as there is overwhelming support for Palestine here.

I'm in Ireland and my pharmacist says a huge number of people have refused Teva products. Boycotting Israeli products isn't a new thing and it's not unusual - not here anyway - so the smart comments aren't really warranted.

Also Irish. 100% you’d swear from this thread that boycotting was some new social media concept.

So do you genuinely think that Israel is receiving the same amount of attention as other countries?
Do you think the notion that Israel receives a disproportionate amount of attention, compared to say Yemen, Nigeria, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, is a lie?
I see anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian threads in the Trending section of MN almost every day, and NOTHING about these other countries.

Absolutely correct. I've said time and time again if it was a Muslim country doing this to Gaza, no one would particularly care. They don't care about civil wars either...or the casualties involved in them. Far too complicated. They like a nice and simple goodies v baddies conflict where they can pick a side.

  1. Wasn't aware Tesco staff have signed up to any impartiality agreement 🤔
  2. Or they are agreeing with her because they agree with her

Impartiality, extends to commenting on political issues. I also don't believe their employers would appreciate their staff slating Tesco produce; quite the opposite.

Agreed, they did and still do, either in the long-term or as temporary measures. Off the top of my head, things I have recently seen on MN include,

Nestlé- baby formula scandal
South Africa - apartheid
McDonald's - the 'McLibel Trial'
The Sun - Hillsborough reporting
M&S - female changing rooms policy
Lush - support for Mermaids
Body Shop - where do I even start
Temu, Shein, other cheap textile suppliers
and Waterstones, Russia, Twitter(X), Nike, industrially produced meat and dairy products, products that damage the environment, products that exploit workers especially children, Amazon, veal, paté de foie gras, Comic Relief, Children in Need, the NSPCC, the RSPCA, wearing poppies.

sparkleowl · 19/06/2024 15:11

Ah but do people really boycott things or just claim to? It would have to be a load of people doing it to have any result.

I am in Ireland @ConnieCounter and anyone else who is interested. And yes, there is overwhelming support here for the plight of the Palestinian people, which goes back decades and decades.

Sweetpea333 · 18/06/2024 21:14

What has Israel done wrong? They were attacked first! Why is it so acceptable to be anti Israel but everyone's terrified of offending other religions and cultures?

The answer is sooooo obvious.
Israel were attacked in the most deliberate and barbarous manner by Gazans they had every moral right to fight back and thankfully are wiping out hamas who now wish they had never started it.

HelpAGirlOut1234 · 19/06/2024 15:21

@Mellowdramadrama @the7Vabo absolutely, boycotting isn't some new social media fad, we've been doing this as a form of peaceful protest for decades. I posted a link up thread to the Dunne's Stores strike in the 80s and the impact that had. This is nothing new in this country

HelpAGirlOut1234 · 19/06/2024 15:25

@Comedycook @fluffy90 I would welcome it if you were to start a thread about these other atrocities happening all over the world. It would be an excellent form of education for those not well up on what is happening globally.

However, THIS thread is about the genocide of the Palestinian people, and the people who want to boycott as a means of peaceful protest, so I'm not sure why you would try to derail that.

Start other threads.

HelpAGirlOut1234 · 19/06/2024 15:27

@sparkleowl so you say they are wiping out Hamas... it are they justified in killing 36,000 people, mostly women and children, by bombing, restricting aid, targeting aid workers and hospitals etc? How can anyone thing that is justified?

Oh, OK. I thought this thread was for the titillation of some middle class shoppers, who don't mind embarrassing delivery drivers, just trying to do a job. Imagine Harry turning up with one's delivery and shopper engages saying how glad she boycotted those Israeli carrots. Harry would be laughing in his pint, later. 😂

Or following the conversation as it has naturally evolved. No one likes thread police with nothing to contribute.

Care to explain why? It's already been put out there that a couple of drivers, have patted the boycotting customer on the back.

How has the thread been derailed; posters are counteracting. I thought that was the purpose of debate forums.

It's hardly embarrassing a delivery driver for someone to say they don't want an item for any reason. It happens a lot. It's not something that's taken personally (and if it is, then they're in the wrong job).

You're also making a lot of assumptions about 'Harry'. Where I live, for example, is a very diverse area, so 'Harry' might be from pretty much anywhere around the world, wouldn't necessarily be male, and might have his/her/their own views on international political and humanitarian issues. It's also a pretty friendly area, so it's not at all unusual to talk about events in the news, local and global politics, etc with people.

And if 'Harry' does end up thinking it's silly or offensive for someone to not want an item for whatever reason, who actually cares? 'Harry' can have his opinion and someone else gets to have what shopping items they want.

Won't someone please think of the children...?

Meanwhile, puppies in Gaza are now feral and surviving by eating the dead. And children are being killed, maimed and traumatised every day, by a military spurred on by genocidal rhetoric and far-right hatred, and supplied with the means to do it by our governments.

It's not about the driver taking a rejected project back, it's about somebody noting, on their Tesco account, not to substitute with Israeli produce. That is the cusyomer's perogative. The driver commenting on how wonderful the customer is on that choice, is a separate issue. I can joke that I'm a pisshead when I order multiple bottles of wine. However, Tesco staff are going outside of their training, when they make their political allegiances known. So I call bullshit.

Dulra · 19/06/2024 16:02

Bumble6 · 19/06/2024 14:27

Isn't boycotting everything from Israel a form of collective punishment though? Because you don't agree with what their government is doing you are trying to harm their economy and therefore the people? Campaigning to stop arms being sold to them I can understand

No. It is a legitimate form of peaceful protest and no where near as severe as state sanctions imposed on countries such as Russia

Dulra · 19/06/2024 16:03

@Bumble6 and definitely not in the same league as the collective punishment imposed on Palestinians
