Does IDF consider every man in Gaza to be Hamas?

ConnieCounter · 16/01/2024 20:06

I'm trying to understand how many Hamas members have been killed.

Israel's stated aim in bombarding Gaza is to destroy Hamas, presumably by killing all their members. Surely, at over 100 days in, they need to justify this offensive, which has caused extremely high levels of civilian deaths and child deaths, by showing how successful they are being in their stated objective.

Hamas gives death tolls of total deaths, making it impossible to know how many are Hamas.

But looking at figures reported from the Israeli side yesterday, they say 9000 Hamas have been killed. They also cite a total death toll (using Hamas's figure) of over 23000.

That's almost 40% of the deaths.

Is Israel just counting every Palestinian man as a Hamas fighter? I don't see any other explanation.

And if they are doing this and nobody has a clue how many Hamas fighters they've actually killed, how on earth can this bombardment be justified, if its aim is to destroy Hamas?

Their objective is to get rid of Hamas. Obviously, no-one in Hamas is walking around wearing a T-shirt with Hamas Member written on it so to cover all bases, they will smash the place up and kill as many military aged men as they possibly can.

Thats what happens in war. Thats what war is.

No it isn't. Jesus Christ what a statement.

Ask the Americans why they dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, why the Germans bombed non-industrial areas of Coventry etc and we Cologne. Why Hamas killed partying teenagers, elderly and young adults.

After how many years of war and how many million deaths up till that point, and long since considered to be war crimes anyway?

Yes these are all war crimes, so not great examples to illustrate your point.

It’s difficult to know which are Hamas when they don’t wear a uniform.

ChalkWitch · 17/01/2024 13:28

@ConnieCounter what do you think Israel should do?
Not what they shouldn’t do, but what should they do to eradicate Hamas to prevent their genocidal intent?
What would move this forward?

Just Compare it To Saleh Al arouri asssination, the building was expertly targeted , no other innocent casualties , what the IDF is doing is the complete opposite in Gaza.

Doesn’t really work as an example does it? That was one man. In Gaza Hamas are multiple.

"Israel uses sophisticated attack jets and naval vessels to bomb densely-crowded refugee camps, schools, apartment blocks, mosques, and slums to attack a population that has no air force, no air defence, no navy, no heavy weapons, no artillery units, no mechanized armour, no command in control, no army and calls it a war. It's not. It's murder." Chomsky.
According to you, anyone who is above 18 and males must be killed, just in case they are Hamas terrorists. I am speechless.

25milesfromhome · 17/01/2024 13:53

No war in history has ever killed over 30,000 in such a short space of time. Only depraved individuals could endorse this.

Not intending to derail, but this kind of inaccurate hyperbole presented as fact is really unhelpful. The death toll and suffering in Gaza is horrific enough, rewriting history and exaggeration is unnecessary and betrays an inherent bias in framing Israel and its people as the worst, most bloodthirsty, most murderous entity ever.

A few examples of mass executions (by shooting) in much shorter periods of time during WW2, the objective being the eradication of one specific group of people. All enthusiastically endorsed and participated in by local collaborators, police, soldiers and “special action groups” (often known as “mobile killing units”).

Babyn Yar- 33,771 murdered in 2 days, 29-30th September, 1941.

Kamenets-Podolsk - 23,600 murdered in 2 days, August 26-28th, 1941.

Operation Harvest Festival, Poland, approx 42,000 murdered in 2 days, November 3-4th, 1943.

As Hamas specialise in hiding in plain sight, it must be incredibly difficult to identify them, but I’m confused by this perspective:
Families have said their fathers, sons, brothers etc were rounded up and stripped down, treated like Hamas members and the video of this went viral, it turns out they were doctors, academics, journalists etc and held real jobs. Israel later admitted none of them were hamas and they made a mistake.
… I know there is one side here that cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

The IDF stated they’d made a mistake and confirmed these men were not Hamas but they’re liars who consider every Gazan man to be Hamas? Which is it?

Ask the Americans why they dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, why the Germans bombed non-industrial areas of Coventry etc and we Cologne. Why Hamas killed partying teenagers, elderly and young adults.

The Americans dropped the first bomb because they had calculated that, if they had invaded the Japanese mainland in a conventional way, they would have suffered 1 millions casualties. They knew the Japanese would never surrender; they assumed using the atomic bomb would make them do that.
When they still refused to surrender, they dropped the second one. Japan then surrendered.
Regarding the bombings of cities by both allies and Nazi Germany, I will leave it to Emily Charles, IWM Curator:
“The theory behind strategic bombing was developed after the First World War by Generals like Billy Mitchell in the United States, Hugh Trenchard in Britain and Giulio Duhey in Italy. Military thinkers who had witnessed the stalemate of the First World War conceived strategic bombing as an alternative to the war of attrition on the Western Front.”
“At the start of the war, aerial bombing was seen by national leaders as unethical. The world had been horrified by the bombing of Guernica in 1937, where civilians were intentionally targeted by aerial bombardment. In 1939, RAF Bomber Command had 23 operational bomber squadrons with 280 aircRAFt. This modest force gave Britain the means to strike back at Nazi Germany but only against strictly military targets at first.”
When war broke out in 1939 US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt appealed to the leaders of belligerent nations to avoid the inhuman barbarism of launching aerial attacks against civilians. All participants including Adolf Hitler quickly agreed and was swiftly followed by Britain and France. The first Allied air attacks launched in 1939 were against strictly military targets, airfields German shipping and mine laying in the channel.
“But this attitude did not last for long. The invasion of France and the appointment of Winston Churchill as Prime Minister in 1940 prompted the British War Cabinet to sanction a campaign of strategic bombing against German industry. The first RAF bombing operation was launched against Mönchengladbach on the 11th of May 1940.
37 bombers attacked transport and industrial targets killing four people. Also in 1940, the German Luftwaffe began a sustained campaign of aerial bombing against British towns and cities. 300 German bombers raided London on the first night of the Blitz. Both sides claimed they were bombing in retaliation. In 1942, Arthur Harris was appointed the new Commander-in-chief of Bomber Command. German cities now became a primary target for area bombing from the Allies and Harris gained much public support when he sent a thousand bombers against Cologne.”

I deplore the loss of life both in Israel on October 7th and in Gaza.
But let’s not be hypocritical.

2997 people died on 9/11.

And as a result this.

  • Key Findings432,093 civilians have died violent deaths as a direct result of the U.S. post-9/11 wars.
  • An estimated 3.6-3.8 million people have died indirectly in post-9/11 war zones, bringing the total death toll to at least 4.5-4.7 million and counting.
  • More than 7.6 million children under five in post-9/11 war zones are suffering from acute malnutrition
  • War deaths from malnutrition and a damaged health system and environment likely far outnumber deaths from combat.

Let's not forget that others, who the Nazi regime deemed "undesirable" such as Gipsies Roma, Jehovah witnesses, political opponents, gays, resistants, people of colour, people with learning and physical disabilities, Slavs, Russians and the list goes on, were also the victims of mass executions along side Jews.
They matter too.

I never forget them and thank you for the whataboutery used to deflect and not address my point in any way. Well done for All Lives Mattering the Holocaust.

I was addressing the claim that No war in history has ever killed over 30,000 in such a short space of time, and eradication being the objective- demonstrably false, as illustrated by the few examples I gave, of one group specifically and officially targeted for annihilation, killed in equally large numbers, but in the space of two days, during a war.
I can also talk all the live long day about the Roma, the other group specifically targeted for annihilation during the Holocaust if you’d like and happy to c&p a derailing wall of text if you feel you need it, but as this thread is about Hamas in Gaza, I was trying to keep it brief.

It should target its attacks. It's not that big a mystery. Most other armies manage to do it.

I think it's clear from the fact that they killed three escaped male Israeli hostages that they are targeting pretty much all males of military age.

Scirocco · 17/01/2024 15:34

Pretty much. It didn't matter whether my friends and colleagues were even Palestinian. When it came to the men, they were male so they were humiliated, injured and killed.

Coyoacan · 17/01/2024 15:52

PeasfullPerson · 16/01/2024 21:28

As far as I’m aware they haven’t shared any definition regarding membership of Hamas or given any information on how they verify their targets were members of Hamas.

IDF soldiers were filmed chanting about there being no innocent civilians and an ex leader of Shin Bet says most Israelis believe that all Palestines are/or support Hamas.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/14/shin-bet-ami-ayalon-calls-on-israel-release-intifada-leader-marwan-barghouti

IDF have also shown themselves to be trigger happy, resulting in the death of three Israeli hostages by themselves.

This. I believe babies are the most ardent supporters of hamas

Target attacks where exactly? Where exactly are the Hamas operatives? If it’s not that big a mystery I’m sure you’ll be able to inform me.

Well that's for Israel to know. They're the ones claiming that they're destroying Hamas. Surely they have military intelligence.

Also, you misunderstood my previous post. I was commenting on how armies other than Israel target their attacks. I wasn't claiming to know where Hamas are, because obviously that's an insane thing to say but apparently you need to be told that.

Any comment on them killing every male in sight? Or do you think that's reasonable?

Pretty sure the babies in the incubators weren’t terrorists, or the many many children with limbs blown off. But perhaps you think they should have been wearing T shirts that declared whether they were or weren’t?
