Why Can't Gazans Leave?

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

I clearly said at the beginning when they were focused on the north. Israel made thousands of phone calls and dropped millions of leaflets telling them to evacuate south.

That’s true but they’re bombing the south as well. The point is that, irrespective of where in Gaza Hamas wants them to be, they cannot leave Gaza itself.

Anotherdayanotherdiet · 08/12/2023 22:33

What and they've had 22 years to repair it but haven't?

I doubt Israel would allow it. They put a blockade on them remember? It would be too much of a security risk.

Is there anything you'll blame Israel for?

Threatening people with being bombed to death if they don't leave is ethnic cleansing. Nice guys the IDF.

There is an interesting article by the BBC about today's vote

I think the strategy behind the secretary general's decision to bring a vote - which he knew would probably get vetoed - was to hurry up the inevitable moment when the Americans will say to Israel: "Enough is enough, you've had enough time and killed enough people and it's time for a ceasefire."

What an insane comment, you obviously have no idea of the conditions they endure and what it takes to build an airport, there would be no specialised companies allowed into Gaza.

I just saw Hamas executed another hostage today, an engineering student ☹️ RIP I will light tomorrow’s candle for him

Oh where did you see that ? Verified source please.

They've been bombed quite a few times.

Power stations and water desalination are prioritised.

No point building something that will just be bombed again. No point having an airport when someone else controls your airspace.

It just demonstrates such a lack of awareness as to the extent that Gaza is under siege. Nothing goes into Gaza unchecked, and so many goods are destroyed. There's a name for it that I can't recall just now, something along the lines of 'duplicate/surplus goods'. Basically anything of use to Palestinians is denied entry. Basic building materials, school supplies, fishing nets, agricultural equipment. The thought of Israel allowing them to build an airport is laughable.

Tell me you don’t know anything about Gaza without telling me you don’t know anything about Gaza.

  1. Tell me how does a country build an airport when they’ve had 4 wars in between. Wouldn’t they have been targeted by now?

On 8 October 2000, immediately after the outbreak of the second intifada, Israel closed down the airport, and it has not opened since. In December 2001, the Israeli Air Force bombed the airport's runways. From the beginning of the second intifada to the completion of the disengagement plan in 2005, the airport served as an Israeli military base. When the soldiers left and after the disengagement plan was implemented, it was found that soldiers at the base had vandalized and destroyed the buildings. In the Agreement on Movement and Access (AMA), which Israel and the Palestinian Authority signed in November 2005, Israel recognized the importance of the airport in Gaza, and made a commitment to discuss arrangements to reopen it with the Palestinians. No discussions on this matter have ever been held.

so, it’s all their fault isn’t it?

It’s amazing how it’s only infrastructure that Hamas can’t possibly build or fuel. Rockets, weapons of war, no problem.

stormy4319trevor · 08/12/2023 23:24

I'm sure an airport would be the first thing to get bombed while mowing the lawn. It's not the kind of thing that can be hidden.

Can you explain how you could build and run an airport in a tunnel?

cauliflowerwaterfall · 08/12/2023 23:34

Why don’t they build an airport instead of a terror tunnel 💡

Why don’t they build an airport instead of a terror tunnel 💡

Let me think of several ideas

  1. Many of those terror tunnels wer built by Israel.
  2. an airport it’s easier to be destroyed
  3. They’d have no control over the airport
  4. A tunnel can provide shelter in the event of a war (4 in the last 10 years)

which one do you like most

Just seen on bbc that hamas is reporting Israel killed the person. So … as always we will never know the truth about what happened

curious why would you lit a candle only for those killed by hamas and not for anyone that has died as part of this conflict @cauliflowerwaterfall 🤔

I give up… 🙇🏽‍♀️

I could tell you the sun rises in the East and sets in the West and you’d say “Where’s the proof?? Of course you’d say that. Pics or it didn’t happen. It’s a war crime to make the sun disappear”

A random member of a proscribed terrorist organisation tweets that they built 300 miles of terror tunnels underneath civilians to import paperclips and you’re like “yep, sounds legit, no further questions.”

Don’t think we are refusing the idea of Hamas having built several tunnels as using them. But the idea of spending money building an airport that will be destroyed not long after being built and that Gaza will not have any control over doesn’t make any sense at all. Of course they’re going to invest the cash on things that will benefit them long term.

Israel won't allow building materials into Gaza and you expect them to magic up an airport. Get real.

Why do you think they went underground though? Which sounds more likely A. They just really like tunnels or B. Because there is an illegal blockade and Israel controls everything coming in and out of Gaza. Even when Gaza had an airport Israel controlled who used it. Are you seeing a pattern with Israel and their control issues yet?

You do your cause no favours by constantly denying the reality of life in Gaza under an illegal blockade. Constantly denying that Israel do any wrong. It is all documented, it's there for everyone to read about.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 09/12/2023 00:08

To be fair @OuiOuiKitty some people do really like tunnels. Maybe there is some Cornish miner DNA in Gaza.

Other option involves a long apartheid history, but surely that is not possible?

Efacsen · 09/12/2023 07:44

No ceasefire

Gazans still can't leave - still being bombed, shelled, starved, deprived of water & medical care, moved around like livestock, crammed into a tiny part of their own country

But not bad enough yet for US

What more has to happen?

Parkingt111 · 09/12/2023 08:33

Mohammed Ghanem fled from an area near al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza where he said more than 25 strikes occurred next to his house.
He said he came to al-Mawasi because "the Israeli army has been directing people here" but said the area was "neither humane nor safe".
He described seeing Israeli tanks less than a kilometre away and said there had been strikes on an area just 500 metres (1,640ft) from the humanitarian zone.

Efacsen · 09/12/2023 08:43

Understand that there's not a single toilet at Al Mawasi for thousands of people

No/not enough proper UN tents just make-shift shelters made of plastic sheeting and whole families sleeping outdoors/on the street

It keeps raining overnight - even though temp is 10-12 deg at night hypothermia occurs sooner because of loss of body fat and insufficient calories

The suffering of these people is not due to a natural disaster it's entirely man-made and even purposeful
