Conflict in the Middle East

To ask why the only countries that didn't vote for a ceasefire were USA and UK?

stillholly · 09/12/2023 23:12

All other countries in the UN voted for a ceasefire.

USA put their hand up and voted against a ceasefire.

UK abstained from voting.

Can anyone explain to me their reasoning for not voting for a ceasefire?

I think we are purposely not told how serious the terror threat is at times and that's why people have issues drawing the dots. It seems so ridiculous.

Who would you rely on to return the favour if needed?

Would you like to align more closely with the M.E

If we were on friendlier terms with the ME and most other countries we wouldn’t need allies, now would we?

Thereissomelight · 10/12/2023 12:39

Killing thousands of their children REALLY isn’t going to make anyone safer.

So is that your answer, you’d prefer to rely on the ME to the US?

Do you have dc and live in the U.K.? Some of this is just SM gloss isn’t it, real threat would be different

Where did I say that?

I’m prefer not to have to rely on anyone. By not making lots of enemies by killing thousands of children.

What a stupid fucking question. “You have to choose. You’re either with us or against us”. No in between. Extremist black and white thinking. Ffs, no wonder we’re in this mess.

UK alone isn’t very strong. And as much as it would be nice to have zero world conflicts they do happen, we are fortunate to have been protected for a while

Imo presidential elections changing NATO funding may well be something people do feel the impact of, I wouldn’t wish for it

As for in this mess, and your inability to respond well, no it’s not down to my posts or actions, but I do think people are lacking ability to think forward and not just do an SM level of discussion

Gummybear23 · 10/12/2023 12:56

It is a genocide.
Painfully sad and callous.

stomachameleon · 10/12/2023 13:07

@EasternStandard I agree.
Our lives in this country would be very different it it wasn't for others 'help'.
No man is an island and all that.

LickleLamb · 10/12/2023 13:23

Wars are fought between opposing armies. This is not a war as Israel is fighting and killing the population.

Thereissomelight · 10/12/2023 13:25

SM level of discussion

My my. I’m not sure what part of “Stop murdering innocent children” isn’t intellectual enough for your own self-perceived level of intellect.

I get my news mainly from MSM . Also from background reading. And despite not coming from an ME background I have lived, been to school, and worked in the ME. So I do know a bit about it, the good and the bad (there’s plenty of both, just like anywhere else).

And finally, since MSM tends to be very biased and to gloss over a lot of what’s happening, depending on what country you’re in, I do top up with SM. Especially since MSM journalists are not allowed in to Gaza and those who are there have been killed in their droves, SM is often the only route the Gazans can use to show us what’s going on there.

If the US is not who you want to rely on there’s reasonable concern they will withdraw funding from Ukraine and/ or NATO

Do you think we will be better off without their funding in the U.K. and across Europe?

stomachameleon · 10/12/2023 13:31

@LickleLamb I must have imagined those rockets flying into Israel from Gaza then?
Who is firing them? Unless your insinuating it's normal civilians?
And who committed the atrocities on 7/10?
And who are Israel fighting house to house combat with at the moment?

ToWhitToWhoo · 10/12/2023 13:35

Basically because we are in essence America's 51st state and Israel is America's 52nd state.

There are all kinds of tragic complexities in the situation, but this is the answer to your specific question.

Killing thousands of their children REALLY isn’t going to make anyone safer.

This is the bit some people seem to really struggle with, Israel is planting the seeds of terrorism for decades to come.

Using conventional weapons, even the IDF wont kill 2m people (plus those on the West Bank) so the survivors will carry the hate for Israel forward, just as previous Israeli wars have done.

Its quite shocking that so many don't see this, destabilisation? Yes we will have that by the bucketful, a never ending series of terrorist attacks and retaliations, both in the ME, in Europe & beyond.

ToWhitToWhoo · 10/12/2023 13:50

'It’s like if Britain has started a war in Northern Ireland and killed all of republican people even if they weren’t members of the IRA. It’s genocide.'

This really could describe quite a lot of Britain's history with Ireland. Irish Catholics suffered vicious discrimination and suppression in the 17th and 18th centuries. Catholic Emancipation in the early 19th century improved things for upper class Catholics, but things continued to be pretty awful for most Irish people for a long time after that.

Many ccnsider the British handling of the famine to be tantamount to genocide.

And no, I don't support the IRA.

I don’t think people aren’t aware of this. The Manchester arena bomber was supposed to have targeted children due to children who died during the Syrian civil war.

Look at what happened after Saddam H was overthrown.

My thoughts exactly

headstone · 10/12/2023 14:50

Having gone away and thought about some of the pro Israel arguments, that Hamas is embedded in the civilian population therefore they have to kill civilians en masse. Surely this argument only holds true if you believe Israeli lives are worth more than Palestinian lives? I understand that Israel values their own civilians above Palestinians and therefore the idea of killing thousands is justified in order to protect against a possible future terrorist attack but why are other people supporting this? If we do believe all lives matter and if we don’t we must be racist surely?

I don’t think there was ever the sheer gulf of hatred there is currently between Israel and Palestine. Despite violence and murders by both sides it just never became that grotesquely extreme. The general population on both sides never allowed it or wanted it.

And Palestine gunning down people at a music festival, invading sleeping homes and murdering children at their breakfast tables during a ceasefire is what? A day out for the hamas rebels? Your bias is showing.

headstone · 10/12/2023 18:53

Weefreetiffany, Hamas Militants did that, yet the majority of people killed by the IDF are women and children.

I doubt the general population of Gaza certainly don't want this and I'd bet a lot of Israelis don't either.
And i don’t agree about the sheer gulf of hatred either, there was a lot of hatred and resentment in NI during the troubles.
