Why Can't Gazans Leave?

miniaturepixieonacid · 04/12/2023 13:25

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

Any reason why it has to be the Arabs? Why not the uk? Such a big net was created to host Ukrainians … is there any difference between an Ukrainian child and a Palestinian one?

Numbers I think. Ukraine citizens had to have a passport and were spread around much of Europe, many in neighbouring Poland. Also many want to return home.
No one country is going to be willing to take in millions of Palestinian children.

Theres been two wars and millions of refugees in just two years , what if more wars happen ? No country can sustain millions of refugees, no matter how heart breaking this is.

I can’t see Isreal stopping until Hamas are gone and who knows how long that will take..

Agreed. This war will continue until Israel achieves it's military objective which is to destroy Hamas. I predicted 6 weeks ago that this would either happen by year end or Spring at the latest. We will see. In any case, the sooner Hamas are destroyed the better, and thats about as good as it's going to get so we better all hope for a swift victory for Israel.

Paul2023 · 05/12/2023 22:55

There’s no way a coalition of countries will join up with Isreal to help destroy Hamas ?

How will they know when Hamas is destroyed? Do you think it is possible to kill an ideology by killing people?

“will join”? Israel is already getting tonnes of help.

Well they tried for 20 years to kill the Taliban before giving up..
It took five years for the world to destroy the Nazis..
I’ve no idea about Hamas though…

Israel doesn't need anybody. It's perfectly capable of fighting it's own battles.

I'm not sure people fully understand just how powerful Israel actually is.

NeonSoda · 05/12/2023 23:07

Outofmydepthnow · 05/12/2023 21:49

So I ask AGAIN ! Why can't Arab countries organise a humanitarian lift of women and children out of Gaza via the Rafa crossing ? Along the lines of the kinder transport against the Nazi take over of Germany in the face of overwhelming odds ?

If we empty Gaza of Palestinians, the Israelis will move straight in and take the land as their own.

They are not trying to destroy Hamas, they are trying to occupy Gaza and take it for their own.

It needs the money that USA keeps providing every year tho.

The IDF has around 170k full time troops. 300k reservists have joined the fight since October 7th. There are another 200k reservists that could be called back to fight.

the Gaza Strip has a population of two million.

Israel have more than 30% of the total number of Gaza Strup citizens in its defence force.

they do not need military help.

RedToothBrush · 05/12/2023 23:15

paladium · 05/12/2023 22:40

@RedToothBrush why does Israel have a say in who crosses the Egypt / Palestine border?

I believe the current arrangements are a legacy of various things: the settlement after the Egyptian Israeli war and subsequent attempts at peace between Palestine/Israel.

The key point is that as such the Palestinians have a limited right to self governance but Palestine isn't recognised as a state. And since it's not a State in its own right it technically doesn't have an international border. Because it can't have one.

At the same time Israel retains certain obligations and powers. It can't do certain things within the West Bank and Gaza because of the notion of this limited right to self governance but it has some power. And the border with Egyptian is bound up with the settlement after the war.

Thus Egypt has to comply with certain terms regarding the Sinai peninsula being demilitarised, Israel has a stake because of the history but Palestine also has some limited self governance too.

This also raises problems if a big refugee camp were to spring up on the Egyptian side of the border, in practice Egypt can't police it without agreement from Israel even though it's their land because of the demilitarised zone. Israel has the right to raise objection.

I apologise if I haven't quite got this right - I think my lack of understanding highlight says a lot. And it's best as a 'messy' situation which doesn't help anyone understand the entire issue of the instability in the area.

Israel and Gaza agreeing anything isn't straightforward. They managed, just about , to free some of hostages with negotiations but not all.

Whatamidoinhere · 05/12/2023 23:33

@tescocreditcard powerful? I think Israel is creating its own grave. Getting rid of Hamas by killing babies really and innocent civilians? Israel may have bombed the shit out of Gaza, but one thing is different this time, their atrocities are exposed to the whole world and people aren't having propaganda for breakfast like they used to. I'm sick to my stomach seeing poor babies decapitated because Israel has a reason to justify it.
They can get rid of Hamas now, but the way they did it and the suffering they caused will create many Hamas organisations in the future.

stomachameleon · 06/12/2023 00:02

@Whatamidoinhere what are you watching to see babies decapitated?

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:04

Not fox news obviously

stomachameleon · 06/12/2023 00:07

@Whatamidoinhere but you said you had seen it. Am keen to learn. Where?

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:12

Gaza journalists social media. They're living the genocide and documenting it. If you're interested I can mention a few names.

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:13

And that is exactly the reason why Israel is targeting journalists wearing a press vest! So many of them were killed and are actively getting threats that their families will be wiped out.

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:18

@stomachameleon I'll leave this here and I'm not going to argue anymore. No baby deserves this ever. No parent deserves to have their babies life stolen from them.

stomachameleon · 06/12/2023 00:02

@Whatamidoinhere what are you watching to see babies decapitated?

This is what happens when you blow people up. Unfortunately I think most people who have been following Palestinian journalists have seen babies burned to death, seen them with their extremities blown off some of them still alive but missing multiple limbs, some of the saddest are the unborn babies that don't make it out of their dead mothers alive. Unfortunately children seem to be at the front line of adult aggression. It's incredibly sad to think that more than 1 in every 200 children in Gaza never got the chance to the grow up.

WobbliHead3000 · 06/12/2023 00:41

The short answer is because Israel won’t allow Palestinians the right to return. So if they leave, they can never be entitled to their lands.
it’s an obvious land grab. The IDF are targeting infrastructure, farmland, etc to ensure no Palestinians will be able to rebuild with the limited resources they have. Netenyahu has already moved in on Gaza City and it won’t be long until the settlements return.

it’s so transparent, it’s sick.

@Whatamidoinhere but you said you had seen it. Am keen to learn. Where?

What kind of injuries do you think children suffer when bombs are dropped on their apartment blocks while they sleep?

Parkingt111 · 06/12/2023 07:41

@stomachameleon this is the aftermath of an airstrike in a residential area yesterday.
There's no beheaded babies but still very graphic
If you do want to honestly see what the results of an airstrike looks like in a civilian area this is it.

And ofcourse it goes without saying that there is a trigger warning. I'm not saying you should see it but I only put up because you wanted to know more. It also gives some insight into why so many people globally are horrified by what they are seeing on a daily basis

@WobbliHead3000 yes
Netanyahu has again said today that after the war the IDF will have security control over Gaza and they will not accept a third party

Even sky news have said that this alludes towards a form of occupation

Efacsen · 06/12/2023 09:05

Online this morning are photos of newly internally displaced people who have evacuated from Khan Younis in their thousands yesterday - some of the tents are almost right up against the border wall with Egypt [unless there's another big wall in Rafah]

Must say it's not as tall as I expected and my understanding was that there was a 100m exclusion zone in front of the border wall which seems to have disappeared

So nowhere now for people to evacuate further south unless it's over the border into Egypt
