Based on what you said, she was bang on.

Making sweeping generalisations and negative assumptions about a group of people based on their ethnic background and religion. What would you call it?

Reallifelurker · 26/11/2023 11:00

Yes, I forgot I hate the Irish as well 🙄

I dunno why you’re eye rolling when you haven’t actually refuted anything she said.

Cashncarry68 · 26/11/2023 10:50

No, she was not correct when she made accusations of Islamaphobia.

My above post was meat to quote this.

Parkingt111 · 26/11/2023 11:03

I think the reason people are discussing both here is because both are being released at the same time and generally the updates given on the news also update both together.
Just a suggestion maybe a different thread could be made to discuss the Palestinian detainees so as not to derail this one? Also BBC and other news outlets have been putting out stories of the detainees too and some of the background behind their arrests so maybe more appropriate to discuss on a new thread
Just a suggestion

Ah, I see you've clarified this was aimed at me. May I suggest you re-read your post and see if you can spot the irony.

I think it’s a good suggestion to keep this thread to the hostages taken by Hamas.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/11/2023 11:06

... it's done via martial law and closed military courts (if not administrative detention) and these are all sealed/cannot be made public unlike criminals prosecuted under a civic justice system. So all we really have are what human rights organisations have investigated and reported

Quite right, @MercanDede, but then I very much doubt the military courts prioritise sharing info with the various human rights people, so we're right back with speculation

True, although the human rights organisations, many of whom are Israeli lawyers do carry out their own investigations by interviewing eye witnesses, collecting evidence and so on. They don’t rely on what the military may or may not tell them or what the accused may or may not tell them.

But I will stop here. I think parking had a good suggestion to take this to another thread.

Stomacharmeleon · 26/11/2023 11:11

Refuting what she said? I know I am not Islamaphobic and anti NI. Does that make it clear?

"Throwing stones" makes the offence sound much less serious than it often is. Wikipedia reports st least 14 deaths in Israel from stone throwing Often the throwing is done using slingshots, as depicted by Banksy, that can be very accurate and cause serious injuries. I don't think the offence should be trivialised or dismissed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_stone-throwing

I was going to say, I'm sure I remember a little girl dying as a result of a rock being thrown at her car. Turns out it's not just her this has happened to.

Humdingerydoo · 26/11/2023 11:22

Sorry, I was still on page 5 so hadn't seen people asking not to discuss this anymore. I'll stop.

Hope more hostages are released today, without any further delays.

My DC school gave out Shabbat candles to light in honour of the hostages this week, and each pack came with info about one of the hostages. I can't get over what I felt when I looked at the photo of the 21 year old man held hostage, as he's clearly not going to be allowed home to his loved ones anytime soon, if ever. It was a devastating realisation. We only ever really talk about the children, but there are so many more people being held. It's awful

Iwantcakeeveryday · 26/11/2023 11:28

It is and I worry a lot of the men aren't going to be released. I mean I just cry thinking about the children, I looked at photos of my kids when they were young yesterday and just can't stop thinking how scared they must be. I hope and feel the children will all get out.... but the men may not be so lucky.

Parkingt111 · 26/11/2023 11:37

Hopefully everything goes well today and there are no further delays like yesterday.
I know there was some confusion yesterday on the agreements of the truce
Sky news have put this up today:

  • 50 Israeli women and children held by Hamas in Gaza to be released over four days during which there will be a pause in the fighting;
  • For every additional 10 hostages released thereafter there will be another day's pause in the fighting;
  • 150 Palestinian women and people under the age of 19 held in Israeli prisons to be freed;
  • Humanitarian relief, medical and fuel aid to be allowed into all areas of Gaza;
  • Aerial surveillance by Israel to halt for four days in the south of Gaza;
  • Aerial surveillance by Israel to halt for six hours a day from 10am to 4pm for four days in the north of Gaza;
  • During the truce period, Israel is committed not to attack or arrest anyone in all areas of Gaza.

I'm personally hoping that if the truce is fulfilled by both sides for the full four days then it can lead to all the remaining hostages released and a full ceasefire

stormy4319trevor · 26/11/2023 11:40

Hope so @Parkingt111 The release of more children would be good. They are probably more vulnerable to infection, and epidemics/illness are a concern.

I agree. It’s a slim hope but at least there is talking

Humdingerydoo · 25/11/2023 23:35

No, they're not blocking trucks. That's pure speculation on your part - as far as I'm aware not even Hamas have suggested that's happening.

The UN confirmed in the early hours of today that 61 trucks and 18 ambulances were allowed into the North.
Previously they had not been allowed access which was part of the reason for the hold up in the hostage release.
They also confirmed 137 trucks only were allowed in the day before, along with fuel.
A further 184 trucks were allowed in yesterday after further negotiations on their ‘delay’.

Efacsen · 26/11/2023 11:54

Sorry to introduce an element of negativity but this sounds concerning - I wonder why the Red Cross are saying this

23m ago
11.28 GMT

A senior Red Cross official has told Sky News he is “not confident” of more hostages being release today.

The network quotes Pascal Hundt saying that despite not being confident about more releases, the Red Cross has a team on standby. He was speaking from Gaza. He added that that the truce needed to remain in place because the humanitarian situation in Gaza was “so desperate”.

Readingallnight · 26/11/2023 11:59

Cashncarry68 · 26/11/2023 09:16

Oh no they are not! They are oppressed individuals with humanitarian rights. They would never dream of inflicting harm on others. They are not being radicalised in the slightest.

Some news channels are now using the term ‘detainees’ which is a better word and less antagonistic. It also allows for the fact that many have been detained without trial or access to lawyers.
It also allows for the current ‘arrest’ of many in more recent days. Just for being in Gaza or the West Bank.

Parkingt111 · 26/11/2023 12:03

@Efacsen oh no
That's not good at all
I'm away for the day but thank you for updating
I'm hoping it gets resolved
Sky news put up the conditions of the truce which I posted on here
Do you know if anywhere else the conditions are reported differently? It doesn't mention in there that not being allowed to move to the North was part of the truce

Readingallnight · 26/11/2023 12:04

Ixxy1980 · 25/11/2023 23:32

From what I’ve seen, the IDF haven’t been letting people go North so maybe they’ve been blocking the trucks as well. They’ve been shooting people who’ve been trying to get back to their homes.

Yes this is the case @Ixxy1980 as. As now confirmed. But 61 trucks have now been allowed through.
Good news for the people there as it also included much needed medical aid

Readingallnight · 26/11/2023 12:08

stormy4319trevor · 25/11/2023 23:58

According to Palestinian Red Crescent said it received 187 trucks today, according to CNN, so still not hitting 200. I think there needs to be an effort to increase it.

Yes agree
Its time to stick to the deal or it threatens the release of innocent civilians.
No point in sticking their heads in the sand and hoping no one notices. Hamas has clearly showed they have no intention of accepting anything other than what was in the deal.
Even with people being killed going north.
