Why Can't Gazans Leave?

miniaturepixieonacid · 04/12/2023 13:25

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

Palestinian children should be looking to their elders who voted in a terrorist government,

<sigh>

Hamas weren’t “voted in”. The won an election sometime in the mid- noughties but then effectively took over and there hasn’t been an election in Gaza since.

Maybe the traumatised Israeli children should look to their own PM since he was quite happy for Hamas to remain in power.

@NeonSoda I Don't that situation is unique to Gaza by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe how they chose to deal with if?

Look at darfur? Yemen? There are lots of countries. We have had two WW's here. My Nan lost a whole street of family in 'hellfire corner'. Pretty sure she didn't explode with murderous intent. (She wasn't keen on krauts mind you and wailing Winnie made her cry until she died at 97)

What is so different? Education? And I mean both sides are letting their children down. Wanting something better? Valuing your own life? The Chain has to be broken.

The difference is that the people of Gaza (and other parts of OPT) are effectively locked in, under siege, under a horrendous military occupation. There was a documentary on recently about fighters in Jenin. A young adult male, maybe around 20. Lives in Jenin camp, said he has never been able to see the sea due to the occupation. Can't visit family a few miles away due to the checkpoints. Knowing your house could be invaded every single night. Witnessing homes being razed to the ground, IDF coming in and shooting people, settlers attacking children. This has sweet FA to do with education. It's life under occupation.

Reports of at least 20 people killed and more still in the rubble in bombing raids in Rafah [safe area] overnight

Won't do anything to improve aid distribution onwards from the Rafah crossing today - expect we'll hear from IDF_COGAT crowing about the uselessness of UNWRA though - the poor starving thirsty palestinians are just pawns

Yet more proof (as if we needed it) that there are no safe areas for the civilians in Gaza. And yet still many people will defend the IDF and say “they warned civilians to move”.

Parkingt111 · 12/12/2023 09:20

There was a delegation from the UN who visited Rafah border just yesterday to see the awful situation just yesterday and to think there was an air strike there today
That's what really irks me when posters say that there are safe places in Gaza that Israel has so graciously granted to the Gazans as if they should be very grateful for it when there really isn't
They are being killed everywhere

Parkingt111 · 12/12/2023 09:41

The US said this again today. Every day they are repeating just about the same thing but wording it differently and it doesn't seem to be having much effect

We believe it is critical that Israel places a premium on the protection of human life, and for the ability of aid organisations to access civilians,"

they also said that Israel can do more to protect lives.

Lip service.

They make me sick.

There is a discussion here about Palestinians leaving. It's thoroughly depressing and I think fraught with danger. As I said before Israel's actions are a potential threat to us all. Apparently BN has now said the Israeli Govt is not ruling out war in the West Bank. Keep him in power longer I guess screw everyone else

And at the same time saying they are fully behind Israel. I think its just bollocks to make them look better.

Efacsen · 12/12/2023 18:02

A bit of a shift? @Silence1 @Parkingt111 the other stuff he said was about being right behind Israel

Biden has also said that Israel is starting to “lose support” from the international community due to its indiscriminate bombing that has killed thousands of Palestinian civilians.

“They’re starting to lose that support,” Biden said during a Tuesday campaign event.

Biden added that Netanyahu needs to change his hardline government.

Parkingt111 · 12/12/2023 18:29

@Efacsen agreed
What he must mean but can't say out loud is not only the government members but Netanyahu needs to go too

Silence1 · 12/12/2023 18:48

@Efacsen Looks like it. BBC also said something had just come from Reuters on a disagreement between US and Israel on what happens next.
They also said NZ, Canada and Australia have just issued a joint statement urging a sustainable ceasefire

stormy4319trevor · 12/12/2023 19:50

@BelleHathor Good news on Canada, NZ and Australia. Sad the UK has isolated us from everyone except the US, but we have some things in common with these countries and maybe it will influence the UK.

Parkingt111 · 12/12/2023 19:54

Biden keeps going on about a two state solution and Netanyahu has no intention for one
Hence the differing. And I'm not sure why he repeats himself every second day or do, does he think by doing this he will convince Netanyahu because it doesn't seem very likely

He said the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was opposed to a two-state solution with the Palestinians, something that Biden’s top officials have been promoting as the post-war path

Parkingt111 · 12/12/2023 19:56

@Silence1 forgot to tag you in the above post regarding one aspect they are differing over

BelleHathor · 12/12/2023 20:30

@stormy4319trevor Definitely good news, remember that all 3 are members of Five Eyes (the other 2 being the USA and UK). I imagine that such a public pivot would not have been without discussions between all 5. Bidens comments and the others pivot were all reported within an hour of each other, again suggesting coordination.

stormy4319trevor · 12/12/2023 20:36

@BelleHathor Oh interesting - I knew about CANZUK but not 5 eyes. Just watching UN debate on ceasefire, though they do go on a long time, not sure I'll watch whole thing. The President gave a very moving speech. US just about to suggest an amendment.

BelleHathor · 12/12/2023 20:45

Watching it live too @stormy4319trevor , the President really conveys feelings and emotions so well. Remember that over 100 UN staff members have been killed in Gaza. These would have been people all UN workers knew, imagine knowing that'll you'll never see x walking down the corridor again. He gave a heartfelt tribute to them and their families at the last General Council.

Silence1 · 12/12/2023 20:51

Thanks @Parkingt111 caught up with it now

stormy4319trevor · 12/12/2023 20:57

US rejecting a ceasefire again.

It worked tonight, thankfully! I've reassessed my previous criticism of the UN in light of the way it has been frustrated by the USA vetoes during this period.

Hopefully the fact that the whole world has watched these deliberate actions will lead to reform. I support that.
