Why Can't Gazans Leave?

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

It worked tonight, thankfully! I've reassessed my previous criticism of the UN in light of the way it has been frustrated by the USA vetoes during this period.

Hopefully the fact that the whole world has watched these deliberate actions will lead to reform. I support that.

There needs to be reform. There should be no special veto power for the allies from WWII (U.K., US, France, Russia and China).

stormy4319trevor · 12/12/2023 22:29

@BelleHathor Yes, the veto option isn't really democratic.

BelleHathor · 12/12/2023 22:46

I agree with you both. It's all geopolitical shenanigans. USA won't vote for any resolutions brought by China or Russia as they're "adversaries" and vice versa. We've wasted weeks on this whilst deaths spiralled.

Even tonight the "condemn Hamas" amendment was only introduced to give "No" Voters an excuse for why they voted that way and frustrate the process.

Major reform is required.

Torrential rain and surface flooding in S Gaza making it difficult for people sleeping on the street/in makeshift shelters and flimsy tents to keep themselves and the few possessions they still have dry

Surface flooding and no toilets [so open defaecation] presents increase risk of disease and walking thro' dilute faeces everywhere

Seems like there's no limit to the suffering of these people

Toothyfruity · 13/12/2023 08:17

Jesus Christ. That's horrendous. I can't believe the savagery of the Israeli state.

And even the weather's against them atm

Realise it's normal winter weather but still..................

This is how it looks for most of those displaced in Gaza right now as described above.

Efacsen · 13/12/2023 10:21

@YetAnotherSpartacus not sure if that particular article has been posted before - we're on page 30 and there have certainly been similar

stormy4319trevor · 13/12/2023 12:23

The world needs to get its skates on. I can't imagine how the vulnerable - children, elderly, disabled - will survive another month of this.

Toothyfruity · 13/12/2023 12:25

I've seen more footage of floods. Shocking. It's actually sickening to watch. People supporting this need their heads examined.

Efacsen · 13/12/2023 12:40

And this sort of weather is in for the next 3 months or so - not every day but regularly

Efacsen · 14/12/2023 09:46

More than half Gaza's population of 2,3 million are now in Rafah [safe area] so an extra million people are in this 'city' of 208000 - it's horribly overcrowded cold and wet but is the area where some humanitarian aid is being distributed* - huge crowds seen

But Rafah was intensively bombed last night and this morning - really very worrying wrt to these people being pushed out of gaza into n sinai

*this means half the population not in Rafah are getting no aid

Parkingt111 · 14/12/2023 11:51

@Efacsen I was shocked when I saw the aftermath of the bombing in Rafah. Most of the civilians there as you mentioned are already displaced

I am also very concerned with the bombs that are being used after the recent report that has come to light.

I am waiting to see if Egypt responds to the bombing that is taking place close to the Egyptian border

Efacsen · 14/12/2023 12:31

@Parkingt111 agree the pictures were shocking

Hopefully IDF are making sure that their 'indiscriminate bombing' doesn't damage the border wall and cause a accidental breach

stormy4319trevor · 14/12/2023 17:03

When I look at photos, nobody has proper shoes. Only sandals. The children's feet must be freezing.

Whatamidoinhere · 15/12/2023 00:13

I saw this today and I don't know how much worse it should get to cease fire and get them help.

MercanDede · 15/12/2023 00:20

That’s a gut punch. Why can’t they just stop?! It’s heartbreaking. It’s no place for children. This man made hell on Earth.

I don’t think Egypt will respond from the looks of them & what they have been saying. What are the bombs?

Efacsen · 15/12/2023 10:01

Continuing intense bombing in Khan Younis and Rafah - all 5 remaining hospitals are overwhelmed

It's stopped raining for now tho' everywhere on the ground where people are sleeping, cooking, caring for their children is still wet and soggy

Parkingt111 · 15/12/2023 10:40

Often for women there are additional difficulties living in the camps and tents. Sanitary products are hard to come by and hundreds sharing a toilet. I read some women were using any dirty scraps of cloths they could find in desperation when on their periods and they described the humiliation they felt of not being able to change or clean themselves
I really wish there was more we could do to help.

Parker231 · 15/12/2023 13:58

Saw this on Twitter

Almost half of Gazans are now forced into Rafah

Yet, in Rafah overnight, Israeli airstrikes and bombs injured and killed hundreds of Palestine civilians, more than half of them children.

No where in Gaza is safe. This is Israel’s no-state solution.

The BBC have also reported on it including stories of people in the UK who have family trapped in Gaza. Some of them have been asked to move more than once and due to disabilities and other reasons are unable to do so
